(Ms. Lozano’s challenge to Susan Salcido for the position of Santa Barbara Superintendent of Schools SBUSD has been stymied by Joe Holland, the Registrar of Voters, and others who have – at this point – successfully removed Christy’s name from the June Primary ballot.)

In my last article (“They’re Trying to Kick me Off the Ballot Again,” SBCurrent, 25 March 2026), I told the story of how the “people in charge” aka, this time, the Registrar of Voters, Joe Holland, were attempting to take the choice of SBUSD Superintendent from voters.

I said I would do my due diligence to ensure that did not happen, and unfortunately to my dismay, it has.

I was able to secure the counsel of one of the best attorney organizations I have ever come into contact with: Advocates for Faith and Freedom. This organization won the right to refuse the Covid vaccine for the teachers of Santa Barbara, saved our jobs, and protected the children of Santa Barbara in 2021 when Santa Barbara Unified issued a vaccine mandate.

The case to get my name back on the ballot was heard on April 8 in Santa Barbara Superior Court by Judge Colleen Sterne, who also presided over the lawsuit filed against me in 2022.

The first step was for Advocates for Faith and Freedom to send a letter to Joe Holland at the elections office. The letter demanded the immediate reinstatement of my name onto the ballot for the June 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election.

They argued that the decision made by Mr. Holland’s office on March 9, 2026, to disqualify me from candidacy for the position of Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools is legally incorrect, stating that I met all necessary qualifications under California Education Code § 1208, holding a valid Administrative Services Credential.

The letter emphasizes that my credential allows me to seek employment in an administrative position and that recent legislative changes (Assembly Bill 872) do not limit my eligibility; it only clarifies that I am eligible. It also references a prior court ruling that upheld my candidacy, asserting that election statutes should be interpreted in favor of ballot access.

Further, in 2022, the Santa Barbara Superior Court (Case No. 22CV01113, Hon. Colleen M. Sterne) rejected an identical challenge to my credentials, denied a petition for writ of mandate, and allowed my candidacy to proceed.

That ruling remains persuasive and is consistent with California law requiring that election statutes be liberally construed in favor of ballot access, with any doubts resolved in favor of the candidate and voters.

The authors demanded reinstatement by April 6, 2026, warning that failure to comply will lead to legal action, including possible recovery of legal fees.

Joe Holland’s Response

Holland states that, per Elections Code Section 13.5, candidates must submit documentation that demonstrates they meet all qualifications established for the office. He posited that the amended Education Code requires county superintendents to possess either a preliminary or clear administrative credential, but that I had only submitted a Certificate of Eligibility, which does not meet this requirement.

The letter further details the minimum requirements for obtaining an administrative credential and highlights that a Certificate of Eligibility is issued only when a candidate has completed all but one requirement, which involves securing an employment offer in an administrative role.

What Holland fails to acknowledge is that if I am elected that is the offer of employment. There is no further requirement for me to fulfill the role of Superintendent.

The document is a Petition for Writ of Mandate filed by me and represented by Julianne Fleischer from the Advocates for Faith & Freedom, seeking to include my name on the ballot for the June 2, 2026, Statewide Direct Primary Election as a candidate for County Superintendent of Schools in Santa Barbara County.

Key Points

1) Background: I submitted my declaration of candidacy and supporting documents, including a Certificate of Eligibility for administrative services, but was disqualified by County Registrar Joseph Holland on March 9, 2026.

2) Legal Basis: The petition argues that I meet all qualifications under California Education Code § 1208 and that my Certificate of Eligibility qualifies me to seek election. The petition asserts that the decision to disqualify me is erroneous and must be reversed.

3) Priority of the Case: Under California Election Code §13314(a)(3), this petition is entitled to priority over other civil matters due to its nature involving ballot placement.

In the Abernathy case, he won his lawsuit, got his name on the ballot, and won his election by 100 votes.

5) Judicial Precedents: The document references a previous court case (Culver v. County of Santa Barbara) which upheld my candidacy on similar grounds, arguing that the current disqualification contradicts that ruling in 2022.

6) Request for Relief: The petition requests a writ of mandate to order the inclusion of my name on the ballot, as well as an award of costs and attorney fees if the petition is opposed.

7) Conclusion: The petition emphasizes the importance of my right to seek public office and argues that failure to reinstate me will cause irreparable harm.

Outcome

Judge Colleen Sterne shifted from her previous position of keeping my name on the ballot in 2022 – with the exact same qualifications for the exact same position – to denying the Writ of Mandate for the Registrar of Voters to “allow” me to run. Judge Sterne did not give clear reasoning, but simply stated that “something must have changed,” so she went along with the Registrar of Voters. The judge took the easy road, did not look into the details of the case, did not deliver justice, and did not do the right thing for me or the voters of Santa Barbara County.

The question is:

Why?

Joe Holland also did not do the right thing, and did not serve justice. He did the easy thing. He is listening to whoever is advising him and he is going along with it.

Is this what the people of Santa Barbara County elected Joe Holland to do?

In 2022, the Santa Barbara Superior Court (Case No. 22CV01113, Hon. Colleen M. Sterne) rejected an identical challenge to my credentials, denied a petition for writ of mandate, and allowed my candidacy to proceed.

That ruling remains persuasive and is consistent with California law requiring that election statutes be liberally construed in favor of ballot access, with any doubts resolved in favor of the candidate and voters.

Holland did not do that.

Furthermore, both the Registrar of Voters and the elections office have refused to refund the $3191.00 filing fee, even though they refused to accept my application to run for Superintendent.

As of now, Ms. Salcido gets to hold on to her position and the Registrar of Voters gets to hold on to my money, without opposition, as Susan Salcido will be the only name on the ballot.

But this isn’t ending here.

My fight continues.

County Supervisors Laura Capps, Joan Hartmann, and Roy Lee are planning to shut down all oil operations in Santa Barbara County.

Why is this a horrible idea?

The number one reason California residents and businesses are paying upwards of $2 more per gallon than the rest of the country is because a multitude of CA politicians, including these locals, have declared war on the oil industry which predates the war on Iran. By shutting down oil drilling throughout the state, politicians of the same ilk have created a shortage of oil that can be refined here. That has led to refineries closing one after another. For the record, our state once had over 40 refineries; there are about seven major ones left.

But that doesn’t mean we are using less oil and gas. It simply means we are importing oil from various places around the globe, and refined gasoline from India and South Korea.

You read that right.

We aren’t just importing oil to our state; we are now shipping gasoline here from these faraway places. Our local supervisors have aligned with the Governor and the state legislature to sabotage our economy while increasing emissions via tankering oil and gas from elsewhere rather than producing it here.

How ludicrous is that?

The resulting high fuel prices by importing oil and gasoline from half-way around the world, coupled with refinery closures, means California residents and businesses will soon see prices of $8 or more per gallon at the pump, according to a study from USC, a study which predates the war with Iran. What’s worse – for our business sector and consumer prices – is that diesel costs even more than gasoline.

Diesel is expected to hit $10 per gallon. This will directly harm farmers, truckers, freight trains, and the construction industry, among others. And it will eventually result in higher prices for consumers, because virtually every product we create and use involves a vehicle fueled by diesel.

However, because no other state has gone this far via the war on fossil fuels, this effort could serve to cripple our economy because our producers will not be able to pass on these higher costs to consumers in a competitive domestic and global marketplace.

Considering the current county budget deficit amounting to tens of millions of dollars, and the county’s own reliance on fossil fuels for such things as paving our roads with asphalt, these three supervisors are doing our county much harm. This has to do with the fact that the oil industry has historically paid the highest property taxes to the county. We are talking tens of millions of dollars per year, especially from offshore oil and the associated former Exxon facility (now Sable) on the Gaviota Coast.

Fortunately, President Trump may end up pulling California out of this political and economic self-immolation. It is well known that the President’s Executive Order that facilitated Sable’s resumption of production could help keep at least one major refinery in business, via the production of some 60,000 barrels of oil per day. However, many people are unaware that Trump could soon sign several more orders affecting the production of onshore oil here in CA.

The Executive Orders

In an exclusive report, Katy Grimes of the California Globe, reported that “seven draft Executive Orders to address California’s war on the oil and gas industry are making their way through Washington, D.C. to President Donald J. Trump. The Executive Orders are intended to ensure that the United States has the necessary fuels from California to provide for its national security”.

These orders include the first one that helped Sable restart.

Order #2 would rescind the California blend which would allow us to import gasoline from other states rather that half-way around the world.

Order #3 would remove and revoke state and local control and development restrictions on both offshore and onshore in-state crude oil and gas proven and potential reserves and existing crude oil production assets (such as platforms) and drilling restrictions to immediately increase oil production, by any means necessary, including here on the Central Coast.

Order #4 would vest all control and management of California crude oil and gasoline pipelines under the auspices and direction of the Department of Energy and other designated Federal agencies.

Order #5 would direct all California refineries to increase jet and diesel fuel production and encourage importation of U.S. refined gasoline products from Gulf of America refineries.

Order #6 would direct the Secretary of Energy to immediately enter into a lease and operating agreement with Valero for the reanimation of the Benecia refinery complex for a guaranteed period of seven years. The agreement would provide for the U.S. government to procure 100% of Valero Benecia refinery production primarily for military uses.

Order #7 would direct the Secretary of Energy, or his delegate, to create an operational and organizational structure for the deployment, oversight, and coordination of the Executive Orders in California and the state’s energy strategies for a period of seven years.

In Conclusion

California has shut down most in-state oil production, which has already led to refinery closures, although we are still consuming over one billion gallons of gasoline per month. Experts are sounding the alarm, sans the intervention of the Trump administration, having to do with the fact that we will soon be incapable of serving the fuel demands of our military and civilian airports, our international ports, along with the farming, construction and transportation sectors of our economy, let alone your average consumer.

This is what we get for electing fact-challenged zealots to office rather than informed public servants.

As the supposedly former congressman Eric Swalwell‘s political career imploded amid a string of sexual assault and misconduct allegations, he had recorded a denial video at a Beverly Hills mansion belonging to idiosyncratic, just-shy-of-billionaire-status Stephen Cloobeck. Swalwell used the $26 million estate as a backdrop for his mythical tale of woe-is-me virtue signaling.

He had stayed numerous times in Cloobeck’s expansive quarters unchaperoned during his run for California governor, which made its debut on the late-night Jimmy Kimmel Show. “A lot has been said about me today through anonymous allegations, and I thought it was important that you see and hear from me directly,” Swalwell said, staring into the camera. “These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They’re absolutely false.” On April 13th, less than 50 hours from the release of his video, he announced that at some time in the future (this is strange in and of itself) he would resign his seat in Congress.

The odd-duck character, however, in this melodrama is the financial angel behind Swalwell’s rise to the top (at an anaemic 15%) of the jungle California gubernatorial heap in the latest polls. Who is Stephen Cloobeck? Well, he is an offbeat, shadowy investor in the not-so-glamorous timeshare real estate business. Cloobeck refers to Harry Reid, the longtime Democrat Senate majority leader from Nevada who died in 2021, as his “adopted dad.” His career in Las Vegas real estate led to the creation of the global timeshare company Diamond Resorts International, which Leon Black‘s Apollo Global Management purchased for $2.2 billion in 2016.

Cloobeck had launched his campaign for California governor from his home on election night in 2024 with Zac Efron and Casey Affleck in the camera shot. Throughout his career, the wannabe insider was prolific in touting his partisan bona fides. Barack Obama was a “frequent” golf partner (so says the not-quite-billionaire) and the former president eagerly included Cloobeck in his cocktail parties and soirees. Also on Stephen’s speed dial are Democrat heavy hitters that include Bill and Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Pete Buttigieg, Cory Booker and we can’t leave out former Cuban Communist Alejandro Mayorkas.

A year after Cloobeck triumphantly entered the coveted California stakes race, he backed out and simultaneously threw his check book behind Eric Swalwell. Five months later, he’s throwing his arms in the air about the sudden politically provoked s**t show, saying in effect, “Who would ‘a thunk”? “If this was such a big known secret in political circles”, then how many others are there on the Hill”? Translated: “How the hell didn’t I know this”?

Living Large With the Low Life Crowd

But this 64-year-old cat is himself no stranger to the rumor mill, or to bad living, if you will. Apparently, he enjoys life in the vicinity of wrongdoing. While Swalwell was conducting sexual seminars away from his wife and children, Cloobeck experienced his latest tabloid bimbo eruption when his 28-year-old fiancée, an Israeli OnlyFans model and former Penthouse Pet named Adva Lavie, was arraigned on six charges after being accused of committing burglary at the homes of wealthy older men and younger women whom she met through dating apps.

Lavie had previously been married to a porn star known as Big Nick (it’s hard to make this s**t up), who himself was convicted of vehicular manslaughter in 2023 after crashing his Honda (not a big spender) into a motorcyclist. According to prosecutors’ depiction of the honey trap, Lavie, also known as Mia Ventura, posed as a romantic partner or travel companion before stealing cash, gold, and high-end designer goods.

While our former gubernatorial candidate (Cloobeck) trolls for respect among the Democrat dynastic mighty, in real life, he plays Boy-Toy with trailer trash lowlifes. The Penthouse Pet is currently out on bail with an ankle monitor and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Cloobeck said, “I wanted to hear (Swalwell’s) side because I wanted to make sure his mental health was okay, because I’m a humanitarian. And I got to the point where I found he lacked integrity.” (The old tycoon is cavorting with larcenous bimbos, and he demands “integrity” from those he lets use his mansion as a crash pad?)

Cloobeck said Swalwell began apologizing to him two days after the allegations surfaced. He went on to say that once he had a fuller picture of the alleged misconduct, he told Swalwell “to get the f**k out of here.” That’s when Cloobeck became creepy and denounced the Democrat Party as an out-of-control viper’s den of reprobates.

Leaving the Party

He now considers himself a “liberal libertarian Republican.” I don’t know if the Republican Big Tent is truly big enough for Stephen Cloobeck. I hope he doesn’t drag his entourage of loose ladies with him (although they’ve lived much of their lives in tents).

Unfortunately, we’re not finished with Cloobeck’s sleazy side. He’s full of apologies for Adva Lavie. “She was wronged”! In 2021, Cloobeck sued another OnlyFans bimbo - er, model - then 26-year-old Stefanie Gurzanski. The suit was for fraud, claiming he only learned about her online work after she left him about six months into their relationship (How can rich men be so stupid?).

Stefanie filed a countersuit, alleging abuse and asked for and received a restraining order against him. Both suits were settled out of court, but not before the “classy” Cloobeck announced to a tabloid that Gurzanski’s b**w jobs were substandard.”

Is there no moral bottom for Democrats running for office? Cloobeck says there’s no overlap or connection to his politics from his personal troubles. All that counts are his intentions and motivations. “I’m willing,” he says, “to fight the good fight and make sure people get social justice.”

Right.

AI, or Artificial intelligence, is a new technology that uses computers to create systems capable of performing tasks typically requiring human intelligence.

New technologies tend to be “disruptors” by permitting the users of computers to “disrupt” the existing rights of the creators of the written, visual or audio works.

The threat of AI disrupting the rights to written works was discussed in my article “AI and Copyrighted Written Works,” SBCurrent March 24, 2026.

Visual works include painting, photographs, video and film.

Paintings

Santa Barbara (SB) has an enthusiastic painting community.

For example, on April 25, 2026, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) is celebrating its “75 Years of Integrating Art and Life” through its SBMA Ambassadors program with an evening of dinner and dancing to honor a legacy that began in 1951 of the SBMA bringing into SB paintings of artists’ representations of other parts of the world.

During those 75 years, another way of “integrating art and life” emerged in which SB artists share their representations of SB with the SB community and the world through Plein Air painting.

“Plein” is a French word meaning “full,” “filled,” or “a lot of” (masculine form, feminine is pleine). The phrase plein air refers to “open air/outdoors.”

Plein Air painting is the practice of painting outdoors in order to capture light, atmosphere, and scenes, directly from nature. It was popularized by 19th-century Impressionists as a quick, Alla Prima (wet-on-wet) technique to finish pieces in one sitting. Essential gear includes a portable easel (pochade box).

While taking painting courses at Santa Barbara Community College (SBCC) I became aware of the SB organizations of Plein Air painters, including:

The Southern California Arts Painting for the Environment (SCAPE) that has exhibits at The Music Academy of the West in the Fall,

The Goleta Valley Arts Association that has exhibits at the Goleta Valley Library,

The Santa Barbara Art Association (SBAA) that has gallery 113 at 8 La Arcada, 1114 State Street and exhibits at such places as the Faulkner Gallery and the Voice Gallery.

“Paint Outs” at the Carpentaria Bluffs both in and out of seal mating season, the UCSB boughs, the “bridge to nowhere, various locations around San Ynez, Goleta beach, Hendry’s Beach, Refugio Beach, Gaviota Beach, to name a few, alerted me that their art reflects the prism through which the artist not only sees but “feels” the subject.

While SBMA share artist visions of the world away from SB, and SB Plein Air painters share their vision of SB with the world, they have both faced the question:

Will AI violate the artist’s rights?

Artists have a “common law copyright,” meaning it automatically attaches to an unpublished work. However, applying for, and receiving, a copyright is necessary for protection after a work is “published.”

However, even after published it is highly unlikely that AI will use their works unless and until they are published on the internet.

However, once a visual work is published on the internet, perhaps through a website or exhibit, then the power of AI to use it becomes a real threat to the copyrights of artists of visual works.

The first cases challenging the use of AI to violate copyrights have involved photographs.

Photographs

Anderson v. Stability AI, Ltd., Midjourney, Inc., and DeviantArt, Inc. (N.D. of Cal., 2023, is a case brought by Sarah Andersen and Kelly McKernan.

Ms. Andersen is a full-time cartoonist and illustrator whose semi-autobiographical comic strip, Sarah’s Scribbles, finds the humor in living as an introvert.

Ms. McKernan is a full-time artist who creates original watercolor and acrylic gouache paintings for galleries, private commissions, and their online store. She has created and owns a copyright interest in over thirty Works used as Training Images.

In Anderson v. Stability AI, Ltd., Midjourney, Inc., and DeviantArt, Inc. (N.D. of Cal., 2023), Ms. Andersen and Ms. McKernan created a Class Action including others whose works were published on the internet by themselves or others and were allegedly used by defendants to train various AI Image Products without their permission that arguably would use AI image generators to create unauthorized derivative works.

This case illustrates the potential complexity of cases that are trying to apply exiting laws to the disruptions brought by a new technology such as AI.

For example, in this case there are already 449 entries in the court docket. On the entry dated March 13, 2026, which was defendant DeviantArt’s answer to the 3rd amended complaint, defendant admits that users can elicit images from AI image products through image and text-based “prompting” and that CLIP models can generate CLIP embeddings, which are low-dimensional numerical representations used to compare images and text.

Judge William Orrick, appointed by President Obama, has scheduled a trial for September 2026.

The number of entries in the court docket indicates not only the complexity of the issues but also the necessity for plaintiffs-artists to have “deep enough pockets” to defend their rights against deep-pocketed entities.

Getty Images has such “Deep Pockets” after being founded by Mark Getty, a member of the Getty Oil family.

Getty Images filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of Delaware accusing Stability AI of infringing more than 12 million photographs, their associated captions and metadata, in building and offering Stable Diffusion and Dream Studio.

This case also alleged trademark infringement arising from the accused technology’s ability to replicate Getty Images’ watermarks in the generative AI outputs.

Getty Images voluntarily dismissing this case in the Delaware court in order to file it in the Federal District Court in the Northern District of California, Getty Images, Inc. v. Stability AI, inc. (N.D. Cal. 2025) on August 14, 2025, shows the importance of selecting a court and a judge, who for this case is Judge Trina L. Thompson, appointed by President Biden.

Stability, in response to Getty Images’ 44-page complaint, is raising the “fair use” defense under the Copyright Act, which provides an exception from liability if the material is used for education or research.

Conclusion

Artists are protected by common law copyrights until their work is published. Courts are currently trying to decide the rights of the holders of copyrights against the use of their works to program AI systems.

Suffering Through the Biden Regime

The Twilight Zone (those old enough to remember) had a famous opening to the show. Rod Serling, the host, would say in his deep mysterious tone, (there were variances of the opening) “You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination.

“Next stop, the Twilight Zone.”

Just allow your imagination to go back to the Biden regime, the Twilight Zone of Torment.

Our southern border had thousands, hundreds of thousands, of humans hunkered across the border, under bridges, getting “processed,” ready to pour into your backyard. Many of which have proven to be exactly what we told you open-border nuts. Millions who didn’t have your best interests in mind. The Democrats lied and tried to a paint a picture that these were all virtuous people looking for work. Democrats continue to lie to this day and are fighting “tooth and nail,” as they say, to keep the hammer-, machete-wielding murderers, gun-toting killers, and rampant rapists to stay in your backyard.

There wasn’t a single march in support of the poor teenage kid who was ambushed and gunned down while pleading for his life.

Imagine if the Democrats gain power again. You will see millions more flood into America and ICE won’t be able to stop them because the Democrats will get rid of ICE. For reasons beyond any commonsense thinking, the Democrats have united proclaiming the protectors of our sovereignty are the bad guys and illegals are the angels. They never address, never admit, that there are truly some bad actors who were let in through our porous border. And they never address, again never show sympathy or concern, for those who would be alive today if the border had been closed. Americans have been slaughtered, and they’re ignored and shrugged aside as causalities of ideology.

Imagine Iran starts up its nuclear bomb-making program again. The Democrats would wave a finger and mimic Biden by whispering, “Don’t.”

Yeah, that’s not going to work.

Doesn’t work on a brat throwing a tantrum in a store and won’t work on a country that hates all of us. And once Iran gets a nuke, you can bet where that thing is going to be flying right after Israel is bombed.

Return of the Woke Monster

Imagine the festering cancer of woke simmering beneath our social landscape clawing for the surface again. Entering the schools like never before. Porn books in class, teaching that everyone is trans and that it’s okay to be stupid. It is written that about 2.8 million people over the age of 13 identify as trans, about 1% our population. Accepting for a minute that number is roughly correct (how would you really count that?), it’s a tiny number out of 350 million people nestled between the Pacific and Atlantic. Based on the news and the attention all this trans stuff gets, you would think it’s like fifty percent. With free rein under Democrat rule, the trans movement will be back in your face like never before.

Look to Canada. They’ve gone bonkers.

Imagine all the progress we’ve made becoming energy self-sufficient and then handing that back over to the loony climate goons who would gladly – and quickly – set us back to 2024 BJB (Before Joe Biden).

Imagine feeling sorry for the tariffs we placed upon all the countries who had been ripping us off for way too long and the Dems remove them. We would go back to losing billions and giving up our power yet again.

Imagine NATO being left off the hook. They would give us the finger, no longer having to worry about Trump.

Imagine going back to feeling sorry for all the criminals and returning to the defund-the-police nonsense again. The murder rate is the lowest it’s been in a century. That was accomplished in less than a year; the Democrats will reverse that in a week.

If you think we have communists running some of our cities and states now, just wait. It will give the Doctor Evils the green light to invest fortunes to place even more of them in power. It won’t take long before we go backwards, to a time the country was in abysmal shape and on the verge of leftist collapse.

Trump is a one-of-a-kind president. It will be a long time, if ever, before someone steps back into the White House with a set like his, male or female, willing to tackle all the critical issues in such a forceful and dynamic way. I liked Ronald Reagan, and he will always be one of the greatest presidents America ever had. Though admittedly he handled things with a bit more finesse.

Imagine how the liberal populace is going to behave should Republicans lose power in the mid-terms. I mean, really imagine it.

What are they going to march for?

What are they going to lose their minds over?

What’s going to make them angry?

How are they going to get through a day with nothing to bitch about?

What are they honestly going to do?

I worry about America going back to the era of woke.

I worry about that a lot.

It took Trump’s winning to tamp down the left’s suppression campaign. However, it did manage to destroy thousands of lives. That was and is so damned wrong, but it’s a social nuke that was very effective and would be reactivated.

I don’t want to go back to the land of nuts. They’re still out there but at least for now, only as background noise. Should the woke monster return to the forefront I think I’ll take up sleeping on a bed of nails. It would be less painful.

Congressman Eric Swalwell is one of the most despicable human beings in politics anywhere in any party. He is a malicious, infectious rodent whose insidious stench has assaulted my nostrils since before the astonishingly egregious intelligence scandal involving Fang Fang, who was, ahem, allegedly spying for the Chinese Communist Party. The guy is a sexual predator and even Republicans should be delighted to see him go, even if the odds of him being replaced by another mindless, creepy Democrat, are 97.3%.

Anybody with a sensitive schnoz for moral debauchery has known the sleazy side of Eric Swalwell for years.

Which raises the question enquiring minds want to know but most likely already sense the answer...

...Why now? Why is a conspiracy of like-minded odious partisans in the media and Democrat circles (same revolving-door cesspool) calling for the hanging of a hitman who never found a lie disgusting enough not to use against the POTUS?

Why is there a sudden and unified cascade of demonization against Swalwell arising from purely political sources within the domestic communist political project, but not from the Hollywood-dominated #MeToo movement?

Could it have something to do with the odd, quirky political situation in the polls two months out from the jungle primary for California governor - where two likeable, sensible guys on the ballot running as Republicans are outdueling any one batter on the baseball-sized team of Democrats crowding each other for attention?

This amounts to a delicious predicament to which Republicans have fallen ass-backwards into. The jungle primary was not an idea that swelled up from the loins of the electorate. It’s the baby delivered solely by those bipartisan elitists and idealists who sensed that closed primaries produced candidates for the general election who represented the “ideological extreme” of both parties. The cause for alarm should that for sake of argument be true never tipped my sensitive inner scales of justice.

California’s Jungle Primary Could Put Republicans in Power

The ideological chasm between the two major parties has grown wider and deeper while according to popular wisdom the more moderate voters have inclined to register as non-partisan or independent. A closed primary shuts out about 30% of California’s voters from registering a “moderating” input on the selection of candidates offered in the November general election, leaving it up to party “extremists” to choose their party’s standard bearers in a low-turnout primary.

In the back of the minds of Democrats, however, is the secret wish and hope that in a 62-38 state (Democrats to Republicans), they (Democrats) would oftentimes come up one-two in a jungle primary, precluding the expensive necessity of tackling a Republican or its political options in the Fall election. (It would become an in-house brawl between socialists as opposed to out-right communists). Sacramento already has a veto-proof state legislature. Achieving the status of two-Democrats-only running for governor in November seals the deal for them politically: Republicans would have no impact whatsoever on statewide issues, as is the case now.

If the unthinkable occurred and two Republicans only ran against each other for governor, assuring a Republican victory, it would be a major public relations embarrassment and disaster for Democrats in a Blue state. Unless Republicans used this rosy opportunity to dismantle the Democrats’ lock on the state Senate and Assembly – at least removing the ignominy of its power to override a Republican governor’s veto by a straight party-line vote – we would have another era of Arnold Schwarzenegger dead-in-the-water government. The jury’s out if that’s a good long-term optic for the California Republican Party.

“Swalwell campaign imploding after new sexual assault allegation” (Politico)

A former staffer has accused Eric Swalwell of sexual assault on two occasions, alleging nonconsensual acts while she was intoxicated.

Sacramento has seen many political implosions.

Usually they evolve like a tire losing air.

This one sounds more like a sidewall blowout at 70 miles per hour.

One day you’re polling respectably. The next day your campaign chair resigns and your donors don’t return calls.

Swalwell, in a word?

Toast.

The woman, who worked for Swalwell for nearly two years, said the most serious incident occurred in April 2024, when she alleges he sexually assaulted her after a charity gala in New York.

The woman said she became heavily intoxicated while drinking with Swalwell late into the night and has only fragmented memories of what followed. She recalled being in his hotel room, pushing him away and telling him “No” as he allegedly forced himself on her.

“I woke up once during it and even told him to stop at one point,” she wrote in a text message to a friend days later.

Yup. Toast.

All the once-charming motels, restaurants, and gas stations along this stretch of “America’s Main Street” are now derelict and in shambles.

Needless to add, all closed.

The only place open was a cannabis dispensary.

Which sort of suggests Route 66 has gone up in smoke.

In February 2026, Congressman Salud Carbajal (D, CA) along with 213 of his Democrat congressional colleagues voted to not fully fund the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Fortunately, the 217 Congressional Republicans voted to fully fund the DHS, and the bill went to the Senate.

In March 2026, Senators Adam Schiff (D, CA) and Alex Padilla (D, CA) joined most of their Democrat colleagues in the Senate in voting not to fully fund the DHS unless there were restrictions placed on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), such as limiting the use of masks by their agents and warrantless searches.

What the Democrat Senators Caused

Massive delays began at airports as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents had to choose between working without being paid and/or seeking other ways to support themselves and their families.

The surprise was not how many of the more than 50,000 TSA agents stopped coming to work either temporarily, or permanently, in order to seek employment that actually paid. The surprise was how many of the agents continued to come to work while working a second job, one in the private sector that pays its employees, while also cutting expenses by doing such things as sleeping in their cars.

Ironically, during this time it is estimated that the average illegal alien receives welfare benefits worth an estimated $61,000/year.

Every person involved in airports from the flight crews to the vendors to the traveling public suffered as flights were delayed, or canceled, and waiting times in some airports exceeded four hours.

Businesspeople missed meetings, families missed vacations or family emergencies, and crew members missed connections.

However, having received a seat through “senatorial courtesy” during an airline strike it is my experience that the Congressmen and Senators are not experiencing the same delays that they voted to thrust on the rest of us.

(An extraordinary event took place at Birnam Wood (a private gated enclave in Montecito carved out of what had been a citrus farm) last weekend. It was an invitation-only gathering to commemorate the life and death of a longtime Santa Barbara/Montecito resident. Organized and headed up by Mary Gates, a close friend of both Ray Winn and Ray’s partner in life and love for more than 38 years, Peter Kevoian.

Some 120 friends and relatives from Santa Barbara, Montecito, and around the world, dedicated their Saturday afternoon to attend a “High Tea” in memory of Ray, who passed away at the age of 92. – J.B.)

High Tea

{In 2017 Ray and Peter went on their last vacation together. Peter knew it would likely be their last one (Ray was confined to a wheelchair at that point), and they had barely survived the bridges of Venice and cobblestone streets of Croatia. They ended their vacation in London and decided to indulge themselves. They took a suite at the Ritz Hotel for a full week. Ritz suites come with full-time butler service. At first, Peter thought, “That’s nice, but completely unnecessary. I mean, who needs a butler? Well, it turns out that I do. Like five times a day. After a few days with our butler Jeremy, I couldn’t tie my own shoes.”

The first day at the Ritz they had a high tea and Peter recounts, “As you know no one does it like the British since they invented it. It is performed with military precision and Ray absolutely loved it. The livery worn by the waiters, the flowers, the delectable treats in that gorgeous 18^th century room. So, Ray said to me ‘Peter, why don’t we sell all of our assets, pay the taxes, and take an apartment here at the Ritz?’ He went on to say, ‘We can enjoy this level of service every day of our lives until we run out of money, at which point we simply kill ourselves.’ I said ‘Ray, you had me interested in your little plan all the way until the end of that story.’ But that was Ray – he cherished tradition, history, and elegance. His wit was always delivered with effortless precision.” – P.K.}

Ray was both brilliant and creative; he was a composer and an adventurer, a writer and an author. He was a serious man who had a childlike mischievousness. For example, he put a mathematical equation on his license plate called the Avogadro’s constant; 6X10E23. (actually 6.02214076 ×1023 mol−1. It acts as a bridge between the atomic and macroscopic worlds, relating molar mass to real-world measurements; it is one mole of atomic matter.)

Ray loved deeply and was steadfast in his loyalty to his friends and this country. He was a proud Republican and could not understand why every American wasn’t.

He was a pilot and a sailor. He owned several planes and boats over the years. His achievements were many. If you indulge me, I can walk you through some of the poignant moments and important accomplishments in his life and career.

Ray was born in Price Utah in a coal mining town to a Mormon mother, five brothers, and a father who worked in the mines. When his father abandoned the family, the mining company put his mother and brothers out into the snow and locked the door to their one-room company house. The next day, his youngest brother died from exposure to the extreme cold. The Mormon Church rescued the family and relocated them to Las Vegas Nevada. There, his mother worked tirelessly taking on two shifts as a waitress per day.

The Airline Owner and The “It” Girl

Ray’s brilliant mind was on full display before age two. He spoke in complete articulate sentences. At age three, he was fascinated by how anything mechanical operated. His mother explained that it was electricity that powered these devices and it came out of the wall through electrical plugs. Ray grabbed a knife and stuck it into a socket. He got a jolt that knocked him off his tiny feet. He didn’t pout or cry. He just got angry.

His grandmother gave him a toolset so he could figure things out on his own. “Here’s the toaster, take it apart and put it back together again,” she said. And he did just that. The vacuum cleaner and anything else he could handle was next, so he could comprehend their function. He quickly understood how AC and DC currents worked.

As a young child he got his first paper route. It was the way boys in his day made money. Ray was different, of course. He chose a paper route that no other paper boy wanted, on the rich side of town and a paper boy’s nightmare. The lots were large and the houses were set way back. It took twice the time to deliver the same number of papers in that area as a typical tract of homes. He couldn’t toss the papers to their doors, so he decided to hand deliver the paper into his client’s hands or at their doorsteps.

This simple act put into motion two transformative events. First, he met the founder and CEO of Bonanza Airlines, a start-up Las Vegas air carrier. This man was so impressed with this industrious little red-headed boy and his sweet smile that he began to give Ray stock in Bonanza Airlines as tip money.

Later, many years later, Ray would cash in that stock and purchase his first house.

The second meeting was even more transformative. He met Clara Bow on his route. She was the First Lady of silent cinema; the original IT girl. She was a beautiful vivacious blonde and did her own stunts in those days. She won the very first Academy Award for acting, along with the entire cast (which was how the award was given at first).

Clara was not the bubblehead image portrayed by the Hollywood machine. She was, in fact, a scholar. She read the Greek tragedies in Greek. She spoke French fluently. She was obsessed with classical music. She collected every Columbia RKO classical album ever produced. She built an entire wing onto her home just to house the voluminous collection. She didn’t allow anyone into her inner sanctum.

Ever.

And then Clara met Ray.

She was smitten by this sweet little boy who got off his bike and handed her the paper. She invited him in, gave him lemonade, and learned that he loved music. So, she began to play classical music for him on her piano. Later, she gave him the only other key to her sacred inner sanctum where she spent hours every day listening to all the great composers’ symphonies. Ray would come and go into her studio daily, listening to every record and learning, remembering, every piece of music he heard, the name of the composers, the names of the conductors, and any discernable differences between the various orchestras around the world.

Whether it was the London Philharmonic or the orchestra in Prague, he knew the subtle differences. His iron vault memory recorded every note played. He fell in love with classical music in the third grade. A love affair that lasted Ray through his entire life.

Ray and I used to play a game. When we drove to our place in Las Vegas, I would play esoteric pieces of music to see if he could name them. I could never trip him up. He never made a mistake. Not once in 38 years.

On to EG&G in Los Alamos

In high school, Ray’s mother was always working and always gone. Angie was a darling woman. She told me directly she couldn’t really keep track of her own children. She just wasn’t home. She told me they were in God’s hands.

She took a rare day off from work to attend a special meeting about Ray requested by the student counselor. She went to the meeting completely ignorant of how Ray or any of her kids were doing in school. She sheepishly asked, “is Ray doin’ alright?” She thought perhaps he was in trouble. The counselor was astounded. He responded, “Mrs. O’Neil, you really don’t know what’s happening with Ray, do you?” She responded simply, “No.” He went on to tell her that “It’s not how Ray is doing in school but how we are doing as educators. That’s why you’re here today. We have given him all senior-level college curriculum books. He has completed all the course work. He has a better command of math and science than our own instructors. He has taught himself how to play five different instruments without lessons or instruction.”

As these things go, word got out about this brilliant boy at Las Vegas High. The counselor spoke to the principal, who spoke to the Chamber of Commerce and then local state representatives. It was decided that Ray should skip college entirely and work with the PhDs at Los Alamos Labs in New Mexico.

They figured out a path for him to do this through employment with a private contractor named EG&G (Edgerton, Germeshausen, and Grier, Inc.)

Prior to going to New Mexico, he married Lorraine, his high-school sweetheart and best friend that he had met in band class. Lorraine was a brilliant girl in her own right with a 160 IQ. They played in the Las Vegas Symphony together and ultimately had three children and years later three wonderful grandchildren.

Once in Los Alamos, Ray went on to file for and receive 33 patents in nuclear weapons design and several patents for advancements in photography principally used to capture the first images ever taken from the surface of Mars.

Shortly after that, Ray was nominated and won as the Outstanding Young Man of the Year for the State of Nevada. Then he was nominated as one of the ten outstanding young men in the U.S.

Touring With Bobby Kennedy and John Glenn

He went on a speaking tour across the United Sates with Bobby Kennedy and John Glenn. Bobby Kennedy became Attorney General of the U.S., and John Glenn, an astronaut. Ray became a top executive with EG&G a defense contractor and ultimately had management responsibility over 14,000 employees.

John and Ray became good friends on that tour. After John Glenn successfully orbited Earth for the first time in 1962, he honored Ray by giving him the watch he wore on that trip through space, to thank him for his friendship while on the speaking tour.

Ray oversaw the private technology side of Area 51 in Nevada, alongside the Commanding General. Ray’s job was to develop stealth technology. When President John Kennedy took a tour of Area 51 for the first time, it was Ray in the helicopter with him explaining why EG&G chose that site.

Ray launched a private airline to transport incognito the hundreds of civilians needed to do the important work in Area 51. He named the airline after the General’s wife, Jane.

It is still in business today.

Country/Western Music Producer

After Ray was done with corporate life he sought a change, a complete change; something totally different to do and something fun. So, he started a Country-Western music studio to produce the next big hit album. He discovered two talented singers named the Perry Sisters in Boston. He produced their first album (“Feelin’ Country”) that got to number two on the Country-Western charts.

It was all going very well; they had a bright future together, until Mona Perry ran off with the drummer and her sister, Sally, ran off with the guitarist. And that brought a quick end to his dream of being a Country Music producer.

Santa Fe Restaurateur

Ray moved to LA to start over. A friend of Ray’s who was aware of his technical gifts, asked Ray if he could solve a serious problem in the manufacturing of semiconductors. Intel, at the time, had invented a highly condensed high-speed semiconductor that performed multiple operations simultaneously.

It was revolutionary.

The problem was that no one could produce it in volume.

Ray, listening to the technical issues and challenges involved figured out the solution almost immediately. Which was astounding, because Dupont, IBM, Intel, TI, Microsoft and all affiliated companies in this business had teams of scientists trying to come up with a solution. Yet Ray, listening to the problem for the first time, understood how to fix it.

Ray went on to invent the Pellicle, which made the manufacturability of Intel’s Pentium chip possible. The Wall Street Journal stated that Ray’s invention was as important to the advancement of computer technology as the invention of the transistor.

And yet, with all these accomplishments, I think that Ray’s proudest achievement was starting a fine dining restaurant in Santa Fe New Mexico. He came home one day and said “Peter, what do you think about starting a restaurant”? and I said, “That’s a terrible idea; restaurants go out of business.”

But I knew him well enough that I said, “You should do it because otherwise you will have regrets having not tried.” Well, in true Ray fashion, Geronimo Lodge was born in 1989 and was an instant success. It continues to delight foodies to this day.

When I ate there for the first time, I had to be honest with Ray. I told him I didn’t care for the bread that they served; I thought it was a bit boring. He agreed. And – literally – the next day he purchased a commercial bakery. The restaurant had amazing bread after that.

In closing, while I remain utterly shattered, I know that we were both lucky guys. We became better people because we met each other thirty-eight happy years ago.

The last time Ray spoke to me was at Cottage Hospital. He didn’t have much time left. Speaking was almost impossible. He had no strength left. His last, almost inaudible words, were “You are my hero.” And then he closed his eyes and never spoke again.

In his final hours, I put my EarPods in his ears so he could listen to his favorite Mozart compositions. As he took his last breath, Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was playing; that was his most favorite of all the pieces of music Mozart wrote.

Peter then thanked everyone who had attended Ray’s memorial, especially, “The Birnam Wood family, and the doctors and caregivers who selflessly attended to Ray’s every need twenty-four hours a day: Dr. Jones, Dr. Mezipan. Dr. Bechtal, Dr. Gundry, Marybeth with VNA, Netty, and Patricia; and so many, many, more that made up our medical team.”

Peter saved his last individual praise for the woman behind this very special Birnam Wood event: “Saint Mary,” he called her, explaining that he redesigned Bob and Mary Gate’s historical Montecito home several years ago. “Little did I know,” he said, “that another angel had just entered my life. Mary has been there every day for my mother while she was with us [before she died], and then with Ray.”
