You put together, Henry, one of the most excellent articles The Current has put out. It is really hard to get one's mind around some of the incredibly hateful and nasty comments that have come out in praise of the Kirk murder and how many supposedly "intelligent" people have made light of it. Like you, I was not overly familiar with Mr. Kirk's life before his death but after listening to clips of his speeches, I have to shake my head as to why the hatred of him by some people was so intense. Thank you for your article. I am sure a lot of people will relate to it.
God is calling every human to Himself. Sometimes it is the whisper of rustling wind in the trees as we contemplate our mortality. Other times it is the roar of witnessing the cosmic clash of good and evil. Whether we are experiencing the whisper or the roar in the events of the last week, the origin of those feelings is the same. God created humans with an inherent knowledge that He exists, and wants us to know and worship Him. The realization of this fundamental fact of life is the beginning of wisdom. That was Charlie Kirk’s primary message to us all. He will be sadly missed, but what Satan means for his evil agenda, God can use for good. Stay tuned and keep looking up.
Beautiful, Henry. I'm also 72. And as I've said before here, I recently nearly died from Septic Shock. So I hope I can be forgiven for quoting what I wrote about my near-death experience right after Charlie Kirk's assassination on my own Substack: “one of the most common sensations we Sepsis victims experience, as we’re rushed to the ER and spend time in the ICU, is an overwhelming feeling that we’re dying. I don’t mean merely the anxiety that might flash through your head during the seconds following a car crash. I mean: it’s the actual feeling of “dying.” After all, with Sepsis (kicked off by the very ominous Cytokine Storm) you aren’t just fighting bad infection, your entire body has turned against itself. You’re shutting down. Bit by bit, you’ve started the process of dying. It’s a really weird, ugly and horrifying experience…. And it has made murder and suicide, as it’s done consciously by humans, completely incomprehensible to me. Why would anyone kill another person or kill themself, except as the only way of self-defense or the only way out of misery? My own body nearly killed me, as though it had become a demonic force completely divorced from my mind. I know the apocalypse the body can unleash… The great pianist Arthur Rubinstein said, after his failed suicide, that his psyche changed. He suddenly love life unconditionally. As Louis Armstrong sang, ‘It's a wonderful world.’”
Thank you for sharing, Polly. A few years ago I was about to play in a golf tournament when my wife called me. She said she was feeling really sick and thought she had to go to the hospital. My wife is a tough woman and when I heard that I knew something was up. She too had septic. Doctor said if she came in any later she would have died. Said he lost a woman the week before for the very same thing. After four days in the hospital she was home. Glad you survived too Polly. Nothing to mess with. I have a young friend whose four year daughter said she wasn't feeling well and fighting fever. She died 48 hours later. The point being, like Charlie and so many others, we don't know the time our clock is going to run out. Live. Enjoy life. Be kind. And don't hate. I had written a song couple years ago that almost fits with the time we're in. It's entitled, "24 Hours Left to Live." The first verse is, "If you only had 24 hours left what would you?" Ask yourself, what would you do?
Wow. I'm so glad your wife is ok and so sorry for your friend. I started a Substack two weeks ago about Sepsis. It was a miracle I survived and am intact - I had severe Septic Shock, was in a coma, and in Cottage for seven weeks - so this is my way of thanking Whoever's in Charge by hopefully helping others to survive. I will also be writing about Post Sepsis Syndrome, which has only recently been recognized as a very real thing for survivors to contend with.
I second what you just wrote, Henry. Btw, Noozhawk published a dopey piece a week ago - September is Sepsis Awareness Month, so I guess they had to. They did say to get treated early, but they quoted a medical “authority” who advised people to avoid Sepsis by getting a Covid vax. ??????? Meanwhile Dr. Paul Marik, who was, in 2016, conducting successful treatments for Sepsis - and was being recognized for them - was cancelled and demonized just for suggesting Ivermectin during Covid. So much for Sepsis. My Substack is Polly's Newsletter/Polly Frost/Substack.
Mr. Schultz, I truly believe the Living God was and is calling you to Himself in that wonderful sense of peace that washed over you that day…”Knock and the door will be opened to you”…I pray you will knock.
One of your best Henry. I have watched many of Charlie Kirk’s podcasts and am completely at a loss when I hear people claim he is anything other than a very smart guy who understood deeply the importance of God in our lives and was motivated to dig deep and express the truth of complex social and political issues. Cherry picking parts of his views to misrepresent his message as radical without the benefit of his ENTIRE message in an attempt to justify his killing is pure evil. Believing and worse, promoting these distortions, is an act of emotionally driven, shallow thinking which often denies both common sense and human values.
Sir, you are an excellent writer and one of the attributes in your legacy will be the pen you held to speak the Truth. May the Lord of the Heavens continue to visit you and speak into your life. May what happened 2,000 years ago embed in your heart and continue to give you life. Thank you for sharing your gift with this one life that matters as well, me!
You certainly matter Henry, because you have a special gift that shares the confounding nature of the human experience. Within these mysterious complexities of the human body, there is a cellular affinity to touch a transcendent soul. You help us seek it and touch it. Thank you for your column. While yet another generation may be touching their own mortality, for the first time too.
I am 72 too, lucky and happy to be alive. I never heard of Charlie until the day he was murdered. Since that time I have learned he was a very important role model for the younger generation that very much needs one. I appreciate your writing about him and sharing your experience.
From another 72 yr old: Henry, life is an amazing albeit difficult puzzle and getting the “frame done first” makes easier work of the jumble, disappointment, chaos and confusion in the middle. The frame of this life for me is God, the creator, revealed in the God-Man Jesus, our redeemer, who lived, died and rose for EVERYONE. Hearing that call—the knock of Jesus on your heart—and responding in faith is THE TURNING POINT we all are offered. It has made this mysterious, marvelous puzzle of life have meaning, shape and a certain future. I recommend it!
Some people are more important than other people overall. For instance, when the Santa Barbara News Press went bye-bye, I almost had a stroke. No more could I read sane and intelligent opinions locally. Somehow I found James Buckley's email and asked him to send me his opinion pieces, and let me know what publications he might be writing for so I could get them. I thought I would have to contact each person individually. Little did I know that the ever clever Mr. Buckley was already cobbling together the Santa Barbara Current with all the regulars. Aaahhh! I could breathe again.
Mr. Schulte, your sane and logical opinions along with all the others at Santa Barbara Current are much appreciated (even our eclectic and mysterious friend, Mr. Eringer). We 72 year olds have to stick together. Keep up the good... scratch that, the excellent work.
Stephen, Thanks for your kind words but I don't deserve all the credit. James Fenkner and Bonnie Donovan (with support from Christy Lozano and others) were as instrumental in breathing life into our old(ish) bones as I am. I hope too that I was supportive enough to have answered your query!
Thank you for your positive feelings and quite amazing story, Henry. This morning, I sent a message to my Florida high school classmates talking about things I did in the past, such as supporting Sara Bareilles and her band when she was singing at the Hotel Cafe ... way before she came famous. Discovered her on a BOCA album (Best of College A Cappella). And I also talked about my 1980's singles club I founded in Santa Barbara with eventually about 500 members. Many marriages were created which I hoped didn't result in miserable divorces. I really felt responsible for the marriages I helped to create. In turn, I wish people would feel responsible about the lives of everyone. Such as what they say and do to not create evil in others which kill the innocent. Safety and quality of products is a big issue with me when involved in engineering products. I don't at all understand how people can kill another person. The concept is foreign to me. This includes wars and I could never even kill the enemy and Putin's senseless killings are unfathomable. I understand the increase in killings from a technical perspective. I understand there are simply more people in the world and communications via social media has a great impact. But I sincerely want there to be much less death in the world, if at all possible. Better physical and mental medicines for all ages, an improved outlook of living, people finding positive interests, less accidents ... anything to save and improve lives.
What a wonderful story, Henry. Your retelling of that special moment near the cabin was one of those special moments we all can experience if we stop and listen to the world. The Universe is always talking to us. As a Taoist, I believe in supreme consciousness. If people want to call it God, fine by me. It's the same. When asked, I often tell people that I have a constant conversation with God, although I think of it as supreme consciousness. We can all experience those special moments when we turn down the volume of the world, rid our thoughts of possessions, wants and needs, and sit quietly in nature to listen to Universe, while existing in the ‘Ever Present Now’. (Pro tip, best to ground with the Earth to help spark the moments. Barefoot on grass, dirt, sand -- or better yet to sit -- so that we can sync our frequency with that of the Earth.)
PS, I’m a 10-year cancer thriver. Have no fear (mind killer). Made the decision long ago that it's not gonna take me. So life is grand as I walk The Path (love everyone, do the right thing in each and every moment, all day long, for the rest of one’s days). Makes everything else easy, simple & pleasing...
so happy that you found peace … FYI, starter kit…maybe this will show others the way…

Well done, Henry. Thank you.
