Trump Derangement Syndrome is the stupidest thing even a Trump hating California Leftie can indulge in. It is the only thing the ruling party, which happens to be Democrat, has to keep their power because they aren't doing a damn thing to make California a better place or make anyone - except illegals - have better lives. I grew up here when it was a two party state. That was when the elected officials listened to those who might vote them out. Now we have a local government that doesn't even make the pretense of caring what we would like for this city. They are, in fact, openly hostile to us. Take Salud Carbajal. He prances around giving it to The Big Bad Orange Man, but he won't stand ip to the state or federal government and tell them to stop being a noise and air pollution problem with jets over Goleta or to shove their plans for the eight-story disaster being constructed behind the Mission. What kind of idiot buys into this? Well, mostly old white people, who feel like they're decades younger, once again burning the Bank of America, when they call anyone - friend, neighbor or family - a Nazi if they so much as use the wrong word (yesterday on SB Current the punishable word was “Libtard”).
You do know that Chad was glad to do this. Most of the stores became Carrows decades ago. You’d have to be blind not to see what a difficult brand the name Sambo became in the 70s and 80s.
Some look at it from a political position and others, like me, for a brand and marketing point of view. As a man who is on the brand teams for Pfizer, Nokia, lucent, and others, I’m talking branding. When a brand goes toxic, you can either throw lots of money at it or do a name change. Musk changed Twitter to X., Facebook is now Meta and aunt Jemima‘s is no longer. Change isn’t always a bad thing.
Is it OK to bully someone into changing a name? SAMBOs was a catchy name, adorable mascot and brand. It made us smile at the friendship of the small boy and his yellow tiger. My dearest friend is called JIMBO . He isn’t offended. BIMBOs bakery trucks zip across town. The me2 crowd hasn’t burned the vehicles … yet. NIMBO is a cloud type and kindergarten learning videos. I suppose it’s attention. Those who need it will find a way to get it.
So what role did you have in marketing Pfizer's poison shot? Did you promote the lie that the shots were 98% effective and safe? I wouldn't brag about being associated with a giant marketing fraud.
You know you've lived in paradise too long when your idea of a worthwhile thing to do is point out racism in names for restaurant, high school sport teams… there is trash you could pick ip off the beach, you know.
Apparently there is a severe shortage of actual racism so the morons on the left must imagine it. Listen Dan you idiot, Sambos, Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben and the Cleveland Indians are not raciest except in your pin head.
Apparently there is a severe shortage of kind, non-hypocrite-like thoughts in your head. You are the one that posted we should "all come together, blah, blah blah." Yet here you are slinging insults. Poor Jeff.
Nice bit of research which has nothing to do with Chad's. When they changed their name the original chain was gone. The problems the chain may or may not have had in the past did not affect in any way the popularity if the original Sambo's which was and remains popular irrespective if the name change. Like an Emily Litella sketch instead of saying "never mind" when it was pointed out that Sambo was not black, Chad revealed himself to be a spineless wimp.
Some see it as a political thing and as a man who was on brand teams for Lucent, J&J, Nokia, among others, it about marketing. But it is a good thing to stir up the conversation.
I bow to your experience as member of “brand teams” but must point out that Sambos was a very popular before and after the name change. As a side note I have found people that use expressions like “brand teams” usually don’t know shit from Shinola. I am sure that is not the case here but just sayin.
We still call it Sambos when confirming 8:30 breakfast as usual in Cabrillo. After 45 years, his grandson had Chad’s dinner house on Chapala. I was told directly BLM threatened, SBPD Chief had already taken a knee, the then Mayor knelt and ordered a police stand down, and the business insurance carrier advised a name change to quickly get them all to go away. Chad wasn’t weak; rather lacked required security. Blame SBPD for being political, not non-partisan. Stand down orders are common here. No one cares. We pay police to be ‘nice observers’.
Do you think they should have caved? Sambo was Indian and not black. They did not have any of the Sambo cartoons that were used in the chain restaurants. Do you find my black car racist? Yes it is still popular but I will never support wimps. They should have changed the name to Wimpy’s.
Jeff, I'm betting you got ghosted from the Fire Department because, like here, you come off as a grumpy old man who will never be happy. They are just playing kick the can and hope the next shift has to deal with you screaming from your lawn.
Great article Pat. Yes, Republicans are very much shunned and persecuted just like the early Christians. As someone who has lost contact with a close family due to TDS, I can relate.
It should be obvious to all that TDS has evolved into a full blown mental disorder. Wondering how long it will take for the APA (American Physiological Association) to deem it as such and lobby for CPT coding which will enable reimbursement for mental health providers to bill for their services?
Seriously, take a close look at the folks on Cabrillo last weekend. Why are those on the left seemingly ALWAYS in need of a “crisis” in order to express outrage and anger? Take your pick, climate change, sexual identity, racism, immigration and now Trump. It would seem demonstrations, confrontations and altercations are all part of their DNA?
When I look back at the 5+ decades I have lived in SB County, it has always been a hotbed of social unrest going back to Vietnam, whereby “activists” felt so strongly about US involvement in Southeast Asia that they were compelled to burn down the Bank of America to validate their indignation!
Must be something in the water causing constant outrage with these folks?
Maybe check the lithium levels in our local water supply, cause and effect which would explain the rationale for their constant nutty, unhinged behavior?
"Republicans are shunned and persecuted" - So are Carlists, by the Janus-like Republicans, MAGA individuals, etc. How ironic to complain about what you dish out. And besides, if you're like the early Christians, you should embrace this ostracism, gladly.
Wouldn't lithium help nutty and hinged behavior? Maybe we should replace fluoride with lithium in the drinking water and the whole country might get along better...
The irony of claiming to be “America First” and then have Elon “We will coup whoever we want” as an unelected part of the government is astounding. Civil servants with decades of deep knowledge about public policy have been unceremoniously removed from their positions, including vets. I don’t think the destabilization of our country is apparent enough to the MAGA crowd, hence my term Trump Denial Syndrome… tough to be in the middle of all this with clear, non partisan eyes.
If you have ever worked for government, public schools, universities and cannot see massive fraud, waste and complacency then you are pert of the problem. I have been calling the fire department for a week now trying to get an answer to a fire safety question. They rarely answer the phone, do not return calls, do not respond to messages and never follow-up. We could fire them all and nothing would change.
Eric Holder wasn’t ‘elected’ either but was a wrecking ball in the Fast and FURIOUS gun trafficking scheme that cost two border patrol agents their lives. Forget that one? Ya. The families didn’t.
“Civil servants with decades of deep knowledge about public policy have been unceremoniously removed from their positions” - with that sentence you made my day. Thank you for reminding me of why I love my president.
It is a great point. I'll slide the point to Cars Are Basic. Started by a combination of local business owners who were concerned about the destruction of the street grid going back to 1998. We grew and at one point for years had a majority of those "D" people on our Board.
When it became obvious that Statistical Evidence collected by the combination of the Bike guys (now know as Move) and the City of Santa Barbara proved both the decline of "alternative" to cars and also the slow destruction of Retail in Santa Barbara it hit the FAN.
If you even mentioned CAB in mixed social gatherings it was a ring of the plague.
What is now seen in Calif. is the failure of forward projections of tax based income to support both the street grid destruction as well as subsidy of failed public mass transit.
Want to watch your social calendar wither away with people you thought were friends?
Mention you want State St. opened (did someone mention former Mayor Lodge?) Call for widened, streets and stopping the intentional narrowing of streets that make them more dangerous. Ask why the the supposed "bike demand" never materialized. Ask why the City of SB staff, and Council will not demand a change based upon reality vs. fantasy?
It isn't Trump Derangement it is half a century of failure by one party at the national level.
To quote the author "DOGE at the national level is lifting the curtain to reveal how much worse it has been than any of us had any reason to know.""""""
The curtain of failure by the one party system at the Santa Barbara City Council has lifted the curtain and the waste of Administrative Staff and Rubber Stamp Council cannot be covered up.
Once identified as an "Outter" you have found speak softly because those who you thought were your friends will disappear. The outrageous spending will continue.
When I was elected to SB Council you would be amazed how many closet reasonable folks there are in SB. Both Dem and GOP.
They are not the type to come forth, sadly.
I was with a monthly dinner group for over 20 years. When they asked if I was jabbed and the answer was no they told me I could no longer be in their presence. That was almost 5 years ago. I haven’t received a whisper from these 6 friends.
Guess what they have demonstrated they were never my friend.
Be civil and gracious but never be afraid of expressing your opinion. It’s honest and brave. You’ll discover who really cares about you
I guess I am a person you would say has TDS. Let me try to explain my view. I’m from NY and know more about Trump than I care to. What frustrates me, is that it seems so obvious that Donald Trump is a Con man and a bad person. Yet MAGA people seem completely oblivious, “We admit, he’s not perfect, but he’s the best we’ve got.” Are you kidding? The people who know him best (Not us lefties, but relatives, employees, and associates) say he has no moral compass. We worry that any decisions he makes are made based not on what’s good for the country but what’s good for him, personally (and financially). I realize anything I say MAGA people will refute; “Donald Trump lies.” Answer, “All politicians lie.” “Look at his history, over 3,500 civil law suits, two impeachments, felony and sexual convictions.” Answer, “He was framed.”
I agree with the author that it is a shame that we can lose friendships based on political views. When I had a discussion with a MAGA friend and said he sounded like a cult member, he was offended and said, “I think for myself.” He’s still a friend, but we talk about sports.
Thank you for your thoughtful response. I would add that much Trump support is not based on the man but instead based on the effectiveness of his policies and his ability to execute them. Not perfect by any means but the “promised make, promises kept” has been stronger with Trump than any administration in my lifetime.
I share your high expectations and think we should all expect more of government - be it Federal, State, or local.. You are correct that not every promise made has (yet )been kept, although inflation is down and at least this administration has been working for Peace ( rather than stoking war like the previous admin). I for one am excited to see more progress on the Presidential To Do list.
You kindly shared some of the remaining important items on the To Do list. Here is a partial list of the promises kept in the first 6 months of Trump 2.0.

Transportation and Technology:
Restored American airspace sovereignty and unleashed American drone dominance (June 6, 2025).
I don't care what kind of person Trump is or whether or not he has a moral compass. I'm not married to him. If he steers this country away from the Titanic-sinking iceberg previous administrations got it headed towards, then he's got all the compass he needs to be the best president we ever had.
Actually, I’m disappointed in both parties. I think a conservative friend put it best, “It’s very depressing to think we have to make a choice between those two.” Although I would have liked to see a woman president. And no one could be worse than Trump. Maybe my faith in the American people is failing but I am beginning to agree with Chris Como that America needs a third party.
MC: Fid you support Harry’s? Why? We had only 2 choices. Most of us voted for best choice or lesser of two evils. Some frustrated voters tell me there was no choice. That’s how our primary system works. Harris can’t handle anything beyond dressing for a social event, and smiling. She defines ignorant and stupid. Four years as VP and failed at her one & only job assignment. Trump is bombastic, self serving, a huckster, who is good at branding, selling himself. Many supporters aren’t pleased with his personality, incestuous hires, his degrading word choice but he’s at the helm. After years of no leadership, 2016-2020 years were far better than the corrupt Biden years. The Democrat Party is over. Back our POTUS. I applaud Trump’s intent, and actions on Day 1. He’s accomplished much starting with closing the border, appointing Kash Patel, RFK Jr; and DOGE, etc. Now, we’ve confirmed huge waste. There’s no denying: Implementation has hit numerous bumps in the road. He’s gone fast, made some reckless decision knowing the clock is ticking. He’s smart. I remind myself his intents are good. He’s a man of action. He’s focused on results. He seeks to right wrongs and past neglect. No one is perfect. We all know—- Buildings don’t get built without a construction team in motion under one project manager. Communicate with his team, and Congressional Reps.
To respond. Yes, I voted for Harris. I keep repeating myself: We had 4 years of Trump. 154 Historians had voted him one of the worst presidents of all time. Not my opinion, theirs. I know you keep talking about what a disaster the Biden/Harris term was. In my opinion, it wasn’t so bad; low marks on Afghanistan and the illegals. Not so bad on the other stuff. We’ll have to wait to see what historians have to say. Now for the new Trump: He has done a good job on cutting the illegal immigration. That’s it. The rest of your comments are largely spin stuff. In fact, he has broken the law, ignored directions from our Supreme Court, and illegally deported many innocent people along with a few guilty ones (anyway, who knows, because none of them have had due process.) As for DOGE, that’s a good example of the triumph of politics. Yes, Elon Musk went in and discovered waste and fraud. Surprise! Now he is frustrated because a few people have been fired but the Deep State thrives. Trump’s Big and Beautiful budget will set records for waste and spending. Musk said it best, “The budget can not be both big and beautiful.” As a side note, instead of talking about all this fluff, what we should be talking about is our national debt, a balanced budget and the legacy we are leaving our children. As for Trump being smart, I think cunning would be a better word. I will give him credit: I think he and his family will make a fortune, literally billions of dollars during his presidency. As for the rest of us, not so good.
Michael, I grew up here but I lived in NYC for nearly 30 years. I like a lot about New Yorkers, but I can't stand their schadenfreude. They don't give a rat's behind about the morals of Trump. What really bugs them about Trump is his success, that he's done everything they haven't, from being a billionaire, to having a hit tv show to being president. They want to see him in jail, disgraced. And they disguise their schadenfreude under the most putrid air of moral superiority. Give me a break. These “friend, employees, family” would themselves do far worse if they could be Trump.
Polly, I will agree, I don’t give a rat’s ass about Trump’s morals. As bad as they are. But I do care about character. And, as for people being jealous of his success, give me a break. It’s all an illusion. He’s had what? Nine bankruptcies and no American banks will do business with him. When I call him a Con Man it is because he (and his spin doctors) have done a masterful job convincing many Americans he is the master of the deal. Yet 154 historians, who rate presidents, in his first term, had him at the bottom of the list. We have a president who lies to us all the time. Are you comfortable with that? He does not have to be perfect… but criminal?? I’m concerned about the future. If he tells us Iran is planning to attack America, is this true? Or is he lying because he has a personal vendetta. Who knows? I do not want a president I cannot trust. And as for wanting him in jail, not true, we just want him out of our lives.
I always enjoy seeing you here. I just got insulted by Montecito93108 on today's SB Current because I don't want to see this pkay about female justices. Lol!
Brave of you to step forward. Happily the mules have no political leanings much less derangement outbursts. I am a moderate that is politically marooned but I am not “triggered” by the mere mention of you know who. I happily acknowledge positive political decisions and scratch my head at others. As it should be, I think. But, man oh man, try and mention a positive policy Trump has enacted to the wrong person and stand back……….no critical thinking at work. Pure derangement. It has been unsettling to watch this in action. It explains a lot of the atrocities of the past.
We all have friends and family members who have cut off more than half of the Country because of their political opinion. It is a blessing really, do we really want faux friends and fake family members in our lives? I lost about 6 'energy vampire' family members including a sister. Life has never been so peaceful and I thank them for the gift.
For all the torture the liberal leaning Dems have provided us for the past four years (minimum), I'm delighted they have acquired a disease only associated with the Dems, namely TDS. I salute TDS and may it live on forever, a disease that seeks out the numbnuts in our country. And even better, there's no cure, their bodies often appearing as pretzels.
It depends on the person, their intelligence and style. I have a gal-pal who is about one step away from being a complete Communist. I love America and Trump and am 2 steps to the right of John Wayne. We exchange little digs, comments and ideas and laugh about our differences.
I agree there is no objective truth today just spin. My comment above stands for it's very accuracy.
More pertinent, for example is Republican Sen. Mike Lee's controversial social media posts about the assassination of a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband after several people criticized the Utah Republican for his comments.
-- Lee made posts referencing the attack and featuring images of Vance Boelter, the suspect in the shooting.
The post was captioned "This is what happens When Marxists don't get their way".
or
Majorie Tayler Green voting for BBB, admitting she had not read it and then saying I would not have voted for it if I had read it. The absolute gall of it is mind blowing for me.
Where does the Santa Barbara Current stand on the BBB. Good or Bad? It certainly will not lower the debt burden the country faces.
US politics is in the dumpster. I hope there is a way out.
Great Article Pat…yes, TDS is very real. I believe much of it can be attributed to our news feeds as well, pressed into society by the deep state operatives that run the mass media complex. Also believe that a person‘s “comfort level“ can be affected by frequencies and vibrations through our phone systems, thereby keeping people on edge emotionally, a desired effect. And yes, it’s the CCP, with assistance from the upper business class and politicians that have been compromised. They want us divided, they want race wars, they want class wars, they want religious wars, they want political wars, they want us divided.
Fortunately, people are waking up en masse. The last 4 years woke up more people than the last 4 decades…and the last 4 months woke up more people than the last 4 years.
Bravo. I appreciate those who write for the Current and comment on it who use their real names. Pseudonyms are a manifestation of fear- what if someone knew that you hold opinions that your “progressive”neighbors do not like? The dominance of bad ideas and evil is allowing them to go unchallenged. Remember the term “ the silent majority”? We need to speak up and have the courage to identify ourselves. In my case, in the past, it has meant a brick through the rear window of a car and red paint thrown on a door at my office. I doubt that the brick throwers have become any less aggressive in trying to silence opinions they hate. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a hero of the Christian faith and he was martyred. His words still ring true. “ Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act”
We who believe in God given truth and the morality found in the scriptures cannot be timid, and hope that the demons will run away. We are in a spiritual war. Speak up and use your name. And Christians, name the name of Jesus.
Great article! Articulate and well written, but really spells out the extremity of the polarization in our present culture. It makes you wonder if this is what it was like in the run up to the Civil War or the McCarthy Era.
Tragic losses of marriages, friendships, and social cohesion.

Great piece Pat. I was disgusted when Sambo’s caved and became Chad’s. The whole thing was just so lame. What wimps.
You do know that Chad was glad to do this. Most of the stores became Carrows decades ago. You’d have to be blind not to see what a difficult brand the name Sambo became in the 70s and 80s.
Blind, to what Gene? Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, Cleveland Indians, all racist?
This is how socialism works, they put us at war with ourselves.
Awesome comment LT

My dearest friend is called JIMBO . He isn’t offended. BIMBOs bakery trucks zip across town. The me2 crowd hasn’t burned the vehicles … yet. NIMBO is a cloud type and kindergarten learning videos. So what role did you have in marketing Pfizer's poison shot? Did you promote the lie that the shots were 98% effective and safe? I wouldn't brag about being associated with a giant marketing fraud.
I was on the Viagra launch team. Why all the anger?
That sounds like a fun story!
That explains everything.
LOL, yes LT those are all racist! Once again, it doesn't happen often but we agree, now go get your box and shine my shoes!
“Shine your shoes,” Dano? No bruh, I doubt you own a pair of dress shoes.
Seriously? You never saw the movie "Goodfellas?"
Know it well, which part?
You know you've lived in paradise too long when your idea of a worthwhile thing to do is point out racism in names for restaurant, high school sport teams… there is trash you could pick ip off the beach, you know.
Polly, I guess you missed the post above mine. LT was the one that posted these names. . .
OK. You don't have to pick up trash. On a completely unrelated note, since you're a landscape architect, do you know Isabelle Greene?
Apparently there is a severe shortage of actual racism so the morons on the left must imagine it. Listen Dan you idiot, Sambos, Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben and the Cleveland Indians are not raciest except in your pin head.

Wimpy's would be a nice name for a hamburger joint.
Wimpy's IS the name of a burger franchise in England.
My ford was built before they fagged out.
Jeff, I'm betting you got ghosted from the Fire Department because, like here, you come off as a grumpy old man who will never be happy. They are just playing kick the can and hope the next shift has to deal with you screaming from your lawn.

I work in the Waterfront, the line is out the door seven days a week currently.
I have seen you out there with your metal detector.

I didn’t forget that.
“Civil servants with decades of deep knowledge about public policy have been unceremoniously removed from their positions” - with that sentence you made my day. Thank you for reminding me of why I love my president.
He’s a civil servant too lol. He serves Israel and the billionaire class first though, huh?
Oy. Why don't you turn your attention to the corrupt people ruining this city while pretending to be elected officials?
They’re bad too.
Now back to my lawn.
"Promises made, promised kept"???
Like "Ending the war in Gaza on day one."
Like ending the Ukrainian-Russian war "Even before I get into office"?
Like "Inflation will end on day one"?
Like "We're gonna ban TikTok"?
Like, "We'll get Greenland, one way or the other"?
Like, "Canada will become our 51st state"?
Like, "We'll take over Gaza and make it fabulous, like nothing you've ever seen."
Like, "I'll release my taxes"?
Like, "I'll declassify the Epstein files."
Like, "We'll be unveiling our healthcare plan in a few weeks"?
Like "I'll never start a war"?
Like, "We're gonna win so much you'll get tired of winning"?
Like, "I'm a stable genius"?
I share your high expectations and think we should all expect more of government - be it Federal, State, or local.. You are correct that not every promise made has (yet )been kept, although inflation is down and at least this administration has been working for Peace ( rather than stoking war like the previous admin). I for one am excited to see more progress on the Presidential To Do list.

At least Trump has not betrayed our country and has no sold his soul to our enemies !
I don't care what kind of person Trump is or whether or not he has a moral compass. I'm not married to him. If he steers this country away from the Titanic-sinking iceberg previous administrations got it headed towards, then he's got all the compass he needs to be the best president we ever had.
You must be real disappointed that Harris isn’t your president?
Actually, I’m disappointed in both parties. I think a conservative friend put it best, “It’s very depressing to think we have to make a choice between those two.” Although I would have liked to see a woman president. And no one could be worse than Trump. Maybe my faith in the American people is failing but I am beginning to agree with Chris Como that America needs a third party.
How about not letting the ideal get in the way of the possible?
You have your view of Trump and I have mine. Have a great week!
Thank you, Polly. It’s fun to disagree in a civil manner. Who knows? If you decide to run for President, you’ve got my vote!
Brilliant! Merci! CJC
It depends on the person, their intelligence and style. I have a gal-pal who is about one step away from being a complete Communist. I love America and Trump and am 2 steps to the right of John Wayne. We exchange little digs, comments and ideas and laugh about our differences.
Ah TDS. It follows the Trump play book 101. Acuse the other of their own issue.
The only TDS for me are the people who are blindly following him.
I believe it is called projection in psychology circles.
is no there no objective truth? Just spin and deflection?
The BBB is crap and MTG has surprisingly turned over a new leaf in the last 3 weeks or so.
"The only TDS for me are the people who are blindly following him." I agree.
Thank you for this excellent reply!
Brilliant as always, Pat. Truths.
