“county officials plan to make it so expensive to use natural gas that only the wealthy will have that option.”
So once again we see our elected public servants picking winners and losers in their vision for a brave new world that denies basic fundamentals of science and engineering.
Just like the housing mandates, the EV chargers ordinances, and all of these “encouragements”, these public “servants” have completely lost the thread of who they serve and what the end goal is.
What is the end goal?
-To make housing more expensive to build and less convenient to live in? Yeah it does that!
-To cut down on C02 emissions? This doesn’t do that, as the C02 will just be produced over the horizon to produce the electricity to run the appliances. The sky is big and stuff done “over there” tends to blow “over here”…remember the Thomas Fire everyone?
-To stop climate change? Assuming that is the end goal; then before these bureaucrats get involved in our financial decisions, maybe they can tell us what target climate we are shooting for…is it the climate we have now? The climate we had before the Industrial Revolution?? The climate that existed in 1962?? When was it perfect? What is this crap? These people are not scientists and even if they were, their hypothesis will be proven wrong in the end just like they always are…because we don’t know enough and aren’t powerful enough to change the climate for cryin out loud!
Maybe they should turn their attention to things more practical like maintaining our roads, policing our streets, securing new sources of water because we live in a desert, clearcutting forests around homes to cut down on wildfire danger, legislation to get home insurance under control, lowering the cost of medical care (not the same as forcing insurance companies to offer insurance)…like Captain America, I can do this all day!!
But telling us we have to pay more and make sacrifices in our standard of living and that will somehow “fix” the climate on a planetary scale?? This is insanity. These people are clueless bureaucrats on a power trip virtue signaling tour that never ends.
At a recent city Council meeting in Goleta, I was treated to an ordinance that will demand all new construction over $200,000 will require at least 20% of the parking lot be equipped with EV chargers… except for the hospital who will be exempt because…reasons??
Never mind, the fact that the EV chargers, they are demanding being installed are 10-year-old technology standards for 20 year old EV battery designs that will be superseded over the next few years and will add cost to the “affordable” housing they wish to build here.
It’s literally like mandating every car maker install 8-track cassette systems in cars after we have already moved on to CD’s!
So now they want to “encourage” us to go all electric? Why? Have the “encouraged” the universe to change the laws of physics to provide us free electricity or something? Or just shifting the pollution from one area to another?
There is no such thing as “free energy”. The laws of thermodynamics have gone up against millions of challengers, brilliant scientists as well as charlatans, carnival barkers, and snake oil salesmen throughout history.
Thermodynamics remains undefeated.
The price for energy exchange is always the same throughout the known universe. Mother Nature does NOT bargain, negotiate, give free samples etc.
maybe the government once took money from one group and spent it on another to “encourage” development but that is not “free”.
I'm pretty sure Jenn's comment was about free to user programs back in the 1920s. But you are correct in absolute terms. Let me guess, you've got a BS in mechanical engineering....
Andy, thank you once again for your sanity in a beautiful city that's being threatened by the insanity of its officials. Das Williams, Laura Capps, Joan Hartmann are so driven by their desire to rise in the Globalist Green Elite dictatorship that they've lost their marbles. If they're so high on us going all electric, then they should stop flying in jets on our tax money and instead use e-transportation to travel.
Andy's piece is the only journalism of any substance I've read this morning. I was just wading through MSM to see if there's been anything found out about why there were no cabinet meetings at the White House for so long, and there was no explanation. But I did learn a lot about RFK Jr's sexting with that journalist, because this is of the greatest importance. Or rather, they're trying to ruin him and Trump. Give it up MSM. RFK jr happens to be one of the sexiest men ever alive. He just is. Are women now going to hold this episode against Trump? No, RFK jr is right now being bombarded by sexting from millions of women. If I wasn't happily married I'd sext him. I don't care if he's a cad. I love RFK jr like every other normal woman in the country. He stands for the right things and he has a six pack. Now can MSM do a little reporting on the actual crises we're having?
Polly he's my kind of guy, too. He collects roadkill to feed his falcons and ravens he enjoys training. You can't get sexier than that! And he's my kind of a prankster, too. He dropped off a bear carcass in Central Park, an act taking imagination, planning, preparation, execution of the task and lots of bravery! Men are not manly anymore. He should get the Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett Pioneer Medal for Roadkill Hunting.
How they miss your point. Stay with The Current for the good it does despite some low points. I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes: Those who do not read the newspaper are uninformed. Those who do read the newspaper are misinformed. This is the only local forum for alternate information and opinion and the only place not infected by progressive dogma. Your posts are a read that refreshes.
Love your insights & genuine personality Polly…here’s a bonus edition with RFKjr…the man is head & shoulders above most politicians, so I see the sex appeal…stay tuned, the movie is just getting good…
Wow Polly: your sexual fantasia are really off topic! However good to know you’re into sex texting. Anything else you want 4500+ SB Current followers to know about your sexual interests or pursuits? You complain about media, then you participate. I don’t get it.
Thank you. My husband read the part from that commenter about how I had shared my sext fantasies about RFK jr with the 4500 readers of SB Current - horror of horrors. My hubby said I shouldn't leave until I can share with 45,000 readers.
Interesting points. I don't follow county politics very closely, but I bristled when I heard that the City Council was pushing for an all-electric mandate. Electrical outages are the norm around here and it's nice to have a few appliances working when it happens. In my opinion, gas stovetops are better. Do we even have the infrastructure to support everyone going electric?
The global warming hoax is in many ways like the covid injection hoax but on a longer time scale. There is an existential threat to humanity requiring government mandates and government spending and reduction of your liberty. These are all the goals of authoritarian governments, to expand government power and reach and why they love emergencies. Eergencies are simply excuses to suspend those inconvenient rights granted by our constitution. And when there are not enough emergencies they must be manufactured. I am reminded once again of Laura Capps enduring with visible disdain the comments arguing against mandated covid injection for teachers. The science was clear that the injections prevent contraction and spread of covid. She went even further to comment that descenting voices were whipped up by bizarre websites spreading bizarre misinformation. It turns out that the science, the CDC and Fauci were all wrong and the bizarre websites were correct. The injection did not prevent contraction or spread. Was Laura humbled or deterred in any way? No! With global warming we are told of the existential threat that is fossil fuel but we will not really see any tangible aspect for hundreds or thousands of years. The science is clear we are told, yet every prediction made by the climate models has been wrong! The only predictions that have not been wrong are those which are for the far future. This is a case of politics masquerading as science. And as we all know when you mix science and politics you get politics
Yep Andy, you nailed it again! Our progressive masters continue to increase the cost of living upon those who can least afford it by way of their elitist agendas to create the problem. Then our liberal elected leaders & their beloved bureaucrats require the struggling middle class to make life more “affordable” for others by requiring us to subsidize their local housing, food, water, utility and medical care costs. Where’s the off switch?
How can the silent majority that surrounds us sit at home and choose not to rise into action? Fear is a lame excuse. Do something!
There will be more mandates, reckless spending, taxes and bonds forced on the declining number of taxpayers unless and until we each budget time weekly to act, to advocate, to right wrongs, to support candidates who are not progressive career politicians. My gas bill $30; electric 12 times higher. SB City Water District bill so high it’s painful, due to ‘block 1 subsidized affordable rate’ and poorly negotiated contract with MWD.
"How can the silent majority that surrounds us sit at home and choose not to rise into action? "
The same reason they're okay with abortion - they don't care about the inplications of these liberal beliefs and don't care about morality. Same reason why pornography still exists even though most people know it's bad.
Are you saying 97% of the American population — the silent majority — doesn’t rise into action because they’re immoral? Isnt it because advocacy is outside their comfort zone, or because they’re oblivious, or because of real fears? I never linked someone stranger’s definition of morality to the political complacency. Your posts remind us of the importance of the Declaration and the US Constitution. Individual freedom and rights must be protected.
Liberalism and liberals since their inception have created and promoted a culture of death begininng with the French and American revolutions and leading up to the modern day as they continually discard tradition, faith, and family...
Conservatives preserve the culture of death and are merely the liberals of yesterday. Indeed modern conservarism as espoused by individuals like Edmund Burke was simply a "sensible revolution" that promoted "moral and restricted" decay... it was fundamentally classicly liberal and todsy conservatives defend the reoublican, constitutional, and secular instituyions that hate them and their ideas, even if they share the same foundations in liberalism.
If you hate the progressivr status quo so much as a "moderate" then there is no real solution. You need to reject the whole system and immoral society in favor of a Catholic, monarchic, and moral one.
Yes. Most people including conservatives continuebti embrace the same liberalidm that has broughy on this decay. Indeed you bringing up the Declaration of Independence, the Consitution, and indivual rights shows exactly why society is crumbling, mosy people ideolize these products if the enlightenmeny when in truth they're just worthless secular documents (and masonic dishtrags), and true rightd and freedoms are that which uplift truyh and goodness.
I bought my little house 25 years ago, and I often congratulate myself on the modifications I made to it that I very much doubt I now could due to the changes in regulations. It was great fun transforming a 1948 box without insulation, with aging pipes and knob electrical, into my charming home. Of course I have a gas stove and the original under-floor heater, and during outages I could still cook. Now what I dread most would be the repeal of Prop 13, that would elevate my annual property tax to an unsustainable amount and would certainly encourage me to leave the state. Which I do not want to do.
Sacramento officials are certainly chipping away at Prop 13 to increase the cost of housing. There are multiple costly ballot measures on the November ballot: Vote NO! Many elders, workers, families are already struggling and stressed.
Lowering taxation & bond approval thresholds from 2/3rds to 55% — or a simple majority 51% — hurts both property owners and renters (except those occupying tax exempt government financed housing or property.) Newsom’s dictatorial plan to exempt all bonds from any voter approval is the final straw. One more of his creative plans to fund pension liabilities at the expense of only taxpaying property owners.
I fear that the credulous underclass will want to "stick it to the man"... those "rich who aren't paying their fair share" and so will vote to increase taxes on anyone who has worked to own property. And because our school system no longer effectively teaches math they will be shocked, shocked I say, when their rents and the cost of everyday items are raised.
Thank you, Andy. As usual spot on! The three amigos are constantly wringing their hands on how to incentivize developers to build more housing; yet they are clueless to the fact that they are actually disincentivizing the private sector with this moronic plan.
Great summary and article, Andy. Your comments perfectly illustrates how the leftists in power seek to mandate their extremist climate views on the rest of us. They are forcing us into a self imposed energy crisis, all while we have an abundance of energy and resources waiting to be realized! Can anyone imagine forcing restaurants not to use gas stoves?
BTW, great to see Fred Flintstone on the cover. Reminds me of my youth. The other characters were great too..Barney, Wilma, Betty, Mr. Slate and Joe Rockhead!
Then it dawned on me, that’s what the left is trying to do…take us back to the Stone Age, where we have to peddle our cars!
Andy it gets worse. On the Gov. desk ready to sign is SB1221, which will allow the gas company to opt out of serving certain pilot communities as "priority neighborhood decarbonization zones". You can bet SB and Carpinteria will be one of the first to sign up. This will force new and existing buildings to be all electric
The addiction some of our local leaders have to virtue-signaling about global-level issues (at our considerable expense) is really impressive. As others have said: is simply managing the drab but necessary everyday affairs of our city and county — potholes, policing, budgets — just too un-glamorous for the likes of Joan, Das and Laura? Local politics *should* be dull as dishwater. But perhaps our troika have plans to move along to state, national and international politics, and perhaps they see their absurd, costly local crusades as nothing more than positioning for the greater fates and career steps that await them.
Does anybody know what the ordinance Andy is writing about is called? Do local ordinances have names? I have no idea. And is there anything we can to combat it?
Btw, in a spirit of sharing-is-caring, a couple of links for those who appreciate regular, informed, skeptical looks at the sustainable energy/Net Zero scam:
There are lots more, of course, but these are the two sites I check in on most regularly. Bonus points in both cases for being generally very well-written.
The Climate Change/Global Warming crusade has been the death of a genuine, useful environmental movement, btw. If anyone’s interested, lemme know here and I’ll write up a quick paragraph about how it happened.
Completely agree. Thank you for the links. Toby Young has always been independent of the British MSM. Definitely would be interested in your paragraph. Can you put it here as a reply?
Once the public comes to terms with the realization that "looking good" isn't the same as actually being intelligent and making good choices, then bad choices of politicians will continue. We are all now provided with a good experience of the "looking good" factor has no relationship to the level of someone's intelligence. We have high level politician's incapable of completing a sentence or thought or making a decision.
Same thing is realized with the County Supervisors which have the same level of intelligence of a gnat that might be buzzing around someone's head right now. There's no reason to make a list of everything they do is simply stupid, doesn't take much to define "stupid." Stupid only needs to be defined by a few ridiculous political actions in turn placing them on the Olympics Stupidest People pedestal. Das gets First Place standing on the top of the pedestal, Joan and Laura need to fight for the 2nd and 3rd place position depending whichever left or right side of Das they wish to stand.
Thanks Andy for illustrating one of the ridiculous, anti-climate change, these seeking power are taking to harm us. With just a scitilla of research that group would learn that whenever you find oil, you undoubtedly also find natural gas. Oil can is easily be stored: not so for nat gas. That is why you so often see it being burned off at the site. Secondly, electricity, that mostly comes from burning fossil fuels, is the most expensive way to heat your home or business: ask any chef what type of power they prefer to cook on.
Just when you think things cannot get worse. Once again thank you, Andy, for the information in your article. I also appreciate the readers input which is helpful to find out even more on how corrupt and how far down the slippery slope we have fallen in this county. I hope we will survive until the next election to not only vote these people out but put in new ones that will actually work for the people instead of against them.
Thank you, Andy. Not so long ago, the same folks espousing all-electric today were touting natural gas as clean, plentiful, and cheap -- which remains a truthful statement. Remember when the downtown trolleys were all gas-powered and such fun to ride in, especially down State Street during the holidays?
Their days are numbered. Even here in SB County! The public is sick of covert tyranny. The understanding that these “authorities” derive their power SOLELY FROM OUR CONSENT will lead to the simultaneous understanding that we are NOT bound to any of the ridiculous rules and regulations they deceptively impose to further their authoritarian agenda. Their fake virtue is nothing but a cover for their ruthless desire for control.
“county officials plan to make it so expensive to use natural gas that only the wealthy will have that option.”

There was free electricity before they hijacked the system
Remember it’s probably every 100 years or so they erase what they have done or try to..
no one around to tell us the truth
The only thing I’m sure of
Is God..
Wasn't the free electricity like 100 years ago and for rural homes?

Stupid only needs to be defined by a few ridiculous political actions in turn placing them on the Olympics Stupidest People pedestal.
“don’t know the difference between a suggestion and a mandate. “
The Criminal Syndicate aka Government does not take no for an answer.
As with all Criminals they only care about themselves. As evidenced by the Green scam and we saw their coercion through Covid.
So they could make money off the people.
The question is how does Capps, and her cronies get paid for coercing people to comply?
I"m pretty sure that every trash truck operated by Marborg is powered by NG. And aren't some city busses, too?
Their days are numbered. Even here in SB County! The public is sick of covert tyranny. The understanding that these “authorities” derive their power SOLELY FROM OUR CONSENT will lead to the simultaneous understanding that we are NOT bound to any of the ridiculous rules and regulations they deceptively impose to further their authoritarian agenda. Their fake virtue is nothing but a cover for their ruthless desire for control.
