The author opens with two questions and a comment: "Why do they cut away or not report the rest? Is it because they want to push their agenda and that the chants of support from most of the graduates didn’t fit into their world view? I believe this is the new norm in reporting."

Ah, I also miss the days when there were "only three networks insulting our intelligence"! One of the fixes is to not limit yourself to just one source for information. My cable provider includes a channel called NewsMix which displays four networks simultaneously (CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and BBC). Watching it provides a quick and easy way to compare the "spin" being given to news stories. What is captioned a "Pro-Palestinian Protest" on one network is captioned an "Anti-Israel Protest" on another, like they think we won't notice they are not the same thing. I have found less "spin" on BBC coverage of U.S. events, PLUS BBC provides news on the rest of our planet that often does not even appear on any of our domestic networks. You can easily scroll between the channels. Other options require you to view just one station, such as the English language editions of France Press 24, Deutsche Welle, and Al-Jazeera. I used to also watch RT (Russian TV), but it was removed by my provider. My father used to comment after watching the 3 news options "Interesting, but what did they not want us to know?" ...inquiring minds want to know!

Thank you, Bonnie, for being the eyes and ears so lacking in local “news”. I don’t bother to look at KEYT, unless there is a natural disaster actively occurring. When I do, am dismayed by the delay in up to the moment critical information. John P gets out there, ultimately. I don’t trust the owners of KEYT any more than I trust gas station sushi. My alternative source of local news used to be the News Press. The fact that Wendy was the first person to use her paper to endorse Trump, combined with her libertarian bent, was a refreshing alternative to the political views from the Independent and Ed Hat. That left the Noozhawk. It’s failure to mention the Easter, 2 years in a row, combined with the recent celebration of nurses ( Margaret Sanger 🤷) have resulted in my dropping it. That basically leaves the Current. Thank you James, Jim and Bonnie!

Bonnie, Regarding your initial question as to how different entities present different “news”: there can never be two realities. There can NOT be two different facts at one time : for example, “one and one is two”, or “ one and one is three “ defies reality; another example is “Joe Biden won the last election “ (fact ) vs “I, Trump, won the last election “. One of those last “facts” is not reality.

As a pursuer of truth and reality, it is my experience in reading yours and other writers. in this substack: almost all the writers are not dealing in reality as presented by the majority of what I perceive to be intelligent , critical thinkers, honest writers and real news reporters of the political scene.

Additionally and most important: most of the writers on this substack are all biased Republicans. Why don’t you allow a challenge to the ultra-self-serving, politically biased LACK OF FACTS AND REALITY which appears here, week after week? Where is the REALITY, the FACTS of what gets written here?

Did any of you have the intelligence to listen to a man, grounded in reality, on Stephanie Ruhle’s show last night? I’m referring to your fellow-Republican, Mitt Romney. How refreshing to hear him speak of truths, even when he criticizes a Democrat.

The writers on this substack may attract uneducated religious readers, but you will never convince intelligent readers who receive facts about the Reality of our present political scene and from their own eyes and ears as well. How can you tolerate listening to the pathetic lies of one very sick, uneducated, self-serving, multiply-indicted criminal named Trump?

One aspect of all you writers here which I never never see is this: No one ever makes one true factual statement regarding what Trump plans to do to enhance our Democracy IF HE gets to win the election. That man ( or “orange turd”, take your pick, not my words ) speaks only of the disaster and punishments he will inflict. Where are his promises to help Americans….all of us? Isn’t THAT the function of an elected President?

“ I AM YOUR RETRIBUTION “? How very sick he is.

Greeting Nancy...appreciate your well written comments, but generally disagree with several of your points...

1. "There can NOT be two different facts at one time : for example, “one and one is two”, or “one and one is three“ ... Joe Biden won the last election fact v Trump won the last election."

Unfortunately, Our “main stream media” is comprised of very few Truth tellers & many many dishonest (corrupt) news outlets...causes disbelief & confusion (all engineered)...so, depends upon who to believe...most no longer believe MSM, as evidenced by small & contracting viewerships/readerships…many believe that Biden won the 2020 election fair & square ("most honest election in our nation's history", so we're told), but more than half the nation believe that the election was unfair (80,000,000 mass mail ballots - what could go wrong?…ballot harvesting, ballot mules, 5 key swing states halt vote counting in the evening/overnight hours, boxes of Biden ballots delivered late, etc, etc, etc)...

2. "most of the writers on this substack are all biased Republicans...any of you have the intelligence to listen to Republican Romney on Stephanie Ruhle’s show last night..."refreshing to hear him speak of truths."

I did watch Mitt Romney on MSDNC last night... interesting interview & I appreciate your thoughts on his "truths"... while I'm not a Republican (quit the Republican Party when they ran Poppy Bush in '92 (another corrupt political player) and voted for Perot (always wanted to send an outsider to Washington to shake the tree), I agree that many of the articles & comments on this forum lean right...but it takes both the black & white shades to paint the picture...PS, I believe that Romney is on-the-take and/or compromised…

3. "The writers on this substack may attract uneducated religious readers...how can you tolerate listening to the pathetic lies of one very sick, uneducated, self-serving, multiply-indicted criminal named Trump...No one makes factual statements about "Orange Turd" (your label, not mine) plans to enhance Democracy if elected...speaks only of the disaster and punishments...where are his promises to help Americans…

I could be wrong, but you seem to hate Trump…he's just a man (an imperfect being like the rest of us humans)...hate is a funny thing...it requires daily physical (calories, mental effort, hormones) resources...people engaged in the "hate" process will typically also seek external reinforcement of that state by social contact, diet, and specific practices, including religious rituals...one can be trained to hate, by other humans, or by their experience within this Matterium, BUT you can never be a passive hater..."hate" requires real work...that's not for me...

4. "I AM YOUR RETRIBUTION“? How very sick he is"...

Trump considers himself a wartime President (as he announced in Spring 2020 when we were hit with C19)...he also stated that the President has extraordinary powers (true statement...see Abraham Lincoln's use of such powers to save the Union)...we are at war Nancy...our country has been captured (all 3 branches)...believe it or not, Trump is leading the counterinsurgency...

Continued staff make-work costs city taxpayers far too much in these days of precarious city budgeting. You just illustrated a major one - predicating actual remunerated city staff work based solely on an oft-repeated, but unsupportable hoax. Yet none can dare say this in the current political climate: "the king has no clothes". (aka the Climate Change™ hoax). How did we get so silenced?

City make-work also includes duplicating services already provided by the county. Case in point - Environmental Services now reborn as the city's Sustainability Division features a waste disposal event, which is a service already duplicated by the County and UCSB. Besides their own self-promotion, what is the value of duplicating this event?

A serious approach to the city budget short-fall is to audit city/county duplicative services. How badly do we need to retain them? Which ones still serve only our own unique city resident needs?

Which city staff employees should be cross-trained to fill other neglected city missions? Like surveying all city streets for their current state of major potholes. Then creating a budget and checklist, while participating in their speedy remediation. You know, kitchen table issues. The ones we city residents face here and now. Not some inchoate "climate change" netherland.

What exactly is the issue with rent control? Seems rather predatory that a land owner can sick up the prices of rent by thousands of dollars in some instances?

Expand full comment
J. Livingston's avatar

Willing seller meets will buyer remains the best way to deal with the rental marketplace. Within the construct of "Protestant" values since that is part of our regulatory DNA, if you wish. Rent control is confiscation of private property. If a property rents for the asking price, it is de facto affordable. When it doesn't it is then subject to market forces, which is the seller's sole choice. Including leaving it vacant, rather than degrade its value.

Instead, are you asking about government-mandated social engineering, which is something entirely different. A dangerous free market control that is best not initiated by the self-interested and uninitiated, that is inflicted by ham-handed fiat on the more responsive market economy system.

Put any demand for rent-control into the context of the past 50 years of local housing demand and local housing supply. No matter how much new housing has been added, no matter how many of those units are now under some form of government control, it is never enough. Then what? (Besides boring a hole in the city long-term financial health.)

Rent control limits the housing supply. Declining to non-existent turn-over rates in this premium area is a primary consequence of local "rent control", so where does that leave us in the big picture when for arcane reasons some get wind-fall housing and never leave, but most do not?

Like Ulysses protecting his crew from the Sirens luring them to their deaths, at some point one must put figurative wax in our ears before the whole ship goes down and we become another Ventura/Oxnard sprawl. Or a forest of high-rises blocking our unique mountainous back drop views.

The Carlist movement, while primarily focused on political and religious traditionalism, also had distinct economic principles that were influenced by their broader ideological commitments. Indeed, their economic views were generally opposed to both socialist/leftist ideals and the free market liberalism that characterized the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Economic Principles of the Carlists

Corporatism: Carlists often supported a corporatist economic model, which emphasized the organization of society by corporate groups, such as agricultural, industrial, and professional sectors. This model was seen as a way to mediate between capital and labor, promoting harmony and cooperation over class conflict.

Distributism: Although not uniformly, many Carlists were influenced by distributist ideas, which advocate for a wide distribution of property and economic power rather than concentration in the hands of a few (capitalism) or the state (socialism). Distributism is rooted in Catholic social teaching, particularly the encyclicals "Rerum Novarum" and "Quadragesimo Anno," which call for a social order based on justice and the common good.

Anti-Liberal Economics: Carlists were critical of economic liberalism and laissez-faire capitalism. They opposed the free market ideology that often led to the exploitation of workers and the undermining of traditional social structures. Instead, they favored an economy that upheld moral values and supported family and community stability.

Protection of Traditional Economies: The Carlists aimed to protect traditional economic activities, particularly agriculture, which they saw as the backbone of Spanish society. They supported policies that would safeguard rural communities and traditional ways of life from the disruptive effects of industrialization and market liberalization.

Subsidiarity: Reflecting their broader social and political philosophy, Carlists supported the principle of subsidiarity in economic affairs. This meant that economic decisions should be made at the most local level possible, allowing communities to manage their own economic affairs and reducing the role of central authority.

Social Welfare: While opposing socialist redistribution, Carlists did believe in some forms of social welfare rooted in Christian charity and social justice. They advocated for policies that would support the poor and vulnerable, reflecting the Catholic commitment to the preferential option for the poor.

The Carlists' opposition to both socialism and free market capitalism stems from their broader ideological commitment to a third way that harmonized traditional Catholic values with economic justice. They viewed socialism and communism as threats to religion, private property, and family, while seeing liberal capitalism as a source of moral decay, social inequality, and disruption of traditional communities.

Sorry but as a Catholic I reject protestant values and embrace Catholic Social teaching, I also am not concerned with a "free-market" because it isn't necessarily moral, and can be abused. Catholic Social Teaching emphasizes the rights and dignity of man, and of ensuring that people have their material and social needs met.

1983 Charter of the Rights of the Family

Beginning from the foundation of the dignity and sanctity of human life, Catholic social thought holds that human persons have a natural and universal right to decent housing.

In the words of the Second Vatican Council, “There must be made available to all people everything necessary for leading a life truly human, such as food, clothing, and

shelter…”1 The council was following the teaching of St. Pope John XXIII that shelter was one of the key “means which are suitable for the proper development of life…”2

In the following decades, the Church expanded its understanding of the right to housing. In the words of St. Pope John Paul II, We are convinced that a house is much more than a

simple roof over one’s head. The place where a person creates and lives out his or her life, also serves to found, in some way, that person’s deepest identity and his or her relations with others.3 This right to housing also has been enumerated in international documents, including the 1948 U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 25, 1). In 1949, the

U.S. Housing Act declared a national goal of a decent home and suitable living environment for every American family.

"The family has the right to decent housing, fitting for family life and commensurate

to the number of the members, in a physical environment that provides the basic services for the life of the family and the community.5 St. Pope John Paul II also underscored the importance of housing as critical to human and family security, one of the three essential elements of the ancient and current concept of the common good.

When So-Called-County-Leaders sue each other over, yes descrimination, you have a major problem folks and face it this place is rife with incompentence.

Where is all of that fair and safe practices of DEI, "WokeSpoke" Non-Discrimination in SB and CALI?
