Bonnie: Readers need to know Salud’s “voting record and a record of accomplishments he can defend”. He has consistently been awarded a “F” or “F-“ grades by Congressional Rep tracking organizations. Salud has done nothing to fulfill his Constitutional obligations to uphold laws passed by Congress. He hasn’t promoted prosperity by bringing back our federal tax dollars to improve lives within CD-24 which includes all of Santa Barbara County. Moreover, Salud prioritizes and only represents who he defines as “his people”. Nice guy who can’t and won’t do the job we need done. He’s ineffective, must be scripted, and worse has conflicted loyalties.
It’s far beyond time to elect a prepared, proven leader who will represent ALL citizens and residents. VOTE BOB SMITH!
He won’t debate. He doesn’t have to, and he knows it. The Democratic machine will take over and do all his dirty work to get reelected by getting all the children at UCSB worked up to vote and put their X next to the D. Unfortunately that’s all it takes based on logistics in this district. Sad but true and I’m disgusted with the adult that won’t do their homework and vote in their best interests. Toxic empathy does not begin to describe their stupidity.
Between the very large numbers of transient renters and out of town UCSB students, our current voter demographics undermine any possibility of deeper political investments in our community. Too many that vote (aka get recruited by the Democrat machine and their unions) don't stick around to pay for the consequences of their votes. Fact.
Ain't "democracy" great? If you live, work, pay taxes, are registered to vote, or own real property in this area, the stakes could not be higher when one chooses not to vote. These skewed transient local demographics, exploited every election do work against us. They play; we pay. Do not lose your place at the table. Vote.
The concentrated density of Isla Vista voting population is easy for political forces to harvest. Word to the wise.
Attacking the local oil industry, destroying their high-paying jobs and creating vast off-limits marine sanctuaries that also prohibit economic development used to secure our local fiscal independence, is the only Carbajal work product I can point to.
He brings no balance or thought to this job; just patent virtue-signaling. And a slavish devotion only to his party handlers.
It seems the Progressocrats have taken a page from Muhammed Ali's famous "Rope-A-Dope" strategy...cover up, weave and dodge, protect against punishing blows, let the opponent wear himself down trying to engage in the fight, and when the opponent is essentially out of time and weary, deliver enough of a blow to carry the day. Biden disappeared for months in his basement. Becerra was nominally mute when "debating" Hilton recently. Carbajal is doing the same (as he has done in every correspondence I have made with his office on specific issues). Our fellow Californians who choose to accept the RopeADope tactics, will get exactly what they deserve...inept, indifferent representation, and sustainment of Tax and Spend into oblivion from career Politicos who have never created an original $, but simply spend yours.
Thank you for writing. Debates are very important to a voter. Debates are usually put on by local media personalities. Where are these media personalities like Jerry Roberts, Nick Welsh and Josh Molina, et al that would help decide a candidate's qualities for the voter? Perhaps writing to the above personalities requesting a debate between Carbajal and Smith might at least provide a reason for "none planned"; writing to Carbajal would be another possibility. Is Carbajal that confident that it's unnecessary to debate? If so, rather arrogant. Perhaps another reason is that his record has nothing to show regarding accomplishments; this fact would be revealing. It's not the end of the world not to have a debate, but it is negatively noted. My respect for the media personalities and Carbajal is lessened when avoiding an important political position debate is not held and brings the question of their worth to the community.
One can only wonder why and suggests that Bob Smith would prevail, which is all the more reason to help him win!
Good article. Denice Adams is right in her comment. Salud has everything to lose in a debate, and Bob Smith has everything to gain. Salud has been re-elected before by "his people" who see him as their guy. Salud has made a profession out of what he is, not what he could do. Can't see him in the private sector making a living. He is a professional politician sitting in a cozy seat. Bob Smith can win, only if he makes a very good impression among the voters, who, hitherto, have voted for do-nothing Salud. Then of course, there is the 25% to 50% voter disadvantage for Republican candidates to overcome. I am very impressed by Bob Smith's credentials and will vote for him; we need someone of high intelligence and action in that seat.
Superb article Bonnie. Thank you. Both you and Congressional candidate Bob Smith went in depth on the questions and answers voters need to hear.
Crickets from Carbajal is a very troubling response and an insult to those paying his salary for the past 22 years. Get out there and debate Bob Smith, man to man Carbajal.
Obliquely, Carbajal's refusal to debate demonstrates a degree of intelligence not always on display...albeit a decision made by his handlers and puppet masters. They know it would not go well with his record including the embarrassment he created for District 24 by physically going after federal law enforcement officers while advocating for open borders, illegal aliens and attendant child trafficking.
Carbajal's strong suit is the happenstance of his ethnicity. I suspect if both candidates shared the same last name there would be a clear winner predicated on resume alone.
Carbajal is fearful of a debate. He knows that Smith is much smarter than him, and could easily rebut any erroneous claims the Salud might make. Salud claims Smith will lie; Salud is the master of twisted, vague, and elusive words. I've watched him from the beginning of his political career as an associate in Naomi Schwartz' office.

The only good thing Salud has done for America - is not doing much.

Well done.
There should be no question about the different paths to their experience in the debate.
Let the games begin. It only will serve the public in their choice.
Good one Bonnie

Straw poll: Who squelched "free speech" more?
1. Congressman Salud Carbajal's pre-emptive debate blackout with no facts in evidence
2. President Trump restricting WH press room access to reporters with a long, disruptive history of false reporting
Carbajal is fearful of a debate. He knows that Smith is much smarter than him, and could easily rebut any erroneous claims the Salud might make.
