I should know. I spent 40 years in wildland fire fighting and forest management.
The only thing the Forest service was a leader in, in the last 20 years was DEI and mismanagement. Oh yes, also, NONE MERIT promotion. That combined with fake environmentalism Lead to the worse, catastrophic fires in California history.
Climate change has been the greatest scam by government And political opportunist. It has only been surpassed by Fauci and big Pharma scam.
So many incompetent people Are in place now that Are causing these unheard of disasters.
I Remember fighting with my supervisors that said that aerial fire fighting was too expensive and they tried to get rid of our local air tanker base. We dodged that bullet when one of the few congressmen stepped in to stop that disaster.
But that didn’t end the corruption. Those same supervisors closed our air tanker base during initial attack on the Jesusita fire That was criminal to me. The fire then exploded The government even attempted to blame a local garden tool shop for the fire because they sold the weed cutter that was used in the area.
Until bureaucrats are held personally accountable for their corrupt decisions, this will continue. And citizens will pay the price and suffer the consequences
Excellent article, but I must say way too much common sense. You are probably a white man too- you are to blame for this too!! I lived in Ca. for 40 years and loved it but I watched as stupid people were elected and the state went downhill. I truly hope people have woken up; recall Newsom, Bass, fire DEI hires and put some smart, know how to get the job done, throw out environmentalists, quit climate change lies..the list goes on and on. Time will tell. Meanwhile how many Ca. wackos will relocate to my state of Nv!!
'I've been here for two weeks now, and I can tell you, smart move,' Cain said of his relocation to Nevada. 'My son is ten times happier here in Las Vegas. If I wanted to do anything out of Malibu, it took me 45 minutes to an hour to get anywhere. Here, the longest I'm driving is 20 minutes.'
Good commentary, Andy, on the deplorable ruining of our state. Common sense has flown out the window long ago while political correctness and DEI have become the norm. Up until approximately three years ago we would get a burn permit, cost free, from the Forest Service to dispose of any brush that would pose a fire threat on our property. The system worked well. Then, for whatever reason, the County took over the process and now one has to pay the County $50.00 a season to protect our own property. After the horrible disaster in Los Angeles that has negatively impacted so many lives, hopefully positive changes will be made to help rectify the damage that has been done by state and local governments.
Great article Andy! You made a number of excellent points. One thing that should kept in mind, however, is that a twenty lane freeway wouldn’t stop wind blown embers from spreading fire from one community to another. Also, species and environments are worth protecting.
And likely a key cause of the speed and intensity of LA fires
More electric cars, batteries, and other lithium products need to be studied and allow other energy sources like organic oil to be part of our solutions.
Great critique Andy. We are beginning to experience the huge downside of our nation’s desire for peace and our historic tolerance of illogical agendas. The pendulum of this patience has obviously reached its zenith. It is just so sad the recent consequences have had to occur to make us realize it is time to rearrange our National and local priorities. We are fortunate to have a bellwether like yourself with such piercing common sense, to keep pushing back against shallow thinking agendas that mean well; but which are so woefully lacking in long term perspective. Please urge your readers to reverse this downside by voting for common sense at upcoming elections. We need more elected officials with business experience and global perspectives.
Anyone still wondering if the "new LA Times" offers anything new: today's Sunday edition is over-the top in their continuing inflammatory TDS rhetoric. Virtually every article. Reading its pages does disclose where contrary posters get their one-sided Democrat cult fixes. Quite amazing, really.
Amen. This will continue until all of us, stand up and fight. We need to not continue to vote for any and all of these people who do not have the common sense to change all of this. Plus, to pay any of these people any money for their lack of protecting us.
If anything can come out of this for the good, it will be a wake up call to fire everyone in charge and start over with real leadership who have the guts to change all of this.
Want the CA freak show to continue? No problem - just keep voting in the Commie Dems.
I'll tell ya what's needed - a smart, sensible guy like Steve Hilton as Gov and some ass-kicking GOP to undo the crap the Dems have slid in over the years.
Thanks Andy, another great summary of a significant current event in California…it’s appears to be another land grab by the Deep State actors embedded in our once Golden State…
Seems like we should get rid of Proposition 103 which was passed in 1988 with the intent of limit insurers’ ability to adjust rates quickly in response to changing risks.
Having just helped someone bitch and complain about following landscape protocols for fire safety, it will take enforcing a lot of new regulations to reduce the residential impact of fires. Good luck getting entitled Americans to tear out much of their landscaping and trees or allowing their neighbors to do the same.
Andy
Perfectly stated!!!
You hit the nail on the head.

A must listen podcast on this topic is Shawn Ryan show with Tim Sheehy This will confirm what Andy and I are stating.

It is time to expose the Lithium lie.

I thought Soon-Shiong was going to move the paper more to the center. But I haven't seen his promised “bias meter” anywhere yet.
I used to love getting the LA Times on Sunday and spend a few hours with it. It’s incredible how they goofed that up.
I stopped supporting liberal rags/media years ago. No viewers = no ads= no $$$= no rag
We don't have the resources because Biden sent all our money to Ukraine and Israel. Why isn't this mentioned in the article?

Electric fire trucks . . . p u l e e e a s e!
Election integrity is first step
More than anything else we need to turn the nation back into a meritocracy. And reform the education system to support it.
It is always great to have others opinion that support yours.
Good piece.

We don’t need more rules and regulations.
Everyone needs to be responsible for their own actions and decisions. No one bail them out
Thy learn then
