If I come in as an illegal female I get snatched up by an employer for cheap wages and can be abused and worked to death. If I complain and threaten to go to the police I am reminded that I am illegal and can be deported back to where I came from. It is a lose-lose scenario for the person in need. If I come here legally, messy as the current system is, I can state my case and get help and actually find protection. If I’ve got a criminal record I will probably be rejected and that is proper. We make individual choices and those choices have consequences.
