Yep, you are so right Justin! As many of you know, especially in Montecito, I own a 1937 Ford Fire Engine. It loves parades! Knowing Milpas was shut down, I decided to organize the Christmas Parade on 12-20 beginning at 5p. I anticipate 25 entries featuring many “mini” cars. The best places to witness this parade will be on Coast Village Rd and Cabrillo. Let’s bring back Christmas in rolling lights!
Dana, I’ve been in the parade for the past several years and I read that Montecito Association is NOT sponsoring the parade this year and that you are. Fantastic where do I sign up? Dolores
Having helped organize, coordinate, and pay for that Milpas Christmas parade for a few years in the early 2000s, I lament this decision at a personal, even visceral level. And I am suspicious that "the reason" given for the cancelation is far, far from the truth. But it is a useful narrative hook (hating ICE, its mission and its red-tint champions) on which to hang this failure of leadership. There should be some heads hanging in shame, but there are so few heads (or hearts) available....just wagging blue fingers in abundant supply.
Thank you, Justin. This is a terrific piece about what Gad Saad has termed “suicidal empathy.” The Democrats are Grinches and yet, I'm friends with people who empathize with illegals and blame Trump for the parade being cancelled. They're excellent people in many other aspects of their lives, who I like a lot and just avoid trying to explain to them how misplaced their empathy is and how they're being emotionally — and morally — manipulated by the Democratic Party. Trying to reason with them is hopeless. Yuri Bezmenov wrote in his How to Subvert Subversion Substack: “Dr. Gad Saad coined the term suicidal empathy to describe how the parasitic mind virus hijacks good intentions into bad results. It drives every policy destroying Western civilization: mass migration, cashless bail, defund the police, vagrant drug addicts, trans grooming, ESG, DEI, COVID, and censorship. They all stem from prioritizing emotional virtue signaling and ideological conformity over genuine compassion and data-driven outcomes. Suicidal empathy is weaponized naivete. Low-trust sociopaths take advantage of a high-trust society to subvert it from within. Darwin takes care of the rest.”
I loved your commentary! It is exactly what I’ve been telling my wife for the last week. Anything to disrupt the normal and make it appear to be the Republicans and Trump‘s fault.
All I want for Christmas is for Californians to wake up and realize what assholes these people really are and vote them all out of office.
Great article, Justin, and so right on target. As Polly stated in her comment there are a lot of good people who I believe are sincere but extremely naive and easily led who are going along with the
narrative of the left wing but I also believe that a good portion of the leaders in our city and county are not so naive and appear to have a huge financial stake in keeping the flames of hatred going on this issue.
Local reality: these “excellent”, likeable people enabler Polly refers to are caring people; the rest of us are bad, uncaring people lacking compassion. We are to be shamed, silenced, endangered. Too many supporting enforcement of existing laws suffer from fear paralysis and ‘go along to get along’ perpetuating the status quo. These polite, kind, excellent locals enable the status quo to continue. Our public schools teach “kindness” and acceptance, not civics or history.
The Camarillo ICE Office has been called a joke for respecting the desires of South County enablers to live and let live the thousands of good, excellent people inhabiting limited housing, attending District funded public schools, while benefitting from government funded medical care, social services, and first responders.
Official (Democrat) Leadership Explanation: Milpas Holiday Parade | Santa Barbara Eastside
No venom Polly except that which you spew due to your narrow interpretation of the word ‘enabler’. You posted Polly: “I'm friends with people who empathize with illegals and blame Trump for the parade being cancelled. They're excellent people in many other aspects of their lives, who I like a lot and just avoid trying to explain to them how misplaced their empathy is and how they're being emotionally — and morally — manipulated by the Democratic Party.” Your words, not mine. It’s clear you value friendship over country, citizenship and civic duty.
We obviously have different definitions of “excellent people”, and a different take on the responsibility of ‘civic duty’ to inform, discuss, debate.
It’s troubling that a woman with your command of the English language — as observed by your articles and posts — finds it “hopeless” to engage on specific topics, such as illegal entry and residency, with those supporting law breaking at a danger to me and others. Rather you posted here that you choose to enable continuation of the friendship on its status quo basis (by avoidance). You clearly posted your position that is the same as the local majority. No need to become defensive.
Locals need not fear an ICE sweep of the estimated 10,000 undocumented residents here or 10M in CA. The status quo for cheap labor will be maintained, fully supported by locals.
I too am friends with people who empathize with illegals and blame Trump for most everything. Also have daughters that have been captured by the woke mind virus, which was carefully planned and spread throughout the world.
They're excellent people, who I also mostly try to avoid explaining their misplaced empathy.
Tagging us as enablers is just plain wrong. Your all or nothing attitude about political disagreements is what divides US. I like to find commonality & work to change their thinking thru love & care.
Beautifully put, DL. My beloved mom, Margie, was a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat. When she was at Mission Terrace for rehab her roommate, named Barb, wore a MAGA hat (my mom was still trying to forgive me for voting for Trump). The first night those two women fought over the tv news station. The next day I went to the staff and said it might be better if my mom had a new roommate. They laughed and said, maybe you should go in and ask them. Well, over night they'd become buddies, sharing stories of growing up during the Great Depression, World War II, losing husbands, children. They had been laughing and they had been crying. Together. They were friends at the deepest level, their shared love of being Americans together. RIP Margie and Barb.
DLDawson: There’s nothing wrong with “enabling” friendships of those we disagree with. Silence, avoidance are divisive; the traditional choice of polite Americans. I value friendships with Salud, Monique, Gregg and other career politicians; however our interactive relationship is not dependent on silence or topic avoidance. I understand their position; they mine. We can and do discuss areas of disagreement. That’s our individual choice. Your comfort zone may be conflict avoidance; mine is not. Being invited back to dinner a second, third, fourth time is always a good sign. Trump is not to blame; enforcing existing laws is the issue Californians must address.
Friendships, meaningful relationships with our children and family members, are not divisive that facilitate conversation, to discuss, to debate and to seek consensus on public policy matters. Feeling compassion for those seeking a better life is not wrong. Helping others gain legal entry is to be celebrated! “Love and care” works for you; public policy activism and working on legislation works for me.
You know what I don't like about your comment? You've hijacked a terrific column by Justin Shores about the parade and turned it into this Montecito93108 v Polly Frost bs. I'm out of this discussion at this point. I don't need to defend who I am to you or anyone else, when we should be applauding Dana for putting on a parade. You've proved my point about the inanity of letting political differences get in the way of making community better.
Do you actually know the meaning of woke? It’s to have knowledge what you are talking about, it’s being able to hink on your own without Fox News, or the magas spreading their conspiracy theories and lies spread by the president. Kudos to your daughters.
Sorry Polly, but a lot of your opinions don’t show one least little bit of compassion sometimes. When you offer an opinion you gotta take the backlash that comes with it. I should know.
I take plenty of backlash, Julia. I've been a professional writer for years. Disagreements, bad reviews - bring them on. I do not mind disagreements. But I do not like being called personal things that are insults, such as being an enabler. And I don't have to take that from anyone.
Polly cannot take criticism she takes personally - I know from experience. For quite a long time she would mock me or otherwise mention me while also refusing to respond to me.
I am not sure what your intention was in referring to "enabler Polly" and hopefully it was not meant to be insulting. I actually think that there are more people from the opposite side of the aisle that may be rethinking their positions on immigration but the local media and politicians keep stoking the fire in order to keep headlines and money flowing in. It is true that many friendships have been lost due to the political situation in this country but it is also true that there is more to life than politics and I do not want to become restricted by this political division to the point where I cannot like a person simply for their political leaning, an important exception being a person that is monetarily capitalizing on the situation which covers a good portion of the politicians.
A lot of good people that are extremely naïve is an apt description of more than half the Democratic Party I believe. Willfully ignorant also comes to mind as well as lazy and uninformed Most of all I think many are afraid to engage in honest debate because they realize they don’t know the facts and cannot convince anyone that their points are valid
So are you saying Catholics are not Christians? Do you know what being a Christian is? In case you don’t it’s anyone believing in Jesus Christ, ergo, Christian.
Calm down. I'm a Christian but don't practice Catholicism. Some immigrants are Christians such as Presbyterians or non demonstrational without being Catholics.
Of course I know what is to be a Christian.
There's a difference definitely going to a Catholic church vs a Prodestant Church.
I grew up in the Catholic Church and now attend Baptist Church.
Why everything has to be so negative especially if you're a Christian we are kind to others even our enemies.
FYI, I’m always calm especially when dealing with a lot of the contributors here. My point was that anybody can be a Christian if you believe in Jesus Christ and follow his teachings. I didn’t say you have to be a Catholic, Protestant or any specific denomination. Consideration and kindness should be given to everyone.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously said during his first inaugural address in 1933, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself-nameless, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” Truer words have never been spoken.
Today, we see FDR’s party using fear as a commodity. Why? Because fear is being used in order to control. Fear over ICE and mass deportations, fear of white supremacy, fear from climate change, fear from Russia, fear from Israel, fear from Islamophobia, fear from Transphobia….you get the idea. Fear is the entire basis for which the Democratic Party exists.
The liberal agenda simply has NOTHING else to offer the voting public other than fear. We see this being played out daily in the media, which they (the media) are complacent in.
Fear, as a human emotion is a visceral response and much needed for the survival of our species. “Fight or flight” is very real and results in neurotransmitters being secreted by our adrenal glands in order to fend off physical threats (whether real or perceived). Comes in handy when we all were living in caves! Dems know this as an emotional and sometimes, uncontrollable response. Human reasoning and rationality often goes out the window!
Lastly, to borrow a few lyrics from “How the Grinch stole Christmas,” in describing the Dems manipulation of fear I say in response; “you nauseate me,” and “the three words the best describes you is as follows and I quote, stink, stank, stunk!”
Congratulations to all our neighbors in Carpinteria, Santa Maria, Solvang, Lompoc and Goleta that refused to allow fear to ruin their holidays!
Fear is used as a weapon on both sides. Do you remember trumps rallies? Do you remember how he reported on invading immigrant caravans in the thousands coming through the border? Here to take your jobs, to rape white women and murder you, to eat your cats and dogs, etc. These were staples in trump, and republican rallies.
Jules, the difference is what Trump was claiming is all actually true. You know, illegal homies running amok, causing murder and mayhem! Then to top it off, they rip off our social services in the billions.
So are you saying that murder, mayhem, people running amok and cheating social services are not committed by United States citizens? Made me think of January 6 and Brian Walshe. In fact, if you think about it, assassinations, assassination attempts, mass school shootings of children and people, are by white men who are US citizens. trump has been a liar his entire career In private life, and as a politician, it’s been proven over and over. So I offer my sympathies for your severe case of TDS.
Your position that since Americans commit crimes it Ok that those who have broken into our sovereign nation also do so? really? Childish version of "what aboutism". Thanks for the "white men" reference...you completely defined yourself.
Perfect! The Demoncrats once again finger point , bitch and moan and again point the finger at Trump! What a back-stabbing, lifeless, God-less "party" Until we the unconscious party who is well aware of this sick party and their whining deeds stand up we will be forced to deal with the likes of lifeless Joe and the horror of Kamala Harris....puleeze
I truly don’t remember Christmas being canceled during Covid and I believe if someone wanted to sing, they could, but then things could’ve been different in Santa Barbara. I don’t know.
Tale of Two Cities, right in the same county. What you wrote has been badly needed to be said. Thank you, Justin. Excellent observations.
What we got in Santa Barbara was yet again pure drama queen theater for partisan political gain. Unmitigated local TDS affliction was the real Grinch who stole Christmas.
Ginned up by the exact same cast of characters and organizations, amplified by unblinking local media support. Names and organizations, that by now should become very familiar to us. Next time they pull their next "immigration" stunts, greet them with a very loud Bah Humbug.
This was an ongoing conclusion started years back. Certain minority political interests decided the Christmas Parade (the reason for the season) was prejudiced against them. It then became the seasonal "holiday?" parade. When that could not kill it, they changed it to a day time parade that few attended. After serious kickback from the businesses it then went back to being scheduled for evenings. It was successful. People flooded in, bought food and windowed shopped.
Then came the SHUT DOWN STATE ST. that was the latest of the Politically Correct (holiday parade). What should have been the renaissance of downtown with parades was "we don't need any stkin parades. The PC failed to understand human behavior.
Fiesta is a shadow of what it once was because there is a parade miles away from downtown.
Montecito can have a Christmas Parade, Santa Maria can have a Christmas Parade, did someone mention Solvang and Goleta?
Mr. Shores is right, Grinch Stole Christmas and more, like the 4th of July Parade.
It must be sad to live in the politically correct houses.

BravO to Dana’s extraordinary Christmas spirit ❤️.
What does this have to do with Christ?
yawn.
That’s the spirit!
Will you be rolling from coast Village Road in Montecito all the way down Cabrillo Boulevard?

Sizzling good read! Pissed me off 2400 miles away!
Spot on Justin.
But you know I actually think this "cancellation" backfired on them, because I think that they hoped all the other celebrations would be cancelled too.
None are so they look ridiculous,in my opinion.
They can't cancel Christmas as hoped, maybe when Biden was in office.
Churches are still open on Milpas and throughout the county.
Ignore the noise and they probably wanted Christmas cancelled,as they did during Covid but it won't happen.
BTW the main religion of most of theimmigrants in this community is Catholicism/Christianity,as a side note.

Q: Why was the Milpas Christmas Parade cancelled and the SB Fiesta, “Old Spanish Days” was allowed to continue as scheduled?
A: Because the Godless, atheist, woke bastards who run our local government despise Christianity and the celebration of our Lord and Savior.
Absolutely

Yes, those radical anti-ICE ers will even cancel Christmas to protect illegals. Illegals are illegal, per US law, period.
You’re joking, right? I think it would take a lot more to cancel Christmas.
They did it with Covid. We couldn't even sing remember that in SB which was led by Democrat politicians
