I know about Hedwig and her family's life next to the camp from a book I read, "The Seamstresses of Auschwitz." The book is about how Hedwig created a haute couture fashion shoppe with the finest and most brilliant Jewish seamstresses. These women sewed and created fashion for the wives of the men who ran the death camps just steps away from where they worked. It's a fascinating look at the dichotomy of the seamstresses who sewed for the very same people who would have killed them- if it weren't for the beautiful fashion they provided.
Another great movie on the same theme, is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Excellent movie.

very dark. very disturbing.
The question to ask: Why an Oscar nomination? ...
Seriously, when you're living next to a death camp, and you hear the party's clapping seals clap for a film about a death camp ...
Why would you clap?
