Outstanding column, Andy — absolutely spot-on. You’ve once again cut through the political fog and exposed the cynical power grab behind Proposition 50 for what it really is: Gavin Newsom’s latest scheme to cement one-party rule in California.
It’s incredible how the same crowd that decries “threats to democracy” has no problem rigging districts to silence half the state’s voters. The citizens’ commission was one of the few things in Sacramento still protecting fairness, and now Newsom and his enablers want to dismantle it to secure their grip on power.
And speaking of enablers — it’s time the Central Coast finally says enough to Congressman Salud Carbajal. For too long he’s carried water for Newsom, Biden, and Pelosi instead of standing up for the working families, ranchers, and small-business owners he’s supposed to represent. His record is nothing but lockstep party-line votes and press releases.
Let’s make this Salud Carbajal’s last term in office. The Central Coast deserves leadership that answers to the people here — not to San Francisco or D.C.
Thank you again, Andy, for keeping the light on truth and accountability when so much of the media looks the other way.

Thank you, Andy. Besides the Capps family legacy on this ridiculous gerrymandering we have Gavin's preposterous claim to the White House. Ever since I saw that ridiculous photo spread of him and Kimberly Guillefoyle trying desperately to look like Jack and Jackie I've known he'll do anything to get it including turn CA into a gulag where we can't call his bluff (hate speech!) and our vote doesn't matter, so he can prove to his party he should win the nomination. My hunch is Laura Capps is putting on her best lipstick to try to convince Gavin to make her his VP. And as further instance of vote rigging, no one will convince me that Kamala's book is #1 on bestseller lists because people are actually buying it rather than some donor buying the thousands of copies to get that slot for her — then dumping them.
Professional organizations hired by elected bodies to present redrawn district line options are driven by two fundamental principles: (1) protect incumbency; and (2) remember full well who is actually paying them to draw these lines.
A layer of independence from the elected politicians who hire and pay these line drawers, is absolutely essential.
Newsom knows this independence link is what he must sever. Thus his total abomination of Prop 50 - one of the most cynical, sleaziest moves ever from this Nancy Pelosi-created political clone.
California for Californians only. Not California so Newsom can get back at Texas.
From what I've read, the only reason Newsom is trying to do this is to counter the same bad behaviour that Trump asked Governor Abbot to do in Texas. You biblical folks get the 'an eye for an eye' thing, right?

NO ON PROP 50

In Texas, Democrats received about 44% of the vote in the 2024 presidential election but only hold 31.6% of the U.S. House seats.
In California, Democrats garnered 61% of the vote and control 82.7% of the House seats.
Yep, both sides suck. I'm just saying I think Newsome wouldn't have started the redistricting if Trump/Abbot didn't push those in TX out.
Reading Andy's one-sided take without mentioning that both sides do this crap you'd think CA was a total outlier on this.
Nice to see you googling numbers.
