I have read some crackpot comments in this great publication, but the librarian promoting drag queen story hour for kids takes the cake. If someone needs to be convinced that doing so is a horrible, evil thing, then reason is not remotely likely to illuminate their darkness. We are living in a world stumbling in the dark, having no light, having thrown overboard the moral compass, and the salt to preserve the meat from rotting. The moral basis for this nation was the Biblical code of behavior given to Moses and expanded and explained by God in the flesh, Jesus. Rejection of these eternal truths gets us where we are. Add the library to the list of unsafe public institutions.
It is hard to believe any sane person would allow a child to be taken away from his parents and castrated. That this is actually happening and even condoned by elements of our society is utterly disgusting.
The moral basis for this nation was rooted in secularism, promoted by the rationalist and anti traditional/hierarchical ideologies of classical liberalism and the enlightenment. Stop promoting this myth of Americanism which conflated authentic Christian values with secular, and nationalist republicanism.
This country is built on a moral foundation of Mosaic Law and the beatitudes of the Sermon on The Mount. I spent six years in Europe and experienced the drift to atheism that was well in place by of turn of the 19th century. Our constitution is a secular document but it is nothing without a moral code underpinning it. I was relieved to return to America, except for two years in DC. Back in SoCal where many Christian offshoots have germinated, I feel at home. There are a healthy number of churchgoers here in SB. All good.
But the founding fathers by rejecting integralist beliefs, the beliefs that Christian teaching should form the basis of law and be reflected in the rule of government through the separation of Church and state is in opposition to Christian teaching and of course means that there is no objective moral framework for the government to operate under. Those who support the enlightenment woukd argue that reason alone is sufficient to determine what is good, but this flies in the face of historical and contemporary atrocities that occur solely because of an appeal to "reason".
You might argue that the separation of Church and state was to prevent the oppression of others, but ultimately the ends do not justify the means, and appealing to a secular framework and system undermine the very Christian values of those who would seek to uphold morality.
Theookos: the "separation of church and state" was in response to Henry VIII's takeover of the Catholic Church in England and then after as all kings of England were assigned head of the Church of England and could dictate liturgical as well as political mandates. No one in the 1700s would have believed that religion would be almost negated by the end of the 20th century. The unintended consequences of that decision will be difficult to undo.
It doesn't matter if they didn't forsee such a thing happening, by appealing to relativism and rationalism over divinely inspired truths, they undermined Christian beliefs and the authority of the Catholic Church.
Besides, he was a heretic and userper, Christ gave authority through the laying on of hands to his Apostles, who in turn gave authority to their successors the Church Fathers (who were Bishops). Despite his absolute rule he lacked any true spiritual authority.
This is opinion not fact. I have read the Geeks (admittedly in translation) including Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. The Greeks failed to give us Freedom of the Will, the gods were in control. Christianity gave us freedom of the will on which our moral and legal systems are based, unless you are a Marxist or some other brand of materialism and don’t believe there is such a thing as a soul.
Bro, how can you state I'm a Marxist when my Catholic and monarchist identity is in direct opposition to revolutionary ideals. Freedom is about doing what is good, nor whatever we want.
Thanks, Jim, another round of interesting letters. But I'm going to address a letter to the editor that appears in the comments by Pamela Scott.
Pamela, considering how distasteful you find Santa Barbara Current, it's admirable that you nonetheless took the time to come here and complain. Because it's very easy to unsubscribe. Just click on the link “Manage Your Subscription” and unsubscribe. You may still get an email sent to you by Santa Barbara Current, but just hit the delete button on your email or go to your email app's account management and ask that it be blocked.
Now, since you've written about how “People are extremely negative and prejudiced on this website, as well as plain wrong” I'm going to respond, You're right, sone of the commenters here are extremely negative and prejudiced and just plain wrong. Unfortunately, they are overwhelmingly, though not always, Trump-haters. I would love to meet a positive, unprejudiced and correct Trump-hater here. But that has never happened. And when people who feel positively about Trump try to defend him, they turn their hatred on the Trump supporters. Then they start listing reasons to hate Trump that either they made up or the media made up - and if some Trump supporter tries to point out that these are lies about Trump, the Trump hater goes nuclear. Or if they're feeling more peaceful that day, they announce they are too good to respond.
Let me tell you something about Trump hatred. Back in early 2016, I, too, hated Trump. I hated his buildings (I lived in NYC), I hated his hair, I hated his book (without having read it).
Then one day I thought I should stoke my hatred of him and actually watch one of his rallies. And I was moved to tears. I watched a presidential candidate actually relate to the working class of this country. I saw a candidate who hadn't spent his whole life as a politician, but who actually knew how much pain this country was in. And he was the first truly non-racist, egalitarian presidential candidate I'd ever heard.
I became a Trump voter. I don't agree with everything he's for, don't like everything he's done. Guess what? The only “perfect” candidates are the ones the media manufactures the way they're manufacturing Kamala right now.
You need to think about your Trump hatred, Pamela. Why does he so obsess you? What is your hatred really about? And maybe, even if you still don't vote for Trump, you won't hate him. And you know what? I think you'll be a nicer, happier person.
Excellent Polly! well put arguments without denigrating Pamela…good on you for opening your mind to Trump & analyzed facts, rather than continuing along under the spell…while difficult for most, Methinks it’s important to treat those that are asleep with respect — since they too will wake to the mindwar at some point soon (everyone will soon wake as truths about our past’s continue to be revealed, 4-6% will be non-believers & forever lost)…So, Be Best, our families, coworkers, friends, & neighbors will soon need guidance with the Awakening process...
Nice work kid. Thoughtful, measured and judicious - no rant-back. I don't know who this Pamela broad is but she sounds like a real beauty. I really dislike Kamala, but I don't hate her, I just think most of her Commie policies would wind up hurting our beautiful America.
I’d consider Harris more of a ‘co-conspirator’ when it comes to the destruction of my beloved California, but yes, she is a destructive force wherever she goes.
I did not “hate” Trump in 2016, but I certainly did not like him. Trump was my 17th choice in the 2016 primary. California held the primary election in June of 2016 and my choice was between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. I intended to vote for Cruz when I walked into the booth, but when I looked down at my ballot, I heard the voice of William F. Buckley Jr. saying, “I’d be for the most right, viable candidate who could win.” I filled in the bubble for Trump and I’ve been on the Trump train ever since. I became increasingly enthusiastic as I noticed how the corrupt men and women on both sides of the aisle HATED him. I also was impressed that he understood how to get hit and hit back. Here was a man who grew stronger after every sucker punch.
Like you, I don’t support every policy position expressed by Trump, and he continues to cause me embarrassed for him on occasion, like claiming Joe Rogan will be ‘booed’ next time he enters a UFC event. But I also agree 100% with your statement:
“I watched a presidential candidate actually relate to the working class of this country. I saw a candidate who hadn't spent his whole life as a politician, but who actually knew how much pain this country was in. And he was the first truly non-racist, egalitarian presidential candidate I'd ever heard.”
I’ve seen more than my fair share of drag. And I have interacted with the mostly men who perform in drag shows. Drag queens are a form of comedian, and as such, seriously cannot by trusted not to do or say things that would be inappropriate for children. This is why, until the recent ‘woke’ campaign, drag was relegated (rightfully so) to gay bars where their form of sexual innuendo would be appreciated. Once you give these men access to an audience, you have ZERO control over what they do. The fact that many of them are using pseudonyms and not coming forth with their real names should be cause for concern. Do you really want a dude in a dress (disguise) reading to your children. If so, why?
Although it's obvious to right thinking adults that we desperately need Donald Trump and JD Vance to lead our Country out of the pit we have dug, after reading some of the OPEDS it's even more obvious we need GOD. Seriously, a librarian urging people to take their kids to watch men with a mental disorder prancing around in sexually revealing dresses can only be the result of the absence of "Light".
Thank you Santa Barbara Current for offering a sane place to "talk". Blessings
I very much plan on voting and supporting Steve Garvey for US Senate. The way he is running his campaign and lack of any cogent message is disappointing and frustrating . Clearly, Mr. Garvey needs to get out, pound the pavement and give some interviews. Politicians must get voters to identify with them and hear their concerns. The thought of electing Adam Schiff is a nonstarter. Why? Because Schiff knowingly lied to the American people about the fairy tale of “Russian collusion” and as a result has been sanctioned by Congress.
If we expect to turn California into being the Golden State again, we need to start with this Senate seat. Otherwise, expect the ongoing chaos and disaster perpetrated by the Democratic Party.
Garvey is disappointing by not getting out and letting us see him, but Jim Worthen in right - Garvey's celebrity will get him elected. Maybe Garvey's M.O. is the right one . . . lay low so your opponent can't hang you with a boo-boo you might have made along the way.
Has anyone driven in Goleta Old Town lately? The new traffic pattern and parking is nuts and causing much backup. I was hoping for a revival after the lockdowns, but I guess that more "For Lease" signs will be up there soon.
I grew up in Goleta and returned here after decades away. I love this town and it breaks my heart to see how it's treated by Santa Barbara and how Goleta's government treats it. As I said before here, Goleta is not The Good Land, it's The Dumping Land.
Mr. or Mrs. Cabeen, in the last century, I used to enjoy drag shows in France and US, including the French fest in SB where I knew many of the performers; they were classy, talented and happy! But no more- These days drag shows are not happy, not classy, and my toddler actually saw one and can sense that they are creepy.
Good lord, lady, try not to be too naive and credulous. There’s a revolutionary political agenda behind Drag Queen Story Hour. It’s a social-activism campaign, not some sweet entertainment-thing that just organically happened. The campaign is classic Marxist. They want to destroy conventional Western life, and particularly conventional family life.
Ask yourself: Why do the drag queens want to read in front of children? Why aren’t they agitating to read stories to people in nursing homes?
Learn a bit about the history of Drag Queen Story Hour from Wikipedia:
They’re after the children, and they say as much themselves. For example: “The program strives to "capture the imagination and play of gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models". What business is it of schools and libraries — most of them dependent on money from the general public — to promote this?
Fwiw, I’ve enjoyed many drag shows and I spent decades in the arty/intellectual trenches of NYC’s cultural world. I’ve known actual trannies and I revere the talents of some great drag performers. But it’s an adult entertainment form, along the lines of cabaret and burlesque. Why would anyone want to expose children to an extreme form of sexual confusion? Maybe San Franciscans … but, realistically and understandably, most Americans don’t want a San Fran-style radical agenda imposed on them, their communities and their kids.
Another question to ask yourself: Drag Queen Story Hour has only existed since 2015. How oh how did we ever get by before it? (Answer: we did just fine.)
Let’s not stupidly and passively submit to every passing whim and cause the Left tries to sell us. These campaigns — and they are campaigns — aren’t sweet and innocent. There’s always a grim, Utopian agenda behind them.
Keep those drag-fags away from our kids! Children are trying to figure out what the world is all about - they don't need weird shows approved / promoted by adults suggesting gays in funky cross-sex costumes are 'fun'.
A number of readers have written great comments on the drag queen shows so I will keep mine very short. At one time I would not have been as suspect about taking my kids to the library to see one but I find the coincidence of the Woke movement and our public libraries pushing their agenda so hard that I would not think of it in my wildest dreams anymore.
A p.s. on my last comment about drag shows. I have been watching the old 1976 I,Claudius series (excellent) where one scene shows the emperor Caligula doing his rendition of a drag show queen. One can only wonder why the library feels it so important to promote this.
Suggest you go home and hug your emotional support animal. Yes, time to put on your big girl pants and accept the fact that not everyone views the world as you do. BTW, does your employer know what a narrow minded, antisocial, ignoramus you come across as? Or are you even employable?
Jeff Barton's link to the City Journal article was eye-opening for me. I hadn't really considered the political and financial backing that the Drag Queen Story Hour is receiving to fund these performances. I find the idea repulsive, and would prefer my tax dollars go toward the lovely program that has service dogs being brought into libraries for timid and hesitant children to read out loud to an uncritical and appreciative fur companion audience. That makes sense to me. Encourage the kids to read. That is the point of libraries, after all.
Drag queen story is not overtly inappropriate. There is no fondling of children or nudity. But as an adult you should appreciate that children are being taught that gender is fluid and a matter of choice. This is taught in the classroom and normalized at drag queen story hour. It is the subject of much of the reading material. According to Wikipedia it is for children aged 3 - 11. The malleability of a child's mind was appreciated by Aristotle; give me the child to age 7 and I will give you the man. Propaganda is what is used to persuade adults to think or behave in a certain way. It is called brainwashing when the subjects are children age 3 - 11 with undeveloped minds, minds that have not considered their gender or sexuality in any substantive way. Drag queen story story hour is far from benign but a Trojan horse set on the destruction of our most fundamental norms.
“Dems in Ecstasy?” Seriously? Shouldn’t the Editorial be “Dems on Ecstasy?” That’s right, when one considers the situation we find ourself in, how can anyone be celebrating? Take your pick, the economy, foreign policy, immigration, war about to erupt in the Middle East, all key issues for voters.
Yet, we have put forth a DEI candidate, Kamala Harris as President to replace the obviously impaired, Joe Biden.
She just made the cover of Time as “Her Moment.” That’s right, it’s not about policy or record it’s about WHO she is and the associated optics. No interviews, no press conference, no debate, no platform, it’s just about having a liberal black woman as President that makes people feel better about themselves, despite not accomplishing anything!
We are in a truly dysfunctional place in history and our enemies are taking notice.
As for her running mate Tim Walz, talk about Ecstasy. Yes, Walz lied on military service, sat by while his city burned, changed his state flag to resemble the Somali flag and has much explaining to do about his ties to the Chinese Communist Party. I just heard Mark Savage claim Walz is the new Manchurian Candidate!
Great, what can possibly go wrong? All this while the Press in this country is playing along as useful idiots and not asking the tough questions!
How truly disgraceful. Hold onto your wallet because the biggest con job in history is about to take place.
There was a really cool article in the WSJ yesterday. It said DEI doesn’t bring disadvantaged people up. It dilutes the value of striving to learn more, try harder, and get better by including even the losers. Now that makes sense to me!
Jim Worthen really has it right with his ‘Celebrity Appeal’ comment. People are so damn stupid and lazy. They don’t know anything about the candidates and don’t take a minute to see what their policies stand for - they just see a name they recognize, check the box and walk away a kingmaker.

Yes, it’s truly disgusting that grown adults project their sexuality on children. Equally disgusting is those that enable this aberrant behavior.
That's fer damnn sure!

LOL way too extreme there fella! Marxist?!?! Ummm, if he doesn’t fit your agenda he’s a Marxist. I see lol
