I recall a government study back about 30 years ago, focussed on the high percentage of obesity within the Hispanic population, including children. The study traced families back to their home villages and regions in Mexico, discovering that the inhabitants there -- famly members of the immigrants to the US -- were healthy. No obesity, no diabetes. Their diet consisted of local foods: fresh produce, meats, fish, grains. All home prepared dishes. Literally, our American diet was killing the Hispanic population. The same can be said for the inner cities, chiefly populated by minorities. Areas of "food deserts" where fresh, healthful foods are inaccessible. Instead of kneejerk reactions to responsible SNAP reforms, proponents of the poor ought better to focus on working with the government to solve the serious nutrition deficiency among America's poor.
You cannot hate Democrats enough cynically abusing our judicial system to gain what they were not able to obtain in an election .Stop being election-deniers, Democrats.
SNAP is a nutritional program; not a free for all. Basic food stuffs for adequate daily nutrition, processed no more than one of two steps beyond the original source. SNAP is for basic nutrition only; taxpayers do not fund personal life-style demands. College Biochemistry of Nutrition professor declared the most basic food stuffs for adequate nutrient coverage were provided by just potatoes and milk. Bring on the vichyssoise or potato chowder. Add today's very nice tinned sardines and you have a nutritional power house.
What the heck is "hunger insecurity" anyway and when did that term creep into the vocabulary? Does it mean mommy is on crack, so I don't know where my next meal is coming from? Does it mean I don't know how to cook even the most basic meals for myself? Even if I have only access to a plug-in crockpot.
Does it mean I just blew the last of my public food benefits trading them for drugs in the local 7-11 parking lot, and have no money left for real food? Does it mean what a local activist wag once complained, just try making your food stamps last a full month when you spend it on prepared food at Trader Joes?
Meals on Wheels delivers daily nutrition for approximately $9 a day. $9 x 30 days. Under $300 month. Get a part time job in the food service industry and daily meals are often included as part of the hourly wages. Two free meals provided all K-12 students year round. Summers included.
What exactly is "food insecurity" in this country?
SNAP, like so many other federal programs was established with the best of intentions and like so many other government programs, is rife with corruption, inefficiency and fraud. NGO’s which pay no taxes, have used SNAP as a personal piggy bank and money laundering scheme, disguised as a humanitarian project in order to bilk taxpayers from billions of dollars. As with holding any federal welfare program accountable, the left automatically cries discrimination and racism.
All while obesity, diabetes, heart disease, morbidity and mortality have had devastating effects on minority communities.
The research is clear, consumption of large amounts of carbohydrates can cause inflammation leading to increased A1C and results in accelerated disease processes. Diversity, inclusion and equality have NOTHING to do with people making pigs out of themselves and lacking any self control.
Why should people’s bad dietary choices led to astronomical healthcare costs that all of us must pay? I’m sorry to break the news, but there does seem to be a correlation between BMI and IQ.
What? Make the statement that refined foods that are metabolized quickly (aka sugar) and put a burden on the endocrine system leading to diabetic syndrome should not be paid for by taxpayers? Make the statement that welfare money should not go for paying pet food? Why how dare they!
NGO's using taxpayer and hiding what would be for any other group taxable income to support for profit making. Hummmm.
It isn't just just SNAP using taxpayer money to line their pockets.
It is syndrome clearly twisted and now used to support political action groups because they are for the people??? Really???
Look to Sacramento. See how taxes go up, more handouts for groups that support the elections of those who make sure the NGO's get money and then (surprise surprise) get more money. Think it is just Sac? How much money is funneled through City Councils and Boards of Supervisors? (ssshhh, we just hired a firm to "analyze" a project that will then get more NGO money that then winds up influencing elections)
Isn't this crazy. They protest MAHA even if it's about getting healthy. If not having access to those foods would lower diabetes and they still don't support it.
They don't want anyone from this administration to be successful.
I watched some of the Congressional Hearing on this same subject. It was very interesting. The professional representing nutrition was being grilled and insisted that by making these changes to SNAP,it would cause hunger yet the Senator kept asking is Coca Cola an essential food ams will someone go hungry without it.
She refuses to answer and kept changing the subject.
They aren't taking essential foods they are taking away junk food. They don't even allow many of those foods in schools,at least In California.
When are the American people gonna wake up and see the scam that is being pulled off between the Democrats, the NGO’s and nonprofits? I see the problem highlighted here on the current, on Fox News and many other news outlets online. I know why legacy media doesn’t pick up and run with this story, (because they’re in the tank for the Democrats come hell or high water.). What I don’t understand is why more than 1/2 of the voting population of America refuse to look at or even think about the ramifications of this. Of course it would be for their benefit if they ever increasing cost of taxes were lesser. Is it purely ideological or are they too lazy to spend the time thinking about what’s good and what’s bad for this country? I would say it’s because they’re too busy being purposely distracted by all the CRAP that is being electronically teleported to them every minute of every day by people that want them distracted by things that actually matter.
I am not surprised that the Democrats want to obstruct any action by the Trump administration, it is politics as usual. I am VERY disappointed in RFK Jr. While restricting SNAP benefits from covering certain foods and taking on big food dye might have some marginal benefit these actions merely distract from the biggest cause of chronic health problems in America. RFK Jr understands and has written extensively on the threats posed by vaccination, the childhood vaccination schedule, liability protection for vaccine manufacturers via the 1986 childhood vaccination act and liability protection provided by the PREP act. In his book The Real Anthony Fauci, RFK Jr makes a convincing case supported by extensive reference that vaccines are unsafe, the cause of most chronic illness, inadequately tested and yet in many cases shielded from liability. Perhaps cowed by the power of big pharma, RFK Jr has been ineffective in changing the childhood vaccination schedule, has not repealed the PREP act, and has not initiated any comprehensive study of vaxed vs unvaxed comparing all cause morbidity and mortality. Extensive data bases exist within the Medicare system and within large providers such as Kaiser which could be used to compare the health outcomes of vaxed vs unvaxed. Dr Zervos at Henry Ford health in Michigan did such a study (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jKsxUOg4IJE) and found the unvaccinated were substantially healthier in all categories. What did Zervos do? He refused to publish knowing that he would lose his license to practice. I expected better from RFK Jr who understands the threats posed by vaccination but has nevertheless chosen to take on big sugar rather than big pharma.
JUST DAYS AFTER SCIENTISTS FOUND THAT BEE VENOM CAN KILL CANCER CELLS, THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS SET TO CLOSE THE NATION'S PRIMARY BEE RESEARCH LABORATORY. MAHA?
Trump ordered the USDA to close the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) in Maryland, which houses the nation's oldest and most prominent bee research laboratory, and almost no one blinked an eye.
THIS MATTERS.
First, this is just one of the cuts to agricultural research funding he’s made, which, together, cost us $32 million. That’s like six Trump weekend golf vacations. If he wants to save money, he can start by cutting those.
Second, scientists JUST found that bee venom can kill cancer cells. MAGA loves to say we wouldn’t be able to say something nice about the current president “even if he cured cancer.” Well, now we’ll never know. Because, yet again, he cut funding for it.
And finally, the part everyone’s ignoring: he’s only president for 2.5 more years. In 2.5 years, someone who ACTUALLY loves America will win office and inherit a repair job. The brilliant people he fired will all have found new jobs, and we’ll have to find people to replace them.
The damage he’s doing will take a LONG time to undo.
Bee venom has shown lab promise against cancer cells for years—not a fresh "just days" breakthrough Trump is killing.
USDA is reorganizing/closing the aging Beltsville Bee Lab amid ~$5B proposed USDA cuts targeting bureaucracy and low-priority spending—not a unique hit on miracle cancer research.
Hyperbolic "cure blocked" and "irreparable damage" claims are partisan spin. Research continues at universities/private labs; budgets get adjusted by Congress. Bee health is real, but this isn't sabotaging a cure. Get help.
Once again a subordinate District judge acts in an incorrect manner, above their pay grade.
A District judge has authority only in their district. Their self image may be puffed up so they are co-equal with SCOTUS, but they are mistaken.
We need SCOTUS to act correctly, and not allow unelected district judges to issue nationwide injunctions. If the District court does so, then that finding ought to be immediately cancelled by SCOTUS.
Most of the UN SDG goals revolve around managing poor people. This effort to exclude certain foods smacks of globalization and government control over individual autonomy.
Take a few minutes to read this cover story from NYT Magazine from 2011 Is Sugar Toxic?
...But some researchers will make the case, as Cantley and Thompson do, that if something other than just being fatter is causing insulin resistance to begin with, that’s quite likely the dietary cause of many cancers. If it’s sugar that causes insulin resistance, they say, then the conclusion is hard to avoid that sugar causes cancer — some cancers, at least — radical as this may seem and despite the fact that this suggestion has rarely if ever been voiced before publicly. For just this reason, neither of these men will eat sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, if they can avoid it.
“I have eliminated refined sugar from my diet and eat as little as I possibly can,” Thompson told me, “because I believe ultimately it’s something I can do to decrease my risk of cancer.” Cantley put it this way: “Sugar scares me.”
And on a further note...So RFK comes into town, torches research and disease prevention programs, and now we have outbreaks of measles, screwworm, and cyclospora. It’s almost as if doctors should be in charge of health services. MAHA...please but with someone who actually knows something.
