Thank you, Stephen, excellent analysis and clear. No on Prop 2! But it's not just schools. It is absolutely outrageous how the build, build, build mandate is being used on every level in California and only benefits unions and developers and corrupt politicians.
We have to stop this “progressive” bullying. Take a look at The Independent https://www.independent.com/2024/08/27/more-housing-is-practical-not-problematic/. This opinion piece sums up the destruction of our state - and of Santa Barbara - by Democrats browbeating citizens with bogus horrors if 15-minute cities aren't built now!
What really galls me is the owner of The Independent, Marianne Partridge, lives on her vast ranch while morally lecturing the rest of us about how we need to start packing in high rises, enlarge our freeways and allow our beloved single family neighborhoods to be turned into ugly jungles of shabbily built constructed pack-'em-in apartments. Okay, Marianne, you first: take 10,000 of your acres and make a 15-minute city.
And of course we need to build more schools! And indoctrinate more children into the joys of living like placid trans insects!
How anyone can vote Democrat ever again in this state is beyond me. Everyone with TDS who harangues voters against putting the evil Trump in the White House, is so far gone mentally that it isn't possible to reason with them. I just sit back and try to remind myself how important freedom of speech is to Democracy - the real kind of democracy, not the bs kind the Dems blathered on about at the convention. But you Democrats who still can think: you owe it to future generations to vote out the elite members of the Democrat Rubber Room.
Good comment on The Independent. I do not know Marianne Partridge other than her relationship to the Poet family and her owning a lot of acreage in the County. I can picture the scenario of the huge landowner and also owner of the town's newspaper as a script from an old western movie. It's kind of like the "do as I say, not as I do" adage of the mouthpieces of today journalists and politicians. I think a lot of these people that envision a utopia with the 15 minute city would prefer robots as inhabitants instead of human beings Maybe plastic flowers and trees would fit right in. Someone mentioned plastic cows who only emitted plastic farts so the climate would not be hurt. Welcome to the future of Santa Barbara.
I would love watching your Western! Marianne worked, I believe, at The Village Voice in NYC to learn the magazine and newspaper biz. She ran a perfectly good local newspaper until 2016, even with her Democrat partisanship, because she was completely within the bounds of what all newspapers did. And then The Indy became increasingly Leftist progressive. The Independent is a joke now and it's embarrassing that she pushes her daughter as an influencer with a Central Coast ranch legacy. My ancestors also had a land grant back here in the mid 19th century, but they weren't as good at keeping it. They didn't exactly hob nob with the elites. They were related by marriage to Frank and Jesse James and hid them out when they were on the lam. By 1900 the land was pretty much gone. Good for the Poet/Partridge family for holding on, but then they shouldn't advocate that everyone else - like middle-class taxpayers - happily give up their single family homes so crap can be built that they don't want on their own bit of Eden.
Yes, Polly, it is nice that we still have some vast stretches of land that are not made into tract homes or condos. Years ago I was opposed to a no growth policy but things are a bit different. We have built on just about every scrap of land available and now we want to go up, up, up. p.s. Interesting side note about Frank, Jesse, and your family. I can see where you get your spunk from!
Yes, I love a good western as well, John Wayne, Gary Cooper et al. Great westerns always were between right and wrong, good and evil. Some of the great actors living here in SB; Robert Mitchum , Stuart Whitman, Fess Parker, Kirk Douglas, Leo Carrillo comes to mind.
Having grown up locally, I appreciate the local ranching communities, their rich history and culture. I knew many of the kids from local ranches. Hard work was a virtue.
I have no idea whatsoever about this Partridge woman, but it seems common for Trust Funders to have lefty views while living off their pioneering ancestors hard work. Patti Hearst is another example of turning radical left which was totally opposite from the Hearst family. It seems to be a bizarre case of Stockholm syndrome, whereby, wealthy white women identifying with and supporting liberal causes, despite conservative upbringing.
Wonder if they own cats?
As for Ms. Partridge’s “newspaper,” yes, it is a lefty lunatic rag which is obviously bias and a local joke. Never to give a conservative point of view, no matter what.
Well, at least the Independent hasn’t failed, as the ultra-righty lunatic rag, the Santa Barbara News-Press did, stiffing its creditors and what few employees the had left.
Wow, sorry to see you’re still butt-hurt over the NP’s conservative editorial page. Hey, I’m no fan of McCaw either, but at least the NP was a REAL newspaper. What do McCaw and Partridge have in common? IDK, lots of inherited money and cats?

I did not know that he worked at the DA's Office and he did not tell his friends. I only recently
learned about his work with Snedden & Jackson Prosecution Team. I have now have talked to him three times for over 6 Hours & I believe what he has told me about the concealment of
Evidence in the Jackson Case as well as others which I also have my own evidence of. Michael Jackson's Prosecution by Snedden is one of the most studied legal cases in not just the US but believe it or not Russia & Europe where Jackson has a HUGE following. How do I know this because I go the Michaels Ranch up in Solvang & take photos of the entrance & send them back to Russia & Ukraine, when I am in town. Now let's bring this full circle who believed Jackson? TRUMP Who wanted Jackson to

Off topic but related, does anyone know why there is SO MOCH ROADWORK lately? I have never seen so many construction zones. The money surely tells the story and I want to hear it.
State and Federal $$ is driving the roadwork. Probably some of it being provided by complying with the "Vision Zero" bullshit. When Lahaina burned to the ground, I did some sleuthing, and found their Vision Zero plan. Go here: https://mauimpo.org/vision-zero-maui Click on Action Plan, then Click to Download it. It's a very long, very detailed, very FANCY document with lots of pretty colors, but those of you living in either SB or Goleta will recognize a LOT of it. Then go to the Vision Zero website https://visionzeronetwork.org/ then click on About/Our Team. Read about these people and you will know EXACTLY what is going on. It's an NGO with International reach. This traffic crap is happening EVERYWHERE. As far as I can tell, it's an NWO thing.
Vision zero is typical Democrat bullshit. Imagine a utopian goal such as elimination of all traffic fatalities. Or in their own words: Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. if you oppose it, you are clearly pro traffic fatality. Clearly, we need government funding to achieve the goal. The goal can never be achieved, and the program can never be eliminated.
Not only Inflation Reduction also Roadway Reduction. To make vehicle travel more difficult so you will make different transportation choices. Thanks we appreciate your help.
So many of our roads are in terrible shape, even ones that have been recently redone. The alternative of leaving them alone is even worse. Happy to see at least some of our tax dollars are finally getting spent on hardscape for community benefit.
Which does not mean this is no a total nuisance, agree. But done is better than left undone. Better option to mandate a fixed amount every year for these routine capital improvements, and stay ahead of maintenance costs rather than use the occasional windfalls to play catch up to do what should be getting done all along.
These are all election issues. .Where are voter priorities when they choose candidates to run our local municipal operations. Potholes still matter, as much as more perks for municipal employees. Or the latest social engineering patina, and "climate change" hardening.
Our leaders would never really want to repair the infrastructure to the satisfaction of the electorate. It remains a perpetual campaign issue garnering wide support, for who does not favor a sound infrastructure? A proven perpetual way to get more money to waste.
What do you have against multiple generational families? They're traditional and were common throughout Christian societies historically. The "nuclear family" as far as I'm concerned is merely an extension of individualism which of course cares little for the wellbeing of a community.
What are you talking about? How could you come up with this from what I wrote. You are once again accusing me of stuff so far removed from what I think. My problem with The Indy is it is *against* multigenerational families. I have friends who are very elderly who are struggling under the new Leftist CA regime to leave their Santa Barbara property to their children. Some of these are people inherited what they want to pass along. Others made it themselves. It's a waste of my time to have to defend myself against your insulting and false accusations of what I believe. Please stop treating me as antagonist.
Off topic: Look at Cloward-Piven strategy... it sure seems they have a Prop13 workaround by over-burdening EVERYTHING until long standing deed holders sell at current tax assessment.
You expressly mentioned this "enlarge our freeways and allow our beloved single family neighborhoods to be turned into ugly jungles of shabbily built constructed pack-'em-in apartments." So yes it seems you take an issue with multi generational housing, because you imply it must somehow be ugly be default and is unsustainable as it would only create dense, and unfavorable living conditions.
I understand your concerns for sustainable and housing, and I agree that people should be able to hand off their own property to their children/grandchildren. But I explicity refer to housing units that would allow for multiple family units (extended/multigenerational to live together as a community). Ironically, opposing such housing developments is more expensive in some instances as having families live separately on different incomes (rather than sharing the same resource and salaries under the same roof) could mean that said families lose more of their income due to the separate living arrangements. Supporting sustainable and attractive urban expansion preserves both the integrity of communities and ensures a commitment to fair housing.
I don't think you understand what is meant by single family housing. The Milpas neighborhoods are zoned for single family homes that Newsom wants to eradicate. Single family means it isn't an apartment complex and does not refer to multigenerational inhabitants and owners. That extended family neighborhood is what the Democrats want to get rid of. I think strength in a community is exactly in these neighborhoods where multi generations of families live together, support each other.
My wife and I are supporting a 17-year-old exchange student who had to leave his family to avoid being forced to enlist in an unjust military at 18. It’s a country that’s unfortunately being destroyed by a violent, murderous militia government inflicting religious and personal persecution.
This school year, his Midwestern US private tuition includes dormitory housing, 3 healthy meals a day, full-time 10th grade courses specializing in pre-engineering, field trip transportation, emotional counseling, spiritual and social activities, books/supplies, and healthcare copays. He's also provided with part-time on-campus employment for personal spending money.
There are no student cell phones on campus.
The total cost? $11,000 per year.
Clearly, California has failed its children and the taxpayers
Hello Wally, I think you maybe referring to Ukraine and the 17 yr old Ukraine exchange student from same. What the Press will not tell you is that alot of Ukraine Men have fled across the
borders to avoid being physically and forcefully "Conscripted" where the odds of death at the frontlines is around 50% now. Also alot of Ukraine men have literally gone under-ground to hide. Good for you in your sponsorship to save a life.
Each of us can do something, Howard, if only for one person in our community or from another country.
Athough Ukraine‘s circumstances are tragically similar, our student — who calls me “Daddy Wally” — is from another “dark country.”
Of course your point is valid and many, many, many young people around the world suffer along with their families.
This reminds us of “The Starfish Story,” which bears repeating:
An old man is walking on a beach and notices a boy running back and forth in the sand, picking up starfish and throwing them into the ocean.
The man asks the boy what he's doing, and the boy replies, "I'm saving these starfish, Sir". The boy explains that the starfish will die if he doesn't throw them back into the water because the sun is up and the tide is going out.
The man laughs and says, "Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?"
The boy picks up another starfish, tosses it into the water, and says, "I made a difference to that one!"
Wally, I just did a simple search and the numbers I got for an "average" "k-12" 'boarding school in the midwest" and the number was $45K. I think you found a gem.
"The California legislature has put a $20-billion bond on the November ballot (Prop 2)." The California Legislature is simply a group of people that you, and I, employ. If you disagree with the acts of your employees, discharge them, of in other words, "unelected" them.
Easy example: compare and contrast the faculty automobiles at a public school, then visit a charter school. And last, visit the district admin building parking lot.
I own an inherited home in Lawndale (Waters dist 🤢) next to Environmental Charter High School: school is at capacity, merit-based, and have brought up all property values by demand.
Here I own near Peabody Charter Elememtary, I see the same demand.
Thanks goes to Mr. Frank for this informative article. It should be obvious to all that our California schools, as an aggregate are failing. How ironic, given California schools were once the vanguard for public education. Also obvious is that the Teachers Union are out for themselves, first and foremost. The question taxpayers should have is; do we continue to throw money at a lost cause or do we pull the plug on this Ponzi scheme?
It is no surprise why parents are pulling their kids out of schools. This, due to violence, bullying, drugs, lack of parental guidance, CRT and other questionable curriculum which stokes racial hatred, glorifies homosexuality and transgenderism while denigrates American exceptionalism and Judeo-Christian values.
Once again, it would seem public sector unions are at the core of the problem. Is it any wonder that an unhinged sociopath such as AFT President, Randi Weingarten is such a loud, obnoxious mouthpiece for Teachers Unions?
If I had school aged children, I too would pull my child and enroll them in private, virtual or religious education. I worry that voters knowing how bad our schools are, will vote for it anyway. Yes, just like many will also vote for Harris knowing full well, she is a walking disaster. This is the liberal, progressive creed, vote in lock step with their failing, radical, theology no matter what the outcome is for the rest of society.
Undoubtedly, our adversaries such as Iran, China, Russia, N. Korea, are watching with disbelief on how STUPID we have become. Yes, Paul Harvey was right all along.
I realized that things like racism, sexism etc are truly meant for democratic voters who actually do discriminate on the basis on color, race, gender etc. This goes with their party's agenda and most of them do not question anything their party tells them. They vote for and cheer the candidate lined up by their party regardless of the candidate's competency or qualifications.
The rest of us are simply caught in this propaganda machine by virtue of living in this State but it is not for us. This also means that the Governor of CA and his administration does not represent me or my children. I will be voting "No" on Prop 2.
Excellent summary on why not to send more money to Sacramento, to supposedly fix public education. The real answer is to take the money being wasted on public education and give it to the parents, who can use it for charter schools, private schools or helping them do home schooling. School choice is Kryptonite to the public school/ teachers union monster. More money to the current system of public education meets Einstein’s definition of insanity.
All governmental entities, including schools, care not about belt tightening. They and their consultants concoct the best strategies to wring money out of the citizens.
They are no longer educating the students they are confusing and indoctrinating them.
The proof is in the test scores and emotional damage they have caused.
My advice to everyone is Homeschooling. There are many groups to make it possible.
Thank you Mr. Frank for the detail on schools today. I'm a bit confused by the way you have the money distributed for the school bond though. You make it sound like "Wall Street bond buyers" walk away with 50% of the bond money - which is not how I thought it works. I thought they put up most of the money and were paid back with interest over the life of the bond - while the community that passed the bond paid back the 'loan'. Am I missing something?
For our fellow posters who drop in from time to time, still afflicted with terminal TDS - there is cure - Try Independence. Ask your doctor if it is right for you. (Brought to us by Team RFKJr)
Fire your relationship with the California Teachers Assn, keep that dues money for yourself, create a small local independent bargaining group that sticks only to local school matters, and does not fund these national marketing and lobbying campaigns. Take back local autonomy over the per diem student funding you get from the state under Prop 98 - that does not change.
But you get yourself out of the Sacramento education industrial complex skimming operations. Run the numbers, see if this works better for you. Then campaign for change. How can you untether yourself from the punitive California Education Code? (And live to tell about it.)
At nearly $750,000 per 30 student classroom coming to you annually per Prop 98, how would you best spend this same money locally without the layers confounding this issue in Sacramento?
For the $800 billion we spend nationally on public education every year, what sort of work product should we expect; what sort of work products are we getting. Is it any wonder AFT and NEA are shadow governments in this nation's political process.
Steve writes "...Since just a little over 5% of California workers belong to private sector unions, that means 95% pay for the projects that only 5% are allowed to work." The percentages cited by the author are disturbing, if true! Why so few union workers? The math also appears to be skewed: the "5%" also pay taxes, so it is actually 100% pay for the projects that only 5% are allowed to work. So, why don't some of the 95% just join a union so they can jump onto the "gravy train"? Joining a union is a worker's right, so the question is why are not more workers in unions? Is it employer threats and intimidation? Just wondering. And don't forget to vote YES on proposition 33 to protect working renters from the greedy corporations that are buying up single family homes, condos, and apartments in an effort to turn California into a state of rent-paying wage slaves, 95% of whom are apparently not protected by a union contract.
Thank you, Stephen, for the reminder to look into Proposition 33. I just did and I will definitely vote NO on it and encourage everyone else to vote NO. It is just another example of government overreach in the guise of looking out for the little guy. I have great sympathy for people who pay huge amounts of money on rent in Santa Barbara but I do not think that rent control is going to remedy the cause of the inflation that is incurring in our country. If I wasn't born in this town and wanted to move here, there is no way that I could afford to and would certainly have to look elsewhere for a place to hang my hat. Although I am grateful that I, at least for now, can continue to live here ,I am also a realist knowing if you cannot afford certain things, you have to look elsewhere and not expect the government to pay your way.
Hear, here!! We know they write props to be in disguise of the actual facts, and the last unpopular Prop took awhile to find votes (ballot printers go brrrrrrrrrr) to proceed.
The proposition process is supposed to be a balance against statist legislators that rely on bail outs, but we are finding it impossible to vote out the commie in Commiefornia: they just legislated themselves exempt from the laws they write 🫤
Thank you, Stephen, excellent analysis and clear. No on Prop 2! But it's not just schools. It is absolutely outrageous how the build, build, build mandate is being used on every level in California and only benefits unions and developers and corrupt politicians.

with the SB and CA broken School System.
Several decades ago SB overbuilt new schools which they had to find another use for. You'd think they'd learn, but perhaps they only find improved ways to disguise their corruption.

I hate the way they write.
Andy Caldwell do you have any insight?
Biden's "Inflation Reduction" funds now on the table locally? Salud's investments in our local area, giving us back some of our own tax dollars.
Not only Inflation Reduction also Roadway Reduction. To make vehicle travel more difficult so you will make different transportation choices. Thanks we appreciate your help.
I'd be interested too.
“ $600,000 for a classroom of 25”
In SB there are over 30 kids per class in elementary school classes.
And teachers are still underpaid.
The average teacher gets paid, $75,000? Plus benefits.
Where is the rest of the money going?
Teachers still need to buy supplies out of their own pocket for the class.
Our government has proven to be irresponsible with money.
SB City is millions in the hole. Newsom admits to not knowing where $24 Billion in funds ear marked for homeless went.
CA went from a 25 Billion surplus to a $75 Billion deficit in a 12 month period.
Where did $100 Billion go?
Wreckless with no regard.
How does 24 billion dollars get ‘Lost’? And no one in control is looking into this or curious?
If I or you lost 24 billion or for that matter 1000$ you and I would be in jail
How do we hold them accountably for the blatant theft of tax payer money
Come on he admits it he should b in prison
Much money is wasted in administrative bloat. Over 50%. No real business could survive 50% overhead costs.
Hell NO on Prop 2.
Thank you for this important information.

Proposal to local school districts:
Yes thank you for this informative article 🌸
Spend spend spend! Surely it’ll work this time!
Thank you Mr. Frank, for a great article on the absolute mess that our schools are in. A definite NO on Prop 2!
