Well, here we go again. Blame it on the oil rigs. Honestly, natural seepage of oil has been going on for ages. Why there is more now? Well, UCSB researched it years ago and said it’s because of all the oil that is in the ground. If we extracted more of the oil with oil rigs, we wouldn’t have as much Savage. But of course that’s against the liberals as they feel we should not be pumping oil at all.

Up here north of Santa Barbara, we have a coastal community called "Pismo Beach". "Pismo"... the Chumash term for the very tar you're referring to, and a sealant for their water craft.
And if you don't want to see it on the beach, as you brilliantly point out, you suck it out of the earth and put it to good use, Chumash style. Problem solved. But that's too much common sense for some to handle. John

We can waste a lot of money on studies of naturally occurring variations in natural phenomena. This is likely one and even if millions of dollars are spent there is likely no permanent solution so what’s the point? We have homeless people walking and dying on the streets, living on bus stop benches etc etc. let’s get them to a place they can be cared for away from the most expensive real estate on the planet, now there is a course most can sign up to.
The volume of oil that went into the ocean from the Refugio Oil spill is occurring right now naturally ever 3 days, yet no response. You can bet if this was the oil companies, everyone from Capps to Carbajal would be running their mouths all over every news source and calling for a state and federal emergency response. But a seepage increase that they politically contributed to, not a peep. We have an absolute lack of real leadership here.
When a kid Mom would take a small bottle of gasoline to clean the tar off our feet and lower legs. Why? Simple the natural oil seeps put globs of tar and smaller oil on the sand.
No one thought about it. It was just there.
As a local....what will the anti oil crowd do now it is coming back since they are shutting do the rigs?

I posted a similar statement on Facebook last week and amazingly someone who claimed to be a representative of the Chumash community (he had a fancy title and claimed to be with Chumash Cultural Resource Preservation CCRP) rudely responded that I did not know what I was talking about, calling me a "smart guy" derogatorially. I doubt that he was a legitimate representative, but I didn't want him "polluting" my space so deleted and blocked him.
At any rate, yes, the source(s) need to be identified and dealt with. The GOO's of Santa Barbara may have to swallow some pride and allow a commercial solution to this problem. Oh my!
Where is the EDC’s outspoken mouthpiece, Linda Krop jumping up and down and bloviating about this natural disaster? You would think she would be threatening to sue everyone from Sable Oil, the Trump Administration and anyone with a (R) behind their name?
Yes, the usual suspects from the Sierra Club, EDC, Channel Keeper, Surf Rider and the SB Land Trust have been radio silent over something that has been occurring since the beginning of time. It would seem the only time we hear from these “warriors” is when they are fundraising or taking on big oil. Hey, maybe the UCSB Department of Environmental Radical Studies can determine once and for all the benefits of drilling in relieving natural seepage?

Our local media is totally controlled by progressives. It’s up to each of us to actively message to support Bob Smith however we can: volunteer, text friends, send a check, host a meet & greet. Interesting that the instantly printed signs closing Butterfly Beach also contained the statement this oil contamination was from "natural seeps". Much like the immediate Malibu fire statements claimed the fire was caused by "climate change".
Much like we are now learning our US Parks System and the Smithsonian Institution signage has also been exploited as a deep state propaganda vehicle. Why do we have to keep living like this? Skeptical of every single word our now highly biased, taxpayer-funded, unelected fourth branch of government bureaucrats now puts out.
I would like to also know if any increase in "natural seeps" has ever been linked to pre-earthquake subduction patterns. UCSB, get your best "environmental" activists on this stat.

If the study proves once and for all that pumping the oil and relieving the pressure results in a cleaner environment, then I cannot see how you could classify this as useless. If the study is completed and the results promoted, then we could turn this ship around to where it should be headed. it wouldn’t require much money because the research has already been done. Just bringing it to the everyone’s Attention should be enough to change public opinion and get our policies straightened out.

The educational system around here has brainwashed so many kids (now adults) that they can’t tell their ass from a hole in the ground. local media can’t wait to pounce on a drop of oil spilled by a rig or tanker that goes completely silent over the mess now on our beaches. They pumped the Rifugio oil spill to the hilt. They had to change the normal method of reporting spills,(measured by barrels) to reporting the amount of gallons spilled, because it sounded much worse numerically. The media sucks and 70% of Santa Barbara‘s are gullible idiots.

I read that article from UCSB a long time ago. Being a surfer and beach goer in Goleta for the last 40 years. What is there now is completely normal
