Thanks Christy for sentencing yourself to attending that meeting and then tracing the money. It is time to shine the light on how many Non Government Organizations (NGOs) are dependent on the government for their funds. An example is the NGOs, undoubtedly funded by California, suing the federal government for cutting their funding.

Thank you Christy for shedding a bright light on local NGO’s which are taking money from questionable sources in order to circumvent federal immigration laws. Yes, it is quite surprising and disappointing to find the League of Women Voters are actually a front group for George Soros…what a shocker! BTW, is it not a conflict of interest for those public employees who also work for NFP’s which receive public funds? Where is our DA, should he not be investigating?

Lastly, last nights address to Congress was a monumental take down of the radical Democratic Party, for all to see. On display was the shocking, embarrassing, disgusting and treasonous behavior of Democratic members of Congress. Trump was masterful in his greatest performance in pointing out the criminality of failed liberal policies. To top it off, Rep. Al Green had to be removed from Congress for his repulsive outburst. Green, was once my Congressman and the people of Houston deserve so much better than this cane wielding buffoon. Can anyone imagine how these elected officials couldn’t even stand up for a child with cancer? That should tell us all we need to know. I wonder if local protesters/“burn outs” are proud of this while they embarrass our community every Saturday at the Tesla Dealership?

Brava, Christy! Laura Capps is a lousy excuse for a Supervisor, let alone human being - and unfortunately, she's my Supervisor. And she, like her LWV partners-in-carpetbagging are completely removed from the reality of the very terms they love to use for their own benefit. Let's take one of their favorite words: “diversity.”The idea that Santa Barbara needs Laura and Co to make it more diverse is offensive and ludicrous. If these Dem idiots ever spent time in Goleta, Lompoc or other non-Montecito parts of the county, they'd see how diverse SB is and how well people from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds get along. And they are often from recent immigrant families. But the Soros funded bunch doesn't care about hardworking immigrants or about protecting the safety of their neighborhoods from illegal criminals and gangs. Or helping them realize the American Dream through sending the next generation to good public schools.

Thanks again Christy for brilliantly researched article. I was not surprised to hear about the funding of these NGO‘s being inappropriate/illegal and I am always appalled when I hear these so-called not for profit entities claim that they are doing “pro bono“ work for these undocumented/illegal immigrants/aliens when they are keeping the overwhelming amount of their fundraising to pay off these lawyers that are pretending that they are doing it for free. Virtue signaling to the rest of us about their greatness when, in fact, they are just involved in the hustle of what I believe are illegal gotten gains. Pretty sure they’re just able to focus on immigration law because of their large salaries given to them by these Soros funded entities and not because of their righteousness and benevolence.

I understand the resistance… the resistance is against people being pulled out of their homes, people being pulled out of their schools. I dare say that some of you probably most of you have illegal immigrants cleaning your floors, your toilets, taking care of your parents, ironing your shirts, cooking your food, grooming, your lawns… but you turned a blind eye and you don’t ask whether or not they’re legal or illegal. You don’t speak to them to know whether or not they speak English. You choose to ignore them because you ignore them means you don’t have to know whether they are here legally or not. You don’t have to to know the horror story of how they got here. Shame on all of you!!! I live here in Santa Barbara, so I know the hypocrisy of Santa Barbara, Montecito, Goleta, Santa Ynez, and Carp. It’s OK to use illegal immigrants as long as it serves your purpose. As long as you don’t have to pay them the same wages as you would a white kid to pick your vegetables, work in your marijuana farms, flower farms, clean your house, wash dishes in your restaurants, or pick grapes in your vineyards, so don’t pretend to care about the safety of ICE agents, because ICE agents are not in danger when they are ripping fruit pickers and their kids out of their homes. What a bunch of effing entitled hypocrites. Santa Barbarans are the worst. They will be the first to cry when they have to pay more for food in a restaurant, or more at the grocery store when there is no one to pick their fruits and vegetables. They hire illegal immigrants, don’t want to pay them anything to work for them, and then complain that they are a part of the community. You can bet your ass that you won’t see any of their entitled white kids picking up the slack in the fields, cleaning houses, landscaping Oprah’s yard or working the vineyards. Who are you people?!!!!

I read the article, and one of my friends was holding a Trump sign on the bridge. That same friend complained to me weeks before that her illegal immigrant housekeeper raised her rate to $35/hr., so she fired her after 5 years of working with her, and that all of the illegal immigrant housekeepers in Santa Barbara and Montecito must’ve gotten together because all of them are charging the same $35/hr. now. My comment still stands. It’s OK to rip illegal immigrants out of their homes and out of businesses in Santa Barbara county, as long as it’s not their underpaid and over worked illegal immigrants. Also, why not use ICE for something useful like going into red light districts and looking for people who have been trafficked. Those people would love to return to their families. I don’t see MAGAS complaining about the danger the Jan 6 rioters have imposed on the public since being released, or the danger to the public that the Tate brothers now being loose in the US pose to women and children. I guess as long as Trump endorses the absolute worst bottom feeders of society to be walking among us, it’s okay with MAGAs as long as they were born here, but by God! Let’s not let an illegal immigrant or birther fruit picker or landscaper stay in this country. Twisted logic.

Excellent reporting, Christy. We have a town drunk on virtue-signaling and running up massive future-generation debt. Assume most of those present were government employees in some form, with vested interests to insure the free flow of tax and spend dollars landing in their own back pockets.

While pretending they are doing something for others who are here illegally, they keep their blinders on to avoid acknowledging what they are in fact doing undermines the fabric of our society right here and now. They are both ambitious and craven, while some climb the political ladder for their own enrichment. The perils of living in this government town. Nary a mention or acknowledgment of the tax burdens they are freely handing out for someone else to pay off.

Indeed, where was mention of local pathways to legal citizenship in any of these presentations. Shame on SBCC Board President Jonathan Abboud, not even mentioning his own institution that he claims to oversee is a primary local resource for legal citizenship and and assimilation. Abboud instead celebrates protecting and encouraging even more illegal border crossings as his one chosen option. This is madness.

Both Laura Capps and Jonathan Abboud are elected officials, which are still positions responsive to the will of the voters. Give them a new message.

There you go again Christy. Connecting the dots when are you going to learn the other side doesn't like it.

Found it interesting that many of the groups you listed have as part of their efforts is making sure there is open space. Has anyone look lately at the demands by the Governor and Legislature to push RHNA? Demands by the State of Calif. to do high density infill and push denisty development right up to the forest / urban interface.

Years ago when CAB requested the Fund for Santa Barbara fund our public petitions to government to keep open streets that included freedom of bike use. When we stated we never ask for or use government taxpayer money, there was a chuckle and the answer was they doubted we would be funded. end of call

What has happened to the supposed middle of the road League of Women Voters. A group that my Grandmother was a member of and who supported my Grandfather for his successful run for Santa Barbara City Council? It is the open secrete they are now prejudiced and have no interest in objective view of the world.

SBCAN was started mainly in Lompoc and was run out of town when they attempted to close down the street in front of City Hall. Like the CEC they hold a tin cup out for funding from government. SBCAN just begged for the City of Guadalupe to let them mange a land use item and of course for a handsome pay. The CEC reviews air quality in north county that is automatically reported to the county.....

If you have not fully read this article re-read it again.

The author has given you a very accurate compass, a map the states this way is north.

On an divergent note, anyone Notice Newsom has suspended CEQA and CCC regulations the will allow very high density infill at the Palisades..... Wonder how the open space organizations mentioned above will respond to this.

Don't like facts and trails leading to people? Don't read this one.

Christy, another excellent and informative article. One thing that stands out to me and has been mentioned in The Current in the past is that a good portion, if not all, of these people who are defying a constitutional order are the very people that could and should have been using their positions to help get the illegal immigrants quickly on the path to citizenship instead of supporting their illegal status for lengthy periods of time (years), while spending taxpayer dollars and making very healthy salaries for themselves. I have no doubt that there are some genuinely well intentioned people (not the salaried, government people or a good portion of the NGO's) who honestly think they are helping a just cause but I am hoping that their eyes will be opened soon to see that they are only perpetuating a situation that is becoming increasingly dangerous.

If someone is found guilty of a a violent crime and they are undocumented, they serve their time, and are deported! Obviously this group is a Trump loving, immigrant hating right wing, Nazi flag waving, white supremacist, MAGA extremist faction in Santa Barbara, who do not support women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, or any rights other than Christian national rights which are not Christian at all. Ms. Lozano, you seem to be a bit outraged of people helping immigrants by letting them know their rights. I’m surprised there’s no outrage after last nights speech. How trump is selling America, at $ 5 million a pop, and you can bet he’ll have plenty of takers from every country in the world, will they be vetted, maybe but if they have the money they’re in. It’s the poor immigrants of color who are no longer welcome in this country.

I told you all he would spend more than half the time praising himself and all his dirty deeds, and he did not disappoint. Unfortunately, his speech is also full of his lies, half truths and misconceptions. I don’t know I’m surprised.

Julia, many countries have "investment driven" paths to citizenship, often at much lower numbers. It is an important immigration tool. Why are you so shocked to only learn about this now?

What is better for the health of this country - allowing unvetted illegals take out $5 million each in tax dollars funded benefits and charges with no strings attached? Or allowing carefully vetted legal immigrants bring in $5 million dollars for domestic investment, with strings attached?

JL, I’m sorry you didn’t get my point and you probably never will but anyway. I have heard of investment driven paths to citizenship. Fine take in all the wealthy foreigners you want, that’s the only time people don’t object to the color of their skin as long as their money is green. Why can’t there be an easier path to citizenship for people seeking a better life? People who may not have $5 million, but can provide proof that they can support themselves if allowed in, no matter their skin color. The immigrants that have been here for years, decades even. Yes, they should’ve taken the time to do their paperwork, but I don’t think they thought that by living a lawabiding life and providing for them selves would not be enough to let them stay and give them help in obtaining their citizenship.

Julia, Yes, they didn't take time to do their legal paperwork, did they. Why not? What other "paperwork" might also be missing. Do not overlook I was legal guest worker in two different foreign countries. I speak of which I know.

There is no alchemy that magically changes illegal status into legal status, nor can any belated gesture now allow people to jump to the head of the line of those already patiently and hopefully waiting for their legal turn.

When the first choice was to commit an illegal act to enter this country, there is no room for do-overs. It is their job to make things right; not demand we make things right for them. This seems to be a sticking point in this discussion.

I think you are one who misses the point. But the intentional chip on your shoulder is disturbing your vision. Take it off when you want to engage in any future discussions. Meanwhile, your efforts are better directed to helping people use proper processes to obtain legal status, and stop making excuses for them.

I value your suggestions, Julia. Keep them coming. It helps us get to know you better. However, sorry you missed the meat and substance of the Trump address.

Truth be told, I had no idea Democrats would respond as such blooming idiots, who listened to not a word he actually since they were spring- loaded to react to what they thought he would say but did not, before he even opened his mouth. That was shabby. Which is why 10 Democrats did vote to censure Rep Green. Nascent bi-partisanship. Step in the right direction. Or pure embarrassment as other reports suggest.

That speech was also pure Trump, the same Trump that won in 2024 across the entire nation, absent the left coasts. You are right, there were no surprises in demeanor. Pure Trump, like we both have come to know. People accept he has the right to talk like this after what Democrat lawfare and palace intrigue has put him through as a singular individual since 2015.

But lots of substance was also highlighted, which was exactly what voters were hungry to see made manifest. There is also a certain amount of delight knowing he bugs you so much. You are his foil. So keep telling us how much Trump bugs you. We would miss this feedback and worry we were no longer on target.

Got to admit, the best line of the night was saying we did not need new laws passed to close the border; we just needed a new President.
