I attended a Catholic high school where my favorite teacher taught World History in sophomore year and Sociology and Socialism in senior year. Every morning of class we prayed the Prayer of St Francis…”Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace…”, and I took living a life that made a difference in the world seriously. My education and family prepared me to foster intrinsic human rights and values, and be a blessing to others by being a builder, a planetary citizen of the world community we share.
Experiences in the 60's varied throughout the country. I was in college in the southeast where there were no protests. For example, the University of Tennessee left it up to the individual faculty members to decide whether to hold classes after Kent State shooting. My students were split with the veterans saying they had paid for the classes and some others opposing my holding class. I held class and reviewed the material covered in the next class. I saw conservatism in the college of business, where I taught, and liberalism in the college of law where I was studying. My fellow law students were unwilling to make the difficult decisions that would require people to pay for their own lifestyles rather than depend on the government.
As always, your thoughtful perspective is welcome and vitally important...we are of similar age and experiences it seems (Cal Poly SLO 1969). I wish that some of my very "progressive" friends - who are among those out there protesting - had the capacity, writ courage, to open their aperatures and hear the points you make instead of mindlessly and unquestionably spouting, like coached parrots, the elixirs of "democratic socialism" (writ communist ideals) as the solution to the natural growing pains of our democracy that is confronted with addressing the needs of an ever-growing growing population.
I had occasion to work rather extensively in Russia in the first half of the '90s. In the mid-90s I happened across an assertion from a senior Russian General - not at all a supporter of the overthrow of the totalitarian/communist governance of the former Soviet Union - the essence of which was, "We will allow the US to lull itself into a sense of supremacy such that Americans become soft...and then we will rip out their unguarded underbellies..."

Out on the front lines today it is the older generation who are the leaders chapters in our city with groups such as Indivisible. Do these groups fulfill the void for them that once was filled with worship to GOD.

The education part and why kids are failing may be that they don't want them to succeed and or have critical thinking to realize that their government and individuals are corrupt. Why did they take religion out of schools?
Well done, John. I have a grandson who could use a few life lessons. Sometimes you can teach them as well as you can and they still go astray. I wasn't the best kid in those days. Took a while to come around, I hope this new crop gets their act together. Their world is changing so fast I don't think they can even keep up. My granddaughter who lives with her phone told me wishes they didn't exist. She's only 20 but they played outside before the arrival of the mind altering machines were created.

I have a feeling that most of the writers of the Santa Barbara current have a dismissive, if not downright opposing view of my culture and sensibilities and write me down as a navel gazing Lala living nobody without any principles such as you describe, I’m sorry about that. The divide between us is great enough already without furthering it.

I remember helicopters overhead scanning spotlights to catch us running under cover in Del Mar. My history teacher was little different from yours. It wasn't actually listed as history, but it was. It was in truth the most boring class I ever took...really. His books not so much...they did get me to think. His name was Herbert Marcuse. The TA (teacher assistant) was Angela Davis. The immediate result of that class was my parents withdrew funding. I guess it was a life changer...but not in the way you'd expect. The reason I even took the class in the first place was because I spotted this girl. We've been together for over 50 years. We never turned into communists. By the way...the best Crosby, Stills, Nash for me is Wooden Ships.
