Henry, We must have gone to the same school, although I was usually smacked on the head with a soup spoon! Keep studying, my friend and one day, who knows, you'll learn where Kazakhstan is!
When I attended UCLA in the 1970s, tuition was less than $1000 per year. Today tuition is $15,000/year and UCLA is considered a bargain. How has it gotten so expensive? Tuition increases have outpaced any correction for inflation. Simply, the federal government has stepped in to make college affordable. The single biggest factor contributing to the downfall of American universities was the takeover of the student loan program by the federal governent. By 2010 under Obama, all student loans were through the federal government. So tuition was no longer limited to students ability to pay. A direct cash pipeline from the federal government to the universities was created. I am sickened by having to pay for failed universities serving as indoctrination mills. I am further sickened by student loan forgiveness. Soon no student would ever consider repaying a student loan. Why would they? Our healthcare industry is on a parallel path and also has been largely destroyed by my least favorite president, Obama. As I love to say.....there is nothing so expensive as that which the governmentent has sought to make affordable.
Jeff, the other reason for the accelerating cost of a college "education": Government-sponsored student "loans" that have allowed professors and administrators to haul in extravagant salaries, including million-dollar yearly compensation by shovelling money to students, comfortable in the knowledge that the U.S. taxpayer will ultimately cover their absurd payroll costs.
Administrative overhead increases probably correlate to the numbers of new pages and new regulations added to the California Education Code. Takes an army of administrators to fend off potential labor union job actions. They might even be working on this together, to ensure one more government full employment act for all concerned. BigGovernment and partisan hegemony is the real goal.
Thanks for writing. The cost of college education through loans was a gold mine for the universities. The curriculum increased from reading writing and arithmetic to very obscure degrees that the "free" loan money would pay for; of course the newly created "degrees" are generally worthless in our economy and we the people are now left on the debt hook. The cost of education is not limited to college. The California public school system is overpriced as well and has turned into a mass employment agency where educating kids is secondary to the great paying jobs and pensions financed by the naive blank check taxpayer.
Outstanding article Mr Schulte. You didn’t have to go to college to be prosperous and well known in the Santa Barbara Community. That is the essence of America. 🇺🇸. I concur with your solution for the crazed Hamas Terror sympathizers. These radical sympathizers know nothing about the history of the Jewish people and their “story “, and obviously know nothing about the story of the savage Hamas. Not one Muslim country wants to open its borders to the Palestinians. I wonder why? History has proven that their radical and deadly bent on their religion causes death and chaos wherever they go. The demonization of women and their laws against humanity has destroyed countries and their populations. They teach children to hate the Jewish people and to kill them whenever they can. They idolize Death, and not LIFE. May God protect America and bring in a President that will protect its people and culture.
If the Palestinians did leave to surrounding Muslim countries, what then? Would Israel just allow them to move back into their ancestral homeland or would the military and Israeli settlers prevent and return for the Palestinians?
Again, wil Israel allows the Palestinians to return to their homeland after the war ends? Or will they engage in further ethnic cleansing by moving into their lands as they have done since 1948?
My real-world education started when I was eleven years old, in 1945. When WW2 ended. We had no television in the UK. Our visual news came from newsreels in the cinemas shown before the entertainment started. We went to the movies quite a lot, so we saw a lot of the latest news visually.
Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Treblinka, Dachau are names burned into my memory. In these newsreels, I saw the unforgettable horrors of German, Nazi, mass slaughter and degradation of almost the entire Jewish population of Germany and the countries the Germans had invaded in Europe.
How could a young boy ever forget the thousands of emaciated and diseased bodies of those still barely alive? How could one possibly forget the piles of dead bodies of those gassed and starved to death who had not yet been deposited in burial pits?
Who can put aside the massive piles of belongings salvaged by the Germans as plunder to be re-used?
Who was not horrified by all this? Then, to learn of the forced labor and medical experimentation that those Jews, who could still stand, suffered in forced labor to serve the Third Reich?
Who can forget the horror and pain in the faces and the tenderness of the American and British forces who found and rescued the pitiful, remaining, starving Jews and other victims of the Nazi, inhumane eradication of innocent human beings? Then, we saw they had to find ways to deal respectfully with the piles of dead Jews, whose bodies were abandoned by their German, death camp guards as the fled the allied military advances.
Six million, or more, Jews were tortured, starved, raped and gassed to death by the Nazi regime of Hitler.
How could anyone deny or forget seeing the results of these atrocities by humans upon other humans, just because they were Jews?
I remember, after seeing these pictures and news commentary, feeling a great sense of sorrow and guilt. Why could we not have stopped this earlier? How could we have not known earlier and done more to prevent it?
At eleven years of age, I began to lose what faith I had in the Kindnesses I had experienced in the human nature around me. If the German people were capable of allowing this. Could we be capable of it too?
As I grew older, these uncertainties faded. But the images of what humans are capable of, will never leave me.
The wave of antisemitism sweeping across many of our universities, infecting half-educated students, spread and financed by powerful outside forces, is a harbinger of worse to come, if we are not vigilant and forceful in putting it down.
At some point in our lives, the silent majority has to stand up and be counted.
My dad, Russian, Jewish, just used his belt. After a while he just needed to reach for it, not actually use it. It was effective. My siblings were 4 males and a female. 1 boy is enough, but 4? I understand him better now.
In the late 70’s and early 80’s I started spouting the usual communist propaganda that was de rigueur. My dad’s education method? He sent me to the USSR to “meet my ancestors and get in touch with my roots” 😂 it was…”educational” (spent most of my time there finding out my grandparents and great grandparents were all dead, killed in anti-Semitic pograms, left wing purges, or starved to death in one of the constant “5 year plans” that changed every week or so. Going from the Virginia suburbs to Moscow ….It was like stepping into a black and white film noir movie.
I came back 20lbs lighter and looking like I just seen a ghost….a few weeks later I cut off all relationships with people that sung the praises of socialism and communism. I saw them in a new light. They were spoiled clueless children who had no idea. Every time I heard one of them open his mouth about what a dunce Reagan was or how capitalism oppresses the working class, or something just vaguely antisemitic or some other nonsense; I remembered the faces of everyone I met in my "educational trip" to the USSR...and I would wince.
Those clueless spoiled children are now parents of these same college students cheering on the Nazis-Hamas and they are in charge of our country.
Every time they or their geriatric leader Biden (for godsakes people he even looks like Emperor Palpadine!!...fer crying out loud what's wrong with you people?..Snap out of it!! The thrall needs to go out of this relationship!) When they open their mouths to chant their slogans and propaganda, I still wince. I have seen where this leads, and am powerless to stop it. I guess my grandparents felt the same way as they threw their kids into the unknown voyage to the West. At least they had somewhere to go. We do not.
Wow. Eric, what an utterly amazing story. Your dad's "Immersion" teaching method really needs to be adopted in some form here in the USA. There is nothing like coming face to face with the theories and philosophy one spouts when one never has to see the actual consequences.
My parents were oldschool, from the old country….it has its pros and cons. Dad had a lot of one liner wisdoms. The man did not suffer fools and tried to impart that to us kids as best he could.
“There is nothing like coming face to face with the theories and philosophy one spouts”
Unfortunately; you don’t have to go far now to come face to face. Just go to LA. It’s sad that we have allowed this to happen to our great nation.
I have a close friend who recently moved to Russia (he was from there but idolized America and all it stood for. 4 years of Biden’s America and he was done. He lived this growing up in the USSR.
When I asked him why he was leaving he said and I quote: “I am moving back to Russia for the freedom.”
How did Russia manage the passage of their Soviet era fetal alcohol syndrome-damaged generation? These numbers would be still moving down their current demographics.
Did they outgrow the fetal alcohol syndrome damages, rehabilitate them, require institutionalization, or did this birth damage lead premature mortality.
“How did Russia manage the passage of their Soviet era fetal alcohol syndrome-damaged generation?”
On the last person to defend the Soviets, but I think it’s time we start asking the question was there really a fetal alcohol syndrome damage generation? Or was that just more propaganda, fed to us by our government?
Freedom? What's so liberating about Russia? I don't idolize America or "muh democracy", but Russia has lots of degeneracy and social issues not unlike America, so what's the big deal here?
The condition of not being in prison or captivity.
"gave the prisoners their freedom."
The condition of being free of restraints, especially the ability to act without control or interference by another or by circumstance.
"In retirement they finally got the freedom to travel."
The condition of not being controlled by another nation or political power; political independence.
“What's so liberating about Russia?”
Just spitballing here but my guess is that it’s less expensive, cost of living is super cheap, it’s less regulated, and you can be a white Christian male there with a traditional family and not have to make any apologies 🤷♂️
But really, you should go and check it out nowadays.
“I don't idolize America or "muh democracy"
You should. That’s kind of the crux of the biscuit here.
And what is “muh” democracy??
“Russia has lots of degeneracy and social issues”
Really? Like what? So you know this how exactly?
“what's the big deal here?”
I don’t know 🤷♂️…maybe that old Joni Mitchel song 🎶 “ Don't it always seem to go
Drug use, corruption, pornography/prostitution, ethnic tensions, poverty are all issues that plague Russia and America, Russia is far from a haven for Christians when the secular government is literally waging war on orthodox Christians who aren't under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate Kiril.
A real haven would be the Catholic country of Malta. Democracy is cringe, read some Aristotle and America is a godless nation founded on secular enlightenment ideals, so no thanks.
Wow! Thanks for sharing. You got a much better global education than I did. It's too bad we can't get that across to so many who are blind and want to remain so.
Can Biden & his handlers be “compelled to watch those films”? Then what might change? We are presently a confused nation assisting both sides in this war despite the atrocities and intentions of Hamas. If anyone understands why our Congressional uni-Party votes to keeping spending, and Biden uses our military for humanitarian missions, will you please explain? Why do we want to ‘win the hearts and minds’ of terrorists out to destroy US. There’s no disagreement too many Americans have no exposure to life’s harsh realities throughout the world or honest media. Too many Americans pursue recreational resort travel rather than experiential foreign travel focused I. learning. The ‘everyone gets a trophy’, soft generation, befriended and supported by a parent, has come of age. The progressives have effectively reached out to the aimless youth messaging ‘you belong with us, we’ll take care of you’.
Your family did its job preparing you for life’s realities. Thanks for sharing your life story. It’s up to parents and family to teach, educate, expose, and instill values. Parenting is a 24/7 continuous job for a minimum of 18 years. Locally, it seems for various reasons more parents now rely heavily on the greater community ‘village’ to raise, feed, and nurture the child they have created. Multiple day care centers on high school campuses concerns me.
Every college across the US, including UCSB allow non students to trespass and support terrorists on school grounds.
Teachers support the terrorists movement. They encourage students to join the mob.
This happens right here at SBHS, The Principal, Vice Principal and Assistant Superintendent are involved in not only encouraging pro terrorist support but squash any student who voices opposition, sending them threatening attorney letters to quiet them.
These protests at colleges are started by non students who are paid. Much like the trucks that would arrive at Antifa/BLM riots full of riot gear for the protestors.
They are financially supported by Dem Donors and corporate media.
They are mobilizing militias using terrorist style techniques of using people as the weapons.
They fly foreign nation flags while committing violence.
People, and youth, are ignorant. They are products of American education designed to create followers in the Cult of the Donkey.
These kids support a designated terrorist group whose actions have been labeled war crimes, crimes against humanity by the UN.
American youth and ignorant adults choose to support terrorists who most recently mass murdered 1,200 victims including 35 Americans.
Biden plays quid pro quo, demanding Israel stop pursuing the mass murderers by refusing to supply the ammunition to Israel.
The US is manipulating another countries response to a terrorist attack.
The Democrats in charge are attacking America & Israel.
When you zoom out and see the Antifa riots through today you should realize we have been in a war, we are being attacked from within our own borders by people “elected” to office.
Obama & Biden openly attack the Constitution repeatedly despite swearing an oath to uphold it.
Talk to your neighbor, find out why they keep voting to support the destruction of this country and our freedoms.
Israel is not a friend of the United States. We are a friend of Israel yes, but Israel does nothing for us or America in general. Democrats do support Israel because Zionist lobbying groups like AIPAC fund both Democrats and Republicans.
Shared sovereign interests works better, than asking for "friendship" in the world of international real politik. Recall what shared "friendships" did to start WWI.
Israel steals our technology and has sold it off to China, they really don't have our best interests at heart. Can't forget about the USS Liberty Incident either.
Call the cut Israel gets selling our secrets to China part of our "aid package" to them, rather than letting China steal them all directly anyway.
Cutting out the middleman is no real benefit, in this unfortunate case. Pretty much a global ethic now -" if you are not stealing from the government, you are stealing from your family". This is what happens when one wholesale replaces "WASP values" on the world stage. And keep pretending others will follow our own former -prudent-honest-thrift-fairplay - guidelines.
Look at just California and its $40 billion "covid" losses to know it is a very changed world; we even cheat on ourselves. None of this should shock us any longer. Only the fact we are still not watching out for our own best interests..... first.
We do need to stop throwing our tax dollars around so easily.
Little will change until sufficient numbers have the back of those elected to foster this change. No one person can, nor should, do anything, other than guide the expressed will of the people. Petty pejorative personal putdowns are not needed. Time to get on board instead.
I believe the "aid to Israel" was part of a quid pro quo treaty agreement; not just money-laundering handouts. Though there is that angle too, for any military-industrial complex contract "aid" mutual obligations. We give you the money; you are required to buy our armaments.
If the goal is to end the war, the US supporting both sides prolongs it. The Gaza population reportedly supported and continues to support Hamas whose mission it is to destroy Israel. Then what country is next? Is it our responsibility - the task of US - to globally save every person from their country’s leadership, from their reality?
Given how Israel is dead set on destroying the last remaing Hamas Battalions which is why they have started invading Rafah I sincerely doubt that any of this money will be used to fund the soon to be non-existent Hamas. There are famines in Palestine and Israel has destroyed so many homes and what little infrastructure there is that I doubt it would be used to build up any paramilitary group.
Great reality check. City folk generally have no clue as to where their food comes from or how it is made, little less knowing anything about the cost of freedom. Not all, but most younger citizens, have been coddled too much by lazy parents and over bearing government/bureaucrats. They have been made dependent on government. I think Regan stated that, freedom is just one generation away from being lost. I know that is true, just look at this entitled generation that is protesting against the Jews. History does repeat itself, over and over and over.................. Here we go again, more pain and suffering and death. PS- College education, what a waste, scam, con and joke. Not needed for 75% of the population. IMHO
Boy did this remind me of my childhood, both my parents were German third generation, but they ruled with an iron hand. My dad was an inventor and had his own factory, I was running a punch press at the age of nine. We had a 40 foot catamaran, my best friend was on board, my dad gave a command, when she didn’t move he spun her around and back handed her, he thought she was me .
I want to thank all you, whether I agree or not with your opinion for participating in this debate. It's impossible to find middle ground on most things these days but to discuss the issues is cleansing and who knows, some may see the light. I was also very pleased to read the other personal stories and experiences. Thank you all for sharing. But regardless on what side of the Gaza Strip you're on, there is one simple truth and solution. Return the hostages, throw down your arms and walk away. It can be over in five minutes. You will likely never be forgiven for the hell you caused to so many innocent people but such is the world and violent planet on which we live. We can only hope there is a culling process in the after life.
My nine German uncles fought in WWII against their own people who became Nazified.
As you have stated ..... seems that everyone has not been properly educated.
"These adolescents have no idea what a real education is. What it’s like to be persecuted for thousands of years. They can’t handle a bad hair day. These spoiled brats and their Hamas colleagues need to be slapped with massive doses of reality and common-sense."
"My grandfather would have no problem offering his educational services."
Neither would my past family generation ..... the problem is they are all gone the last of my family
generation just passed at age 102, knowing that this Country stripped us of our basic freedoms.
I am glad the rest of my past family members, the greatest generation, has not lived to see how they have destroyed what they all have fought for 75 years ago. The "new generation" has forgetten all.

That's all gonna change when Trumpy gets back in.
Little will change until sufficient numbers have the back of those elected to foster this change. No one person can, nor should, do anything, other than guide the expressed will of the people. Petty pejorative personal putdowns are not needed. Time to get on board instead.
Our 24th Congressman Salud Carbajal supports aid to Gaza. (He serves on the Armed Services Committee, gaining his US Citizenship in the military reserves). Please read: https://www.edhat.com/news/carbajal-urges-president-to-uphold-law-regarding-delivery-of-humanitarian-aid-to-gaza/
What's the issue? We already send billions of dollars in foreign aid to Israel so what's so bad about Palestinians receiving relief aid?
IMHO
Henry Schulte, I appreciate your candid assessment of many of today's spoiled, ignorant youth.

Thank you for writing this. Absolutely riveting.
Thanks, Tim. I also want to say I love the education you give me through your own articles.
Mr. Schulte, is seems that we have a very similiar background
and "Worldview" or "Weltanschauungs"
Your family lived in Simmern and mine is from Michelstadt, just outside
of Frankfurt Germany.
