Bravo. Thank-you for shining a light on the craziness and corruption. Any wonder that enrollment at SBCC is down 50% "? Students are "voting with their feet." Meanwhile, the faculty push for a four day work week.
Some push for 4 day work week while radical Faculty Senate prefer remote teaching. The Math Dept Chair even thinks math can be taught remotely. Presumably she couldn’t get a job at a student focused Kumon Center so somehow is math chair at SBCC. Amazing what these faculty leaders get away with by intimidation and strategic bullying.
We are playing the long game, and we must not give up and continue to expose the corruption that plagues our communities and our nation. We must fight this on a local level, and in this article, Celeste Barber punts one hard down the field and we need the team to show up to catch the ball for a touchdown at the SBCC meeting on Thursday. Great Article Celeste!
This is insanely. Why in the world are we funding this stupidity. Peter Naylor, who was head of the college when I worked there , would be appalled. 😳. Hopefully, this will open up the eyes of our residents and parents. Enough!!!!
Rita, that was Dr Peter MacDougall who was President of SBCC. Peter Naylor was the esteemed Business Economics professor - both worthy guardians of SBCC during their times on campus.
Peter Haslund voted with far left, Rita. He was part of Marty Blum’s Gang of Four ELECTED purposefully to take control of SBCC . Econ Prof Naylor retired, or left SBCC.
Peter Haslund, not Peter Naylor ( Trustee for Carp/Montecito SBCC District) was elected with the new SBCC board majority in 2010: Blum, Haslund, Macker, Croninger.
This piece is no more than a Right-wing snowflake rant...I am all for increasing Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and knowing the impacts of racism and exploitation (past, present and future). Have you "checked out" what our public library pays for each ebook access licenses to see if these fees are excessive? $11,000/10copies may be viewed at a time/$31.54 per copy with sales tax = 35 uses per copy to break even... I agree that that level of use per copy might take awhile. Our military, NASA, National parks, the interstate/highway system, the judicial system, public schools, and law enforcement and the fire department ARE examples of socialism. Social Security and Medicare are also examples of socialistic programs. Like it or not, every taxpayer in the country pays for these programs & services and, like it or not, these programs & services are available to everyone in the country. We all contribute, we all benefit … socialism.
I don't mind being confronted by honest debate here, but I personally have no use for personal attacks and labeling: " This piece is a ...Right wing snowflake rant". I assure you the author of this piece is sincere, well-researched, ethical, and a highly independent thinker. Continuing to debate whether limited government services supported by our representative form of elected governance are "socialism", is a far more worthy debate.
James your past posts on X describe your position on SBCC and moderate registered NPPs, and destain for MAGA. To answer one of your posted concerns: Doing away with essential remedial classes was desired and approved by far left trustee majority: the gang of 4 pushed by and including former Mayor Marty Blum. Academic faculty and moderates plus conservative taxpayers and students wanted and still need remedial classes. This decision was opposed by District SBCC Taxpayers and students.
GOAL: Hide the truth! Dumb down SBCC and statewide State colleges & UCs. The typical SBCC student that is a high school graduate is proficient at less than 5th grade level. It was embarrassing to adult high school grads to be tested at SBCC along with local 4th and 5th graders who by far exceeded them on timed placement tests. My kids tested and enrolled at SBCC in 5th grade; finished 60 units by 11th for auto transfer to UCSB as a junior. That enabled consideration by MIT, UW, etc as FRESHMEN! In the meantime, SBCC has sunked to a new low failing to serve our majority- minority population.
Locals blindly elect Trustees. DO NOT VOTE, if you don’t know the policy and fiscal priorities of who you’re voting for or against. Nothing will change in our Local Bubble until each voter’s 🐂ox is gored.
The e book price looks insane, on the face of it. However the real issue is what this book is teaching. Sending your kids to a woke institution whose goal is to brainwash them is the major issue. The price of the soap is secondary.
I've no idea why you'd think I have invoices of books purchased by SBCC or anybody else -- I know about these matters only because I have long complained about publishers' policies with regard to e-books and libraries. I'm sure the library would be happy to tell you how many times they can loan an e-book. I see that California has begun a project for "eBooks for All California. Created to equalize access across California." Maybe you'd like to look into that?
This is a truly curious mishmash -- Yes, you can buy a single hard copy of RACIAL FORMATIONS for $50 at Amazon, where you could also buy a copy for $34 or get the Kindle book for $19, none of which is relevant to the point Barber is trying to make. Either she is deliberately misleading readers, or she is woefully ignorant of the way that libraries handle e-books. Publishers require libraries to purchase licenses to loan an e-book a certain number of times, after which they must purchase a new license. The library in this instance is not paying $1100 to purchase one copy of a book -- They are paying for authorization to loan the e-book a certain number of times to borrowers. I'd be curious to know how much the library would have to pay for a similar license to loan e-book copies of SCHOOL OF WOKE. Evidently it did not occur to the writer of this editorial to inquire.
What certain number of times is the book able to be loaned out, exactly? Strangely, your assumption of how it all works doesn't seem to be part of the invoice.
The intrinsic worth of this book is probably less than zero, if that is possible. Propaganda based on a mostly false version of the racial history of the US to blame this generation for what transpired in previous generations is just another form of racism perpetuated by money-making hustlers and hucksters.
There's nothing strange about this at all -- Invoices, in my experience, do not include all the contract terms. If you believe that the library is in fact paying $1,100 for just one copy of a book, I'd suggest you ask the library for a copy of the agreement. While you're at it, maybe you should pay the $19.22 for the Kindle edition of the book so you'll have some notion of what you are talking about.

We have taken GOD out of the public schools and now the schools have been infiltrated by people like this!
What could possibly go wrong!!

So interesting... and we wonder why our children can't spell or read
Is it Thursday the 18th or Friday the 19th? You said Thursday the 19 In error I believe.
Yes, Thursday the 18th at 4 pm

Seems like a pretty important term, no? Given all your experience in these matters, maybe you would share invoices of other ebooks purchased by SBCC?
