All of a sudden the elementary school, Jr. High, and High School, this is why we need to take for socialism, became a cruel joke. It is one thing to give for your personal needs. It far different to have government "TAKE" hard earned money from your pocket because some religion or group states "it is only right." They want it to happen and are not willing to take from their own pockets beyond what they can afford.
Look at the Social Agenda at the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors, and the individual cities in the County and you will see why the State and County are basically bankrupt. The dream is a nightmare.
Thank you for writing. New York will be an interesting place to watch as the Biden Harris administration's economic philosophies play out and.. as the Trump administration engages with his economic philosophies. What residents will be left there holding the bags of socialism and capitalism? I suspect that the most "creative" option to increased government is to raise taxes. Like California, New York is loosing population to better situations reducing the taxpayer base. The Mamdani experiment begins tomorrow.
Very thought provoking article. Beyond the analysis of economic systems, we need to recognize “human nature” and how, to varying degrees, humans would like to be taken care of. Further, the concept of competition frightens most people because whether we consider the arena of athletics or academia, most people are not confident of success. Berney
The citizens of Berlin did not risk death to go to the East. When the wall was torn down, people voted with their feet. It is an interesting fact that those in the West who are most attuned to the joys of freedom of thought and private enterprise are those who have fled the socialist countries of their birth. Poland and Hungary are now much more appealing than the rotting corpses of Britain France and Germany. Socialism paired with Islamic invasion is an obviously ( to most) deadly combination. Failure to see this is the formula for societal suicide. New York will be a demonstration of what people who have a choice will do. We have purchased Florida real estate as an investment.
Yes David, you made great observations about Mamdani. On a positive note, this new mayor will flush out lots of hardworking people and companies, making NY city a handout city to the lazy ones that will occupy abandoned buildings until they are unlivable. The city infrastructure is really bad; the city is old and needs to be reconstructed and a post-Mamdani might just trigger this event. Keep the good buildings and level the old ones. Install new underground plumbing and electric power, transportation, etc. This will attract business and working class back into the city. Socialists will save the big cities <g>. For now, in go to NYC is the non-working transients across the country. Mamdani will have few to tax to pay for all his freebees.
Communism throughout history has had different names, but the same process and total failure. There are a few in every generation that thinks they have the secret to making communism/marxism/socialism and progressivism work, and they have just enough stupid people to believe them.
“He received the votes of 12% of New York City’s 8.5 million residents”, reminds us that 88% of New York City residents either do not support Mamdani, or are too alienated to vote,
or trust others to control their lives via public policy.
All I can say is I hope Zohran Mamdani’s plan for New York City works out like he Invisions. I will say, if you only have a choice of Socialism or Fascism, I would take Socialism every time. Not like the Fascism we’re living under now.
The fatal flaw in free market capitalism is human nature. A quote I thought was from Samuel Johnson, but google tells me is attributed to Adam Smith: "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices." Remember the Thucydides comment: "The strong do what they will and the weak will suffer what they must." A completely free market will automatically slide towards the formation of cartels and monopolies. And the unscrupulous will have no checks on doing things like putting chalk dust in bad milk, and other profit enhancing scams. A well regulated market works far better as far as public interest is concerned.
Of course, I doubt that anybody here is in favour of abolishing meat inspections, safety regulations on autos, prescription and over the counter drugs, and so on. All of which fall under a socialist umbrella (i.e., protection of ordinary citizens from the powerful). The constitution establishes the three pillars necessary for a stable and functional government: the executive (enforcement of the law), congress (the socialist, protection of individuals against the powerful) and the judiciary (the guardian of individual rights). Any movement too far in any of these directions leads to dysfunction.

Mr. McCalmont great dissertation.

Mamdummy will fail. NYC will rally.
Brilliant piece by David. I envy his ability to put into writing this recurring fascination with socialism despite its copious history of failure.
