This question was explored in our campaign running against Salud Carbajal. We couldn’t find any evidence of legal immigration. We even consulted with Grock on X and the best it could come up with was to state: “since Carbajal is a congressman he must have been a legal immigrant”. Which passes for proof in the AI world but seems weak. Since he may have gained citizenship in 1990 we did the complex math on entry USA in 1964 to 1990 and called him an illegal alien for 26 years. So about half his life an illegal alien, which explains Salud’s love of the open border with Mexico and illegal migration in general. In the later months of the campaign we were attacked by Salud’s surrogate, Media Matters (funded by Soros and USAID government grants of $600,000 in 2024) The Media Matters posts deduced that Cole hated Mexicans because we are America first, safe borders. This racial smear was distributed to local papers in SLO and north SB counties, who were happy to print this as fact in an obvious effort to help and protect Salud. So it’s understandable that Salud doesn’t want people talking about or even asking about his questionable entry to our nation. I could go on, because this country welcomed Salud, housed and educated him, good paying easy jobs in government but he turns around and disrespects our constitution, our first and second amendment rights, disregards parents and students rights, like titleIX and basically votes the cultural Marxist line. No gratitude or respect for our nation and our traditions. Any dissent from Salud’s left party line is called racism and hate. This is where we are in California.

They have no facts so they always goto calling their opponents racists, nazis, etc..,

Because you believe the law should be enforced, blindly. While they believe the law is to be ignored for minorities. That’s racism on their part.

Or if you question why the fifth largest economy in the world cannot, refuses to educate minority children. With a ranking of almost dead last in the country first academics. You are a racist asking why the schools cannot educate all children equally given that all children have the same teachers & text books and access to resources.

They make it a race thing showing their true racism.

A missing link fostering the abysmal state of Calif K-12, is very low regard all CSU Teaching Credential campuses earn, according to their peer educational reviews:

https://www.calstate.edu/apply/teaching-credential.

What share of the state educational dollar needs to be spent improving state teacher training programs? Or again, is just throwing more money at something not the answer either. Particularly if the CSU teaching programs are just more failed "woke" hot houses.

Teaching remains a very noble calling and deserves far better regard, considering the money we spend on it every year. Loving the subject one teaches has no price tag. We might be selecting and retaining our teachers on flawed criteria.

Brian—I’ll respectfully push back on your comment about school educating children equally “given that all children have the same teachers and text books and access to resources”.

Education isn’t a one size fits all thing—kids are different, they come in with different experiences and backgrounds, and they may need different things to learn and succeed. I hesitate to share something personal, but I had a hard time passively listening to instruction in school. If I could read the material, I excelled. But I struggled with auditory comprehension. My child is the opposite—he loves to sit and listen and soaks everything in. We would not have succeeded to the same level if teachers and schools treated us exactly the same.

Treating students as individuals and valuing their differences is such an important part of education, in my opinion. Again, not trying to provoke an argument, just offering an opinion and an experience.

I’ve been hoping this forum will be a place for actual substantive discussion since I appreciate discourse (and not the name calling and bs defensiveness that usually occurs in media comments).

Yes individual children are different, they are individuals.

But are you saying academics depends upon race/ethnicity?

The academic records would agree with that argument.

Most children in our local schools are 2nd-3rd generation Americans.

So why are academic score divided upon race?

My family are a teaching family, my father from a lower socioeconomic school in NY I don’t buy the excuses from CA, the fifth largest economy in the world.

Nelson Mandela stated you can tell much about a society by the way they treat their children. CA cannot educate Hispanic children the same as Asians, blacks, European, etc. what does that say about our CA society?

Expand full comment
Aaron Pa's avatar

Thank you for your thoughtful response. No, I’m not saying that academics depend on race/ethnicity.

May I ask a clarifying question—when you say “why are academic score divided upon race”, what are you wondering—why scores for certain demographics are lower or why are scores reported with racial demographics? Or something else?

Excellent retort by Mr. Campbell in exposing the dirty little secret here in SB, which has been going on for years. Yes, the local “media” for lack of better term, is clearly the enforcement arm of the local Democratic Party and machine. That’s right, giving cover to local politicians, liberal agendas and going after those who merely ask the difficult questions. Any tax paying citizen that dares to ask critical questions of the homeless, liberal politicians, green energy, brown or black activism or LGBTQ indoctrination is met by bottom feeders like Jerry Roberts or “Angry Poodle” with a scarlet letter, excoriating them as a, wait for it…RACIST! Usually, that is enough for most people, who also have a local lively hood, to back down and shut up.

When pressed further, local activists will play the Nazi card. Such was the case recently when Roberts made it very clear in equating conservatives as fascists and racists, even going so far as attaching a “B” movie clip showing Nazi’s interrogating those lacking proper travel documents. His assertion being one as to what to expect from conservatives and ICE officials, hassling “brown people.” What a pathetic and vile attempt at journalism. Being a Jew, one would think Roberts would have a more intelligent response in expressing his opposition rather than showing images that triggers painful emotions for many, including myself, whose father was a WWII veteran. Glad Dad is not here to see this disgrace.

But this is not solely about taking issue with a washed up, has-been, angry little man masquerading as a journalist, no it’s more about cutting through the bullshit we have been fed here and the lame ass excuses from a privileged, political, white class that wants to keep things the way they’ve always been. Sure, many of the local uber wealthy liberals want to keep the immigration mess in tact. Keeping those in the shadows, impoverished and uneducated in order to maintain the Hacienda mentality. Now that’s the real news story!

I do take issue with labelling a child as an "illegal." Children go where their parents take them. I also do not see anywhere the suggestion that Salud is not a legal US citizen, nor that he should be removed from office. No one has suggested that. Every elected office is open to naturalized citizens, save one: POTUS. Actually, from what I have gleaned about Salud's background, his sounds like the great American success story. Do you imagine that had his family remained in their homeland, their son would be seated in high office in Mexico City? I suspect that their father supported his family -- living across the border -- by working in the Bracero program. And quite possible, the parents were granted amnesty under President Reagan. That's not something to hide; rather, the reverse, the celebration of our congressman's rise from humble roots. The southern border has historically been porous. That's not the issue. What is the most pressing issue for Americans, the dramatic, out of control, masses of people entering the country with the flaunting of our existing immigration laws by our electeds. No longer are the border crossers Mexican citizens seeking work and a better life, our neighbors to the immediate south with whom we share so much in history and culture. Nor are they the Hmong refugees who waited in refugee camps until they received a sponsor 40 years ago. Today's border crossers are travelling from all over the world, including from hostile nations. A significant number are children sold into the sex slave industry. Others, indentured servants to pay off their crossing fee to the drug cartels. This is the discussion we as a country must have, and somehow come together. THAT is the challenge.

Celeste, my original story “Consequences” portrayed Carbajal’s story as an inspiration to immigrants.

This escalated when Carbajal refuted the claim, saying he had proof but refuses to provide proof. I offered a written apology. He refused.

Instead Radical Left Jerry, who I’ve had run in’s with in the past appeared. In my experience he is not very nice or impartial. And he admitted he has no proof, no evidence exactly what he accuses me of. Typical from the Radicals to point fingers never expecting to be held accountable.

They brought up a very important issue. Where does Salud’s loyalty lie?

Foreigners who cost taxpayers Billions each year or the Americans on the street where those Billions would solve food insecurity and shelter for every homeless American?

I agree he was a child when he came here, but as an adult he decided to use his childhood as a political tool to garner votes and his seat in Congress to potentially favor foreigners over citizens.

He could have quashed this a long time ago, but has failed , refused to do so.

Just to clarify, Brian: Everything I wrote was intended to serve as reinforcement of what you had previously written. It's not that Salud was born in Mexico. It's that he will not acknowledge the facts about he and his family's move into the US -- also something tgat none of us would disparage them for. They sought a better life here. It's the other issue that concerns us all, except the far left. That the massive numbers, millions, of undocumented pose a threat to our country: safety, ability to absorb such numbers, the great expense through medical care, educating, and social programs. Most concerning, the danger an open border presents as an invitation to our enemies. The far left refuses to even discuss.

Thank you for exploring this issue and confronting the personal attacks you got as rebuttal defense, that were so carefully worded to obscure and deflect. The sticky web entangling us all remains "innocent until proven guilty" vs. trust, but verify.

If Salud is required to provide "proof", why are not we all? But they avoided this philosophical challenge, worthy for all of us to explore at this critical time of national identity. Instead they chose to go immediately for the personal attack, control and silence jugular.

When the only rebuttal contains so many evasions, carefully parsed words, personal attacks, slurs and innuendo along with maligning even this publication and its readers, this suddenly creates a very unfair fighting field. For what purpose, Mr Roberts? Why go so scorched earth as your first line of defense?

The nation had grown weary of these very same tactics for the past eight years used against Trump, Trump supporters, and any single thing that now comes from this new, voter-approved Trump administration. Yet, this exact same campaign of partisan attack and slander is alive and well in our "tolerant and progressive" little borough.

Carry on, and thank you for providing this "smell test" at your own personal peril. Anyone of us takes this same risk when we deign to speak up against this well-entrenched local Democrat establishment. The stakes are obviously too high for them to entertain even one small weakness in their campaign for total control.

With the notable exception of our President and Elon Musk, who are not owned or controlled by anybody, our two political parties are essentially a 'Uniparty' making deals behind closed doors. This is how they become multimillionaire while only making $150K per year. They are both in on it. That is why it was so important to get leaders like Musk and President Trump in place. neither party controls them, and that is why secretly both parties hate them. Our democracy is a stage show. CAB has had a friendly social relation with Salud outside of government.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said with his former chief of staff from superviors days, and this could be part of the Congressman's problem.

Use this example, CAB has questioned multiple transportation related issues with little success, because the majority elected have been handed their "marching orders" by the one party State we live in.

Could it be that the Congressman has been isolated to such a degree he does not realize how the average voter is disgusted with open borders and the social issues related to it?

This is evidenced by the multitudes of media coverage and interviews by the press

Biden didn’t appear to the press until March 25.

Either way this is our president and you should give him a chance. It’s only four years.

Brian, I’m sorry, but this man showed his true colors from his first run, hasn’t even tried to change. He cares about nothing and no one but himself. This time around one of the first acts was sell America for $270 million to Elon, who is now destroying it. This man has had chance after chance after chance to do the right thing by America, but he likes the Russian way of life. He wants to be a sovereign country to be ruled by a king or dictator that is his goal. So you magas go ahead and worship him, fawn over him, in the end, he will turn on all of you.

As for trump being a spring chicken, I beg to differ. He always has a constant scowl on his face? He walks like every joint in his body hurts, I shouldn’t even say walks, he lumbers as opposed to walking. Also, what’s up with the way he sits? Whether it’s a couch, a chair or an armchair he’s always sitting on the edge. Kind of like he has hemorrhoid problems. It’s not a good look.

I hear ya, billionaires throwing around their money.

But did you know about the Billionaires violating the law and donating stolen money to Democrats.

- Zuckerberg and Chan donated approximately $400 million

- Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF),FTX stole people’s money and donated $50 million of stolen money to Democrats

- October 2022, a Washington state judge fined Meta nearly $25 million for repeatedly and intentionally violating the state’s campaign finance disclosure law.

- January 2025, Meta agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump.

Then there are the “honest” billionaires donating

- Bloomberg $20m to Biden

- Other billionaires to Biden hedge fund manager James Simons, philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.

- Bloomberg and Bill Gates, each reportedly contributing $50 million to the Democratic Future Forward PAC

- Soros family collectively contributed over $60 million to support Democratic candidates

Brian, what party has not received stolen money at one time or another whether they knew it or not? My biggest issue is that some of these people that are so blessed with all this great wealth do nothing for their fellow man for their neighbor, for people in need in one way or another. Then there’s the ones that actually care about peoples well-being, and do something about it

Brian , It is not wrong or racist to ask these questions and expect a response. The silence speaks volumes. Accountability is what the next 4 years is shooting for.

Thanks for your insights

“Be quiet and do as you’re told.” This is the mantra of the current administration. 250 years of protecting the voice of opposition by the First Amendment is slowly being eradicated, first in the Halls of Power, then in the Media and online. If you speak out against the "Fearless Leader" who would be king you could be threatened with a lawsuit and censure. Ultimately, those who refuse to accept Trump's nefarious lies may find themselves in "re-education camps" or Gitmo. The Klan used to burn a cross, but now MAGA burns the letter "T". Likewise only places of worship that display a large letter "T" will be allowed to receive First Amendment religious protection. Let us pray that coastal California remains a bastion and beachhead of democracy against the dark, evil force now arraying against us.

I feel ya, I asked questions about Salud and I’m being attacked.

I asked about our SBUSD and they calked me a racist.

Zuckerberg admitted the Biden administration forced them to censor posts and the Twitter files revealed the censorship. Violations of the First Amendment.

Biden, Harris, Obama, etc openly attacking the second amendment.

Presidents swear an oath to protect the Constitution, yet they attacked it.

You are right, they should goto jail for treason.

Democrat attacks destroy valued, long established impeccable reputations. reputations I hope many read and share three sentences from your article which I know from experience are true: “the Radical Left launches attacks, slanders us, and, in extreme cases—such as City Council member Alejandra Gutierrez, who lost favor with Democratic leaders—even threatens lives.

“Here in Santa Barbara, if you ask a question that public officials don’t want to answer, the local media steps in to bully and discredit you. The Radical Left is thriving here, and their tactics are clear: silence opposition through intimidation.”

The slander and intimidation process is organized by the Democrat Central Committee for execution by their elected and appointed officials, and only their version will be widely publicized by Newsmakers, the Independent, Noozhawk, KEYT, and the SBCC Channels (controlled by the three print news sources.) After many thousands of dollars spent on legal research, discovery, and service of legal facts, THERE WILL BE NO RETRACTION BY LOCAL MEDIA. Our local reality— There are no unbiased journalists in Santa Barbara.
