All rational questions. The candidate should be willing to answer after all as a vote on the council is he or is he not a "spend thrift" willing to put more burden on the taxpayer.
Look at the history of failure of past councils, regarding Down Town Santa Barbara. The MIG street narrowing was and is a cancer that destroyed the heart of the largest economic engine in south county. Destruction of street capacity that draws visitors from 101 to downtown is not rational.
As Donovan states "Santa Barbara taxpayers have already seen the consequences when spending pressures outpace recurring revenues and reserves are depleted."
When you propose the same failure of narrowing and shutting down streets in the core of Old Town what does that say about understanding of history and failure?
The comment in this article "Santa Barbara cannot spend the same dollar twice. " Is telling.
Is the declining enrollment at the SBUSD a bell weather of long term issues in Santa Barbara? Who will pay the bill when more failure of a shutdown city center spreads?
Thank you Bonnie for your objective, investigative journalism. This, as opposed to other activists pretending to be journalists who try to hide the facts and failures of the current leftist debauchery. Yes, I am referring to you “Newsfakers” and “Angry Poodle.”
It is not surprising that Escobedo is playing hide and seek when it comes to his checkered, deadbeat past. And why not? He failed miserably our children, and now he wants to do the same for the City of Santa Barbara.
Electing Escobedo to the City Council, given his bankruptcy, makes about as much sense as hiring an alcoholic to manage your Liquor Store.
There seems to be a disturbing trend in our local politics when it comes to electing former school board members. Laura Capps, Das Williams, Wendy Sims-Moten, Janet Wolf, Jack O’Connell, Liz Reyes-Martin, Ricardo Valencia, Alice Patino and the Queen Bee and “La jefa” herself, Monique Limon, all former school board members that used their positions as a stepping stone to higher office.
Ask yourself, how are our schools doing? That’s right, our schools are a dismal failure and we expect these people to improve our standards of living?
How could this individual, who has allowed his personal debts to exceed his assets by 7.33 times, be trusted within an inch of making decisions on public money? His has exhibited very, poor judgement in the management of his own affairs, how can voters trust his judgement in managing theirs? If they do, they must be daft!
Thank you for writing. Over the years in California the conservative voter base has slowly disappeared. The Independent and Democrat base has increased as discouragement sets in for common sense folks and the power has shifted towards progressive government rule. The change is very noticeable when candidates and elected officials ignore the age old tradition of the classic debate; refusing to answer reasonable question about the job, etc. has become common place. Power corrupts!
Ms. Donovan, you write: "With depleted reserves, rising costs and major projects under consideration, taxpayers have good reason to examine the financial decisions and proposals of those seeking public office."
Fair enough, but why then do you cast spurious aspersions on the Democratic party with your coy little cartoon of a donkey robbing some public trust safe all while ignoring Donald Trump's six bankruptcy filings. Isn't that just a wee bit hypocritical?
Political cartoons are an integral and important part of political culture throughout the world. See Herblock, Garry Trudeau, Ramirez. Everyone has their ox gored one time or another. Relax (the caveat being Islam...re: Charlie Hebdo in France)
FYI...the Democrats COMPLETELY dominate the education industry in CA from K thru the universities...as well as Sacramento. The good, the bad and the ugly. They own it.
thank you and others for your being diligent in reporting these "issues".
What will it cost?
Where will the funds come from?
And, what else must wait?

If Gabe is unable to manage his own personal finances, why would we vote for him to look after OURS?
