Wow, great article and eye opening.... I lived in Mississippi for 4 1/2 years when Raytheon transferred me there. It definitely has it's issues but education is not one of them now. California should open up its eyes and ears but the people seem to be so far in the weeds they can't see the forest for the trees. It is so sad. The people that lose are the students.... and ultimately all of us because they will be the people in charge one of these days. So sad....
The SBUSD "PROVED" what works under Sup. Caston and Sup. Flores.
The was decades ago. When these two move to different districts they put in place the same process. Guess what it worked in all instances.
The State of Calif. and the SBUSD have been put under intensive "We want our kids taught in our language." It fails. What also fails is dual language instruction. Except for the most talented it is confusing.
What worked? Simple all students are taught solely in English. If they need help it is given. Test Scores skyrocket. The supposed underachievers become a small minority.
We have a "RIGHT" to have our kids learn in our language and culture. OK want failure keep the losers chant. Watch your kids fail.
This is not an issue of what works. It is an issue of POLITICS and how many votes can we get for the Left and Democrat Party. I know what works. I watched a private non-profit that has helped supposed under achievers make them winners. Never charged a dime.
Now let's see the but, but, but excuses.
Nice comparison of dollars spent and outcome. Nice comparison of a State that is supposedly backward, and kicking Calif. hind end.
"Why do so many California educators refuse to follow what works?"
That's easy, the California Teachers Union and the needs of the Democrat supermajority here outweigh the needs of common sense fundamental educational principles that we all know work and have worked for over 200 years.
Mississippi was able to put their children's education first because their teachers union and ruling political parties were weak and could be shaken off like fleas in deference to the needs of the children like discipline, reading proficiency and mathematics.
In California, like in the former Soviet Union, the needs of the ruling political party come 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Our kids? Their needs are a distant 20th or 30th on list of priorities here...if they are even considered at all.
