I’m wondering if this is constitutional. I’m a Carpinteria landlord and if I were in SB would consult an attorney. As it is now owners who hold property for retirement security will have to sell and invest proceeds instead of holding property investments. My property, no doubt, would be purchased and torn down to build a large home since we’re 1 block from beach and salt marsh. We get offers regularly from out of towners.

Loy. Of course your words are true. The problem is that with this Communist Council, you can show up or write letters until the cows come home, but their commanders at the DCC have charted this path, and the dodo birds of council will follow their activist orders. I don’t want to dissuade people from writing letters because we must document this attack on our rights so that we can sue the City, which is the only solution. We just shouldn’t expect to change their minds because the decisions have already been made.
Very compelling arguments against rent control, with the larger issue being the Socialist takeover of our local government. Clearly, the strategy is to make it as difficult as possible for the mom and pop landlord, favoring instead the large corporate takeover of the rental market. Why is this? Perhaps large, faceless corporations are more likely to bend to social, regulatory and political pressure?
The latest? Vacancy tax in order to punish those who do not fill their properties to the brim with well deserving tenants.
Is class envy and Boomer resentment partially driving this? All one has to do is listen to the word salads offered up by CC members Santamaria and Gutierrez to understand how ill equipped they are to lead SB.
Renaming ominous sounding "control" as "stabilization" and then conflating it with standard responsibilities of "oversight" seems to be the key to success for all such evil.
It's Orwellian, of course, but Orwell is nowadays considered right wing propaganda and not taught.
They will pass their rent control and it will destroy the middle class like it always does everytime it's tried.
For anyone over 40, It's like watching "Titanic" over and over again each time hoping for a different outcome. 😢
Those proposing this property owner control legislation don't give a crap about the poor renters...This is an end-around Prop-13.
Your property brings in less money to their insatiable coffers unless you sell it.
Pretty cut and dry. They will continue to tighten the screws until you are forced to sell for self preservation.
Our city council are saps and probably believe they are doing something good for the people. They are so stupid and incompetent they don't understand or even know who they are working for. (Hint: it's not you)
I kind of prefer the straightforward approach in the old westerns where a bunch of black hats just rode into town and threatened everyone with guns to force them off their land. At least then we had a chance.
One wonders if the negative consequences of this plan are unintended. Or not. In battle, sometimes inflicting non-lethal damage is more effective than immediate mortality. That's how I see the socialist conversion of our flawed-but-superior capitalist system. The young idealist (oppressed renters?) on planning staff that drafted this "pipe-bomb" ordinance are misled by their university indoctrication which mounts all human interaction in the frame of Oppressor vs. The Oppressed. It is the epitome of intellectual laziness: One frame--one perspective-- fits all, explains all, and protects some. Its now just a "zero some" game.
Bring together Republicans, independents, moderate Democrats, business leaders, neighborhood groups, and anyone who cares more about results than party labels.
Recall councilmembers - Santamaria and Gutierrez, recruit one strong candidate in every open district this November, and stop splitting votes because of egos.
If Santa Barbara’s adults can’t unite around competent local government, then we shouldn’t be surprised when we keep getting the same results.
thank you randy, eric and mike for your wise decision regarding this potential rent control ordinance.
shame on you wendy, kristen, meagan and oscar. how uninformed, selfish, and ignorant your decisions are. i beg you to do some research and look at our city and our housing situation past, present and future.
i was a renter for many years - now, thank the gods, i paid off my house after 40 years of scrimping, refinancing and saving and being a responsible property owner to my home and my neighborhood. i am stunned at how much everything costs to keep up a home. there is always something that needs attending to. my next door neighbors are renters. their landlord says she has no extra money and the house has fallen into, not only disrepair, but is dangerously overgrown and uncared for and is an embarrassment to our neighborhood. this will be more and more common if you pass this bill.
please, do some more research and gather more experience in living in the real world, fiscally, practically and morally.
i thank you all for your service, but please choose wisely - not only this rent control ordinance, but so many other decisions you're making that, if you've traveled around the world and have seen other cities, seem immensely short sighted. our future here in santa barbara is in your hands.

It could happen in Carpinteria next. Make sure you vote for whoever runs against Monica Solorzano in your district this November.

Next? the vacancy tax on rentals that are kept empty. Silly.
