Four Years of Wasted Time
If you are wondering what inspired the title “1,354 days,” my inspiration was Kamala Harris’s book, “107 Days.”
How so?
On January 21, 2021, Kamala Harris and Joe Biden were sworn in as Vice President and President, respectively, of the United States, and occupied those offices until January 20, 2025.
Kamala Harris, in her book “107 Days,” wrote about the 107 days of her vice presidency when she was also the Democratic presidential candidate in 2024.
107 days
According to the publicity and her interviews about her book, which in fairness I have not read, she apparently discusses the failures of others, such as the difficulties President Biden caused by not dropping out of the race sooner. Other failures include her campaign staff not properly preparing her for interviews and, in her opinion, the public not being ready for her – a black woman married to a Jewish man – selecting a gay man, Pete Buttigieg, as her Vice President.
What about the rest of time that she was Vice President?
Ms. Harris occupied the office of Vice President for four years. Four years times 365 days/year is 1,460 days; add one day for Leap Year and she held the office of Vice President for 1,461 days.
Ms. Harris had the luxury of using 320 pages to discuss her 107 days as the Democrat Party Presidential candidate.
With apologies to the former radio commentator Paul Harvey whose tag line was, “And now for the rest of the story,” this presentation will focus on her achievements during the “other” days of her vice presidency, or 1,461 total days minus the 107 days, or 1,354 days.
The U.S. Border
In March 2021, President Biden tasked Vice President Harris with various issues involving the immigration of unvetted migrants, which led to one of her nick names being the “Border Czar.”
Ms. Harris declined to visit the U.S. border but interpreted her role as one of dealing with the “root causes” of the migration from Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. In April 2021, the Biden -Harris team gave $310 million to those countries.
Her programs included:
“Climate Adaptation,” whatever that is;
“Expanding education and workforce development and financial inclusion”;
“Combating corruption, smuggling, and human trafficking”;
“Sending troops to the border” to help more migrants enter quickly;
Regional cooperation” with, for example, the Los Angeles Declaration of Migration and Protection, to protect – not limit – migrants.
The only indication of the success, or failure, of that $310 million is that the number of migrants from those countries continued to increase so that by mid 2023 an estimated 5.5 million illegal immigrants were in the U.S. from Mexico, 1.4 million from Guatemala, 1.1 million from Honduras and 1.09 million from El Salvador. These numbers do not reflect the “real” total, since 2024 is not included.
Her alleging that she supported the expedited removal of those who crossed the border illegally was meaningless because they could simply walk back in.
Inflation
Kamala Harris, as Vice President, cast the tie-breaking votes in the U.S. Senate. After 50 Republicans senators voted “No,” and 50 Democrat senators voted “Yes,” Ms. Harris’s vote of “Yes” enabled that administration to thrust on the American people “The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021” and “The Inflation Reduction Act.”
The euphemistically titled “Inflation Reduction Act” notably did not reduce inflation: it contributed to its escalating.
For example, inflation in the last three years of the Trump presidency declined from 2.44% in 2018 to 1.81% in 2019 and to 1.23% in 2020.
In 2021, the first year of the Biden-Harris term, inflation increased by more than 500% from the last year of the Trump presidency to 7%, compounded by a 6.5% increase in 2022, by 3.4% in 2023 and 2.9% in 2024.
To use an Obama expression, the economy Trump “inherited” in 2025 included American wage earners having lost considerable buying power during the four years between his two terms as president.
Supreme Court Confirmation Hearing
Ms. Harris presided over the Senate confirmation of multiple judges, including the one selected by President Biden to be the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, despite Jackson’s testifying during her confirmation hearing that she was “not a biologist,” therefore could not define a woman.
Gun Control
Ms. Harris oversaw the White House Office Gun Violence Prevention to implement the Safer Communities Act.
Do you feel any safer?
International Alliances
During her book tour, Ms. Harris has discussed her “negotiating” numerous treaties. However, the vice president has no constitutional authority to negotiate or sign treaties on behalf of the United States.
That power belongs solely to the president, with the advice and consent of the Senate.
The U.S. Constitution makes this distinction clear. Article II, Section 2 states that only the president “shall have power, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties.”
The vice president plays no formal role in the treaty process—not in negotiation, not in signing, and not in ratification.
Her claim that she personally signed treaties with “hundreds” of leaders would mean she either fundamentally misundersood her position or is deliberately misleading the public
Nowhere in any official record or news archive is there evidence of her signing treaties.
The Future
The best advice for all of us, including Ms. Harris, was eloquently expressed by Brad Paisley in his holiday tweet of 2013: “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365-page book. Write a good one.”
