When is enough, enough? NEVER or NOW?!? The County’s planned downtown latest greatest ‘property tax exempt housing’ are modular units starting at 319sf for an average cost of $452,000 per unit. Again no outcry from property tax paying residents who must subsidize the cost of schools, police, fire, parks, and municipal services for resident renters in tax-exempt housing.
The City estimates 1 of 7 residents live here contributing nothing towards the cost of these shared services. Does Santa Barbara have tens of thousands of highly paid government beneficiaries, trust fund babies, transplanted retirees from other county’s transferring in a low tax base, or just an abundance of cash rich homeowners?
We need a breakdown on paid property tax & bond payments: under $5K, over $5K, and then a breakdown of property tax bills by cohort $10K, 20K, 30K up to over $100K.
Is everyone else but me happy subsidizing the ever increasing number of tax-exempt housing units? After 46 years here, the cry for more is endless.
The City and County are broke plus have spent our reserves for emergencies and unanticipated costs.
“City of Compassion?” More like a DSA dumpster fire! Some 60,000 rentals in NYC are now known as “Zombie Apartments” because they are rent stabilized and the landlords are unable to pay the high cost of bringing the units to code. Whereas apartments in the Big Apple, if you can find one, are upwards of $5400/month for a one bedroom. At what point does common sense prevail and folks decide the costs are too high and opt to live elsewhere?
Similarly to Manhattan, not everyone is destined to live in SB! What is so hard to understand about this concept? State and local governments have done a lousy job at promoting mass public transportation and building infrastructure elsewhere, whereby land costs are cheaper.
Who is responsible for the housing crisis? Think of our current political climate as if the DSA is the contagion and establishment Democrats are the host.
At some point, the contagion overtakes the host and the host dies.
To this fun but sad read. History indicates that the California finger pointers in public office usually have two more questions: (1) who can we hire to conduct an environmental study, perhaps focusing on climate change making the world too hot or too cold in a hundred, or so, years, and (2) where is a friendly judge that will give us an injunction requiring the federal government to send us more money?

The developer neglected one point: The mayor had stated several times in days previous that the city would have the option of obtaining a property deemed unsuitable by its metrics. Think about the implications of that!

I hope these people see the truth about who they’re voting for, who they’ve been voting for before it’s too late. Unfortunately, it might already be too late to save many of the things we’ve grown to love about our town.
