Which Party is a Greater Threat to Democracy?
The Harris/Walz campaign and the Democratic Party have argued that former president Donald J. Trump is an “existential threat” to our system of government and must be defeated to preserve our democracy. It seems to be their overriding rationale for why he must be defeated.
However, I would argue the Democratic Party and their far-left adherents are a much greater threat to our freedoms than Trump would ever be. Yes, he challenged the results of the 2020 election and I believed crossed the line to protest what he perceives as a stolen election. Insisting that his Vice President, Mike Pence, reject the electoral votes on Jan 6, 2020, was a step too far for many of us. Although let’s not pretend Democrats have clean hands after they attempted to do the same thing in 2004 and 2016 when they lost presidential elections.
On Jan 6, 2017, several members of Congress objected over eleven times to counting Trump electoral votes from several states, trying to get them thrown out.
In 2016, after Trump won the election, many Democrats refused to accept this result and proceeded to challenge the legitimacy of his victory, claiming Russia stole the election on behalf of a colluding Trump. Never mind that they had no evidence whatsoever of such collusion. To this day, many refuse to accept the results of an exhaustive investigation conducted by a special prosecutor. Even though the prosecutor’s office was staffed with partisan Democrats, no provable evidence of collusion was ever found.
Democrats’ Goal is to Never Lose Again
Trump’s supposed efforts to “circumvent democracy” pales in comparison to Democrats, who seem to want to ensure that all future elections are rigged in their favor so they will never lose again.
How do they plan to do this? First, by packing the Supreme Court, so they can co-opt the judiciary to ensure the third branch of government can’t thwart their objectives. Second, by granting Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico statehood, which would virtually guarantee their control of the Senate. They regularly attempt to alter election laws to favor their candidates, and they will suppress dissent by using the excuse that all criticism of them is misinformation.
Why am I fairly confident this is what will happen in the future if they manage to win this election? Because they have repeatedly said they are going to do this. As a history buff, I have observed that almost all democratic countries that lose their freedoms are when socialists or leftwing authoritarians arrogate power. We see this in Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Ecuador and now Brazil and Mexico in our hemisphere. Once socialists win an election, they next attempt to stamp out all opposition so they never lose another election.
Election “Reforms” Lead to One-Party State
Brazil, run by a socialist convict, just outlawed X, formerly Twitter, because Elon Musk refused to silence opposition to Brazil’s socialists on his platform. Mexico – also run by a socialist – has proposed several so-called reforms which will end the independence of the judiciary and give them new powers to nationalize private enterprises. Maybe the greatest most recent abuse of power is socialist Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela who most observers believe lost an election in a landslide, brazenly overturning the result by doctoring the vote count and receiving approval by his self-selected Supreme Court.
The UK’s new Prime Minister, Liberal Keir Starmer, has cracked down on protestors who were demonstrating against the alarming increase in violent crimes committed by a huge influx of immigrants to the country over the last ten years.
Legitimate dissent is now considered hate speech and is being criminally prosecuted by the government.
We don’t need to look overseas, right here in North America, our neighbor, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, froze personal and corporate bank accounts of COVID demonstrators for opposing mandates and lockdowns during the pandemic. If you thought this was a rightwing government responsible for brutally suppressing the free speech of dissenters, you would be wrong. Instead, it was the most liberal prime minister that Canada has had in the last 50 years.
Democracy Disappears When Socialists Take Over
Perhaps the greatest demonstration of Democrats’ anti-democratic impulses is what they have done to attempt to defeat Donald Trump. Instead of trusting the voters, they have tried to block Trump from the ballot in various states. They have also tried to keep third-party candidates, such as Robert Kennedy, Jr., off the ballot. Democrats have abused our own criminal justice system to indict Trump for bogus crimes, as evidenced by politicized indictments prosecuted by a highly partisan Democratic state attorney general in NY and an equally overzealous, ethically compromised district attorney in Georgia, who both campaigned they would go after Trump.
In countries where democracy has become enervated, the media is usually co-opted by the government. In our country, the media has voluntarily surrendered its objectivity and has happily become a propaganda machine for Democrats. It is particularly disturbing the mainstream media has abrogated its responsibility – without any pretense – to hold both parties accountable.
Having said all the above, the most disturbing trend by the Democrat Party is its attempt to censor opposing views, whether the policy is climate change, COVID, or transgenderism. Recently Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta (Facebook), admitted that the Biden Administration successfully pressured his company to censor posts on its social media platform.
One such case was removing any reference to the NY Post article about the Hunter Biden laptop story. This, even though Biden knew that the damaging claims of corruption regarding his family on the computer hard drive was real. He and his staff even managed to round up more than 50 former intelligence officials to suggest it was Russian disinformation.
It's obvious to me that socialists or leftwing politicians that want to intrusively interject government into our lives will increasingly become more authoritarian to achieve their goals. It has happened repeatedly throughout history in other countries that have embraced socialism.
Trump may be many things – perhaps even a scourge to the embedded power centers in Washington, D.C. – but the threat he presents doesn’t hold a candle to the Democrats’ ruthless and Machiavellian attempt to seize and hold on to power.

Thanks, Lou, terrific column. I do see Trump differently than you do. And I wish that people, like you, wouldn't spend so much time granting Trump haters their problems with him. Because meanwhile, the Democrats become enraged at anyone who mentions any of Kamala's numerous flaws and incompetencies and call them racist, misogynist, anti-democracy.
You're saying, gee he's not great, but we have to vote him in because otherwise … socialism. This is like a milquetoast flip on the Democrats saying Trump must be stopped to save democracy.
This is why I'm not going to attend the Mesa Cafe Debate watch. The last thing I need right now is to be around people second guessing every one of Trump's moves. Oh, if only he'd be more polite. If only his hair didn't look so bad tonight. If only he were more Reagan-like. Then there'll be that person checking every poll and getting so nervous they need to run out for more CBD.
I think Trump's great, just the way he is. Because that's the only kind of person who would get up from an assassination attempt and keep fighting. The only kind of person who would spend his Golden Years in and out of court, threatened with imprisonment, just to save America. I don't want him any different because he wouldn't be there for America if he were.
Let’s stop calling them Democrats, and call them what they seem to be; Marxist/Communist.
