Although a critic, I will vote for Trump for President
As many of you know from my comments to many of the articles that have appeared in Santa Barbara Current, I am no fan of Donald Trump. I think he is his own worst enemy, putting his foot in his mouth far too often.
Although I liked many of his policies during his presidency, he is a badly flawed human being who would have a hard time getting elected against pretty much any Democrat, except for a senile guy who pretends to be president. It’s why I supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the primaries. Besides being the best governor in the country, I thought DeSantis could demonstrate to voters the clear divide between conservative policies that have worked in Florida and the failed polices of the Biden/Harris Administration.
Because of predictable mistakes made by Trump and his campaign team, Kamala Harris has taken the lead in this race, and unless Trump gets his campaign back on track, he will lose.
I know there are a lot of people like me that could never vote for the ultra-liberal Harris but hesitate to pull the lever for Trump because of his inflammatory rhetoric and caustic personality. However, I recognize the inherent dangers of a Harris Administration, particularly if the Democrats win Congress, so I am doing the only sensible thing, which is voting for Trump.
I urge all independent voters and others still equivocating to vote for Trump, if only to save the country from Harris and her VP kindred spirit.
Others who think as I do might wonder why I see Harris as such a mortal threat to this country. The answer is in her own words and her record as Senator and Attorney General in California. She has supported decriminalizing illegal immigration, giving taxpayer funded health insurance to illegal immigrants, eliminating health insurance on the job for 170 million Americans, banning gas cars, confiscating firearms, imposing price controls on food and other consumer goods, ultimately leading to widespread shortages, voting for significant military cuts while in the Senate, allowing at least 10 million illegal immigrants to cross the border while acting as border czar, opposing a federal law meant to stop sanctuary jurisdictions, banning fracking nationwide, defunding the police, and supporting the disastrous Prop 47, which in all likelihood will be repealed by voters in November.
All of this doesn’t even begin to mention the disastrous record of the current administration, giving us the worst inflation in 45 years, chaos in Ukraine, chaos in the Middle East, and a calamitous withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Furthermore, if anything happened to Harris and we ended up with Tim Walz as president, don’t expect anything different than what we would have had under Harris. In fact, it would probably be worse. The first major decision Harris made as the presumptive nominee was to select the most liberal governor in the U.S. as her running mate.
Walz is the guy who imposed the harshest COVID lockdowns in the country and set up a snitch line so people could report their neighbors to the authorities for things as trivial as having small backyard parties. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live in a country where I must fear my neighbors or others for disobeying irrational government rules.
If that wasn’t enough, he delayed calling up the Minnesota National Guard during the 2020 riots for two days while Minneapolis burned, and more than 1,500 retail stores and businesses were destroyed. The rioters even burned down a police station while the governor was asleep at the wheel. Truth be told, he didn’t act sooner because he sympathized with the rioters and didn’t want to look like he was on the side of the police. One way to gauge Walz’s record as governor is to look at net migration for the state. Are people moving to or leaving Minnesota? The answer is they are leaving. Minnesota is in the top ten states that residents are fleeing from.
Finally, we all remember Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden pledging to unify the country and promising to be a president for all Americans. Harris in her nomination speech also used the same appeal to attempt to win over moderates and other of her critics. As I listened to her, I kept hearing the old saying in my head, “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me; fool me three times, shame on both of us.”
This is not a tough decision. I believe it is imperative to defeat Kamala Harris and I urge all other current fence straddlers to vote on the issues, not on the buzz or an absurd theme of “joy.” Democrats want you to believe the last three and a half years didn’t happen, but we all know that it did, and it can get much worse if we elect the most liberal candidate in the history of the country to the highest office in the land.

Hi Lou - thanks for the terrific column, although as usual I disagree with you about Trump.
A few things: why do you believe the B. S. about Kamala doing so well? This is all being fabricated by the Democrat Media Industrial Complex. If you talk to anyone outside of a blue region like this one, you'll hear how overwhelmingly more popular Trump is. I have a friend who just drove over seven thousand miles across the country and he said he saw almost no Harris signs but thousands upon thousands of Trump ones.
If Kamala was really doing so well, then why wouldn't they have her do debates right away? Why wouldn't she be talking to reporters?
I think it's far more likely that they're willing to pay gazillions for the lies about her popularity because they want to cheat on the election and this is the only way they can possibly get away with it.
Here's the timeline I see: I think they'll try to get out of the Trump/Harris debate coming up because they remember what Tulsi did to her and they know Kamala will really tank against Trump. But if she goes through with the debate and does indeed suck, then they'll try to throw Trump in jail because they can't try to assassinate him again.
At the same time, they're working harder and harder to get Joe out. Because then Kamala will be president, and they can declare a state of military emergency - Putin, whatever excuse - and cancel the election. All they really want is to finish their coup. You talk about people getting out to vote to save the country. Lou, I think the Dems have taken us past that.
Thank you, Lou.
Having debated you this very issue in the past, I know how hard this decision must have been for you. To write it down and publish it here shows great courage and character. I am impressed.
